Review Summary: Delorean's latest full-length album, Subiza, is undoubtedly a cheery look into the minds of a new and creative force, but intimidating it is not. As many people will inform you, one of the questions to ask yourself before approaching Subiza is how much you like Animal Collective. Nay-sayers should probably resume their less world-conscious dives into indie, but others will most likely find solace in Delorean's mission statement: fulfill the needs of "bitchforks" everywhere. Combining noise elements, dance sensibilities, and wrapping it into one eclectic drugged-up package may ring a couple of bells (rather large ones at that), but regardless, Delorean are adept musicians, and even better songwriters. They come with dazzling ideas, and an understanding of indie-pop's limits. Yet Delorean are respectfully breaking them.
Still, Delorean are by no means contrived. Subiza is a natural look at fusion, wrapping up their diverse influences in a effortless pop package, which helps them avoid their contemporaries' pretensions. However, Delorean are just as original, if not more so. One second, they're toying with tropical influence, yet playing like an alternative-pop band; or maybe they're combining late-‘90s Spanish Balearic house music in a pop package. Sure, a dance-rock band such as Delorean trying to evoke images of Spain's beaches is ambitious. Yet, Subiza accomplishes the ineffable in a spectacular manner.
Whether the band is utilizing their slightly pinched-sounding vocalist, their almost disco-like flair, or their knack at producing tropical-infused pop, Delorean's sound is an interesting affair to say the least. And the more innovative aspects of Delorean's sound are so well-combined that they never shadow the band's pop-aspirations (unlike The Killers). When touching upon less popular musical components, Delorean keep in mind accessibility, as to avoid becoming unapproachable. It's a comforting tactic they're using, and it's one of their strong points considering the band isn't all too pop-centric. "Stay Close" may verge on tropical monotony, but that's a part of its appeal. The band never delves too far into experimental, pop, or world fields without incorporating some strange concept from another genre. From dream pop they bring ethereal melodies, from electronic music comes the boisterous, hallucinogenic feel, and of course, there are international concepts abound. Cold undertones from German-based electronic movements are heavily utilized, as are the elements of Italian house. But when it comes down to it, Delorean are more concerned with being a pop band. They accent their airy hooks and melodious sects more than their kooky influences, and they're all the better for it. The band's latest full-length album, Subiza, is undoubtedly a cheery look into the minds of a new and creative force, but intimidating it is not.

Critique the living shit out of this, as I feel bad for not posting this on rrr.
| | | This is a great review. You've gotten better at using more reader-friendly vocabulary that many felt you needed to use in your past work. There are a few little things that sound odd like, "Delorean avoid the obnoxious pretense which follows their contemporaries . . . However, Delorean are just as original." I guess their contemporaries wouldn't be all that original if they were under a pretense, maybe? Idk, just my thoughts.
Great work though, pos.
| | | Thanks, Observer. My Fleet Foxes review was pretty bad, so whatever. I just thought this was more sputnik-appropriate than anything else.
And pretense can also mean ostenation.
| | | Yeah that's true. I really think I need to increase my own vocab personally. That and this site uses that word too much or something haha
| | | Nice. I don't want to be difficult for the sake of being difficult.

"Delorean avoid the obnoxious pretense which follows their contemporaries . . . However, Delorean are just as original."
just curious as to who you're referring to with that sentence? which contemporaries?
also, "Sure, a dance-rock band such as Delorean trying to evoke images of Spain's beaches is ambitious" is a bit of a reach, seeing as the band is both from barcelona and play a heavily balearic mix of dance music, which is typically a spanish coast style.
good review otherwise, i'm not well versed with this genre so some of the references flew over my head (italian house, etc) but a nice read.
| | | just curious as to who you're referring to with that sentence? which contemporaries?
Vampire Weekend mos def.
Otherwise, thank you, Kirgasm. Italian house is really cool... one of my friends is like this techno-geek and he visits Europe every summer, so I'm bound to know all of the Balearic/cultural variants of electronic.
| | | no one commented on "bitchforks?" strange indeed.
| | | This isn't their first album

I still have no idea where people are getting the AC comparison from, but yeah.
Good review, the only thing I'd suggest is that you learn to string your sentences together a little bit more. Your descriptions and so on are fine, but it reads a bit start/stop sometimes. Reading your second paragraph is a bit like getting caught in a really annoying string of red lights.
And yeah, this isn't their debut.
| | | Fixed that debut part, and I'm about to fix the second paragraph.
| | | Classic album. Nice review. Pos.

I can sorta see it, but I don't buy the whole "if you don't like AC you probably won't like this" argument
| | | I don't know very many people who like Animal Collective but dislike Delorean or vice versa.
| | | I don't like AC at all really
I can kinda see the appeal of them, but to me the music doesn't seem to have, a heart I guess. Seems somewhat soulless, whereas I find a ton in this album/artist
| | | but you can see the appeal to them, so you can see the appeal to this.
| | | Well yeah, my rating shows that this appeals to me
| | | I guess im the opposite of deviant, prefering ac over this
| | | hi
| | | And Deviant, that's what I was getting at.
