Review Summary: Acres did NOT create anything new, but they did do Emo well.
There is nothing that pisses me off more than listening to an album made by a bunch of kids that is utterly fantastic. When I first heard Silos, Acres. one and only EP, I almost smashed my computer. Why can't I have this kind of talent?
This is, flat out, one of the best EPs that I have ever heard. I could listen to this over and over. I believe that in a world of people attempting to define and refine the sound known as Emo, Acres. accomplished it. The sound that they portray is nothing ground breaking, but it is probably the best portrayl of true Emo that I've heard in a long time.
My first thought about this album was, honestly, "Not fair." The fact that they're all still in high school, and so much farther ahead of me musically pissed me off. I moved past that quickly, though, and experienced this album as a whole. It's full of guitar tapping that's just finger-licking good. The songs never get boring, as they're all full of change, entire band switches that work absurdly well. One moment slow and melodic, a building up, pause, fast paced harsh. An old trick, but revitalized and used well in this album. Jordi's vocals are perfectly timed and executed, as well as brimming with passion that just explodes out of the music. The lyrics combound with Jordi's harsh, catchy yells create a vocal sound that can play your heart like a god damn violin. Aiden and Nick, the guitarists, work perfectly together, two different sounds complimenting and adding to each other. All of the songs have a certain melody to them, contributed by the guitar's sad but determined sound, while Jordi adds a certain harsh abruptness with his vocals. The music seems to move perfectly in sync with itself, swaying and changing all together. I know that seems obvious, but this band does it in a way where you can't help but marvel at it. Everything just works.
I'd sum this EP up rather easily: it's the only EP that can make me weep unconditionally almost every time I listen to it. The sheer emotion put in every song is palpable, the lyrics and music all screaming depression. Really, there isn't much to this album when it comes to deeper meaning, though. The lyrics are blunt, if figurative, the sound is not layered. Don't listen to this album if you're looking for something new and edgy, this EP is neither of those. Acres. did not revolutionize any sort of sound, but they did do a sound in a way which I envy. No one could play Emo like these boys did.
Acres. was short lived. Four months together, and they accomplished things that bands spend years attempting. They developed a cult following, planned a *full* summer tour with another band, as well as numerous shows with different bands, and made an album that will always have a place in my heart.
