Okay, I MUST admit, I was quite nervous, buying this. I had heard the first single once, and was all... 'Well bam is an ass, and I dunno...' well, it blew me f**kin away.
While there are some variation problems (tracks seem to blend too much between 7-9) on the whole this is a rather SUPERB album.
The light riffs accompany and counter the slight... ping, if anything, of the synth, and the industrialized drum just provides a rang form a slight whirr, to a thrash of 'love metal' onslaught.
Ville's opaque lyrics, coupled with the usual gloom and doom Goth-dance melody, create an enchanting album, where you can easily see, as the album's title suggests, a devilish darkness, yet godly light.
The album starts off strong, with four hart pounding tracks, each varying in its key components. Vocals, and keys. These alone set the mood for the album, away of uplifting joyous love, or a kind of depressing demeanor, a kind of deathly obsession of lust.
Quite often, both can be found within one song, such as track two, the soon to be hit single, 'rip off the wings of a butterfly' which has an immediately catchy hook, and an even catchier chorus, where Valo sings in his falsetto tone, 'let me love... rip off the wings of a butterfly, follow your should, my love...'
The title track is an innocent love song, a perfect interlude, to where, track six opens, very reminiscent of a snowcapped mountain to me (don't ask why)
For me, tracks 7-9 seem like one yet the different tracks can't really be distinguished. Throughout my listening, I wouldn't notice changes of these songs, as easily as the others.
Track ten, the retail versions finale, is a soft sweet ballad, which really just leaves you wondering, taking of crucifixion, and many other haunting facades.
In my opinion, it’s a brilliant album, which only makes me want to pick up more of their work, at least to hold me off till AFI's new masterpiece.
(NOTE: track eleven, The Cage, is only available on an internet bonus edition of this album. it can be said as possibly the farthest form Dark Light, yet one of the most brilliant. I strongly recommend buying it.)
