Review Summary: Change is not a very good idea… especially when you are pretty damn good before it.

Pain of Salvation has done it again: they have challenged the limits of progressive music by experimenting with time and style. Once again, they have walked the “change of attitude” road that many other bands have walked. It seems as if they have travelled back in time, picked up some good old fashioned rock & roll and recorded an album full of references to the old days. Before release, Daniel Gildenlöw gave us a pretty accurate description of what the album was aiming to be: 1976 on steroids.

Although the intention is good and noble, the results aren’t what one would expect of Gildenlöw. He has numerously amazed us with impressive concept albums that are at the time, on the top charts of the prog lists. It is true that progressive music is prone to virtuosity, complexness and change. But change just for change sake? Why move suddenly to a weird (in a good way) version of Rock & Roll when one is doing so fine on the progressive line? So now the obvious question must be asked: Is Gildenlöw changing just for the heck of it, or is it all part of a greater good?

But don’t misinterpret what has already been written: the album is solid. It’s got some nifty sections that would make you wish you were born in 1976. The sound is as raw as a red steak and the vocals will blow your mind. Gildenlöw keeps travelling trough genres and mutating his style in a way that most artists can’t and wish they could. All in all, it’s a record worth listening to if you want to find out what does 1976 on steroids sounds like.

Recommended tracks:
-No way
-She likes to hide
-Tell me you don’t know
-Sleeping under the stars
-Linoleum
-Curiosity

Do you have a stream? otherwise you need to save this as it's not out yet. The mods will have to delete it

It has been relased in Sweden already. The complete list of release dates is on their official web page. For some reason, US release date is at the bottom of the list.

Your review doesn't make sense.

First you say that change isn't good for this band then you say that the change was good and then you say that the album is solid, yet you don't explain why you think the change wasn't good or why you think the songs are solid aside from saying 'nifty sections'. You also didn't really back up why you gave the album a 3 aside from saying that it wasn't what you expected from the band.

The review almost feels like a sad attempt at trolling. Did you even listen to the album?

How about "Road Salt", "Where It Hurts" or "Sisters"? These ones are really unique, very lyrical and worth mentioning, they bring a lot in the album's ambience. They are also some kind of reference to the clasic PoS's albums such as "Remedy Line" and "Perfect Element Part One".

Im sorry, but I can't agree with the rating you gave.

You got tunnel vision when it comes to music. What did you expect? Another same album?

Artists change, evolve, experiment. Maybe you shouldn't write the review on this album.

horrendous review. These guys are awesome, I know Remedy Lane and I need to listen to these guys more after my post-rock/jazz obsession clears.

Album was good. The 70s style worked very well sometimes and other times it was a bit dull.

Really enjoyed 'Sisters', 'Sleeping Under the Stars' and 'Where it Hurts'.

A big improvement on Scarsick IMO.

as much as i would like to agree with it being a great album, i just cant say that it is better than any of their other albums, even scarsick (well tbh i like that one a lot, despite the fact that everyone says its their worst). I have not listened to it yet in great depth, but im sure i might come round to liking it after a while. Unfortunately my opinion is that its just not got enough of their PoS craziness to it. I mean Sleeping under the stars, for example gets kinda crazy and the timing gets really messed up and complicated at some point, but it just doesnt feel enough like them.

I guess it just takes time to get used to.

Terrible review btw. Really seems rushed and looks like there was very little effort put into it..

Poorly formatted review, and the summary sums up everything I hate about the average prog fan.

Album didn't suck as much as I thought it would, it's actually pretty good. The sound is just so outdated though.

First of All, i just want to say this review was poor! Your spelling and grammar are both horrendous, and frankly, no one's going to take what you have to say seriously if you don't SPELL CHECK!

Secondly, This album was actually quite good. Different, and a little weird at times, but "Tell Me You Don't Know", "No Way" and "Road Salt" should all go down in the classic canon of PoS songs.

At first I didn't like this album at all.But as every PoS album,it need its time.

Road salt has it's moments, although it can't be compared with previous albums of the band.

Still is a sweet and enjoyable album
