Californication- Red Hot Chili Peppers- June 8, 1999
This is my first review....here goes........
After releasing One Hot Minute with ex-Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, the Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP) were eager to record a new album with 'original' guitarist John Frusciante (who was the band's second guitarist, after the late Hillel Slovak).
The new album that came to be was Californication.
Track Description
1. Around The World- Kicking off the album with a great bass intro compliments of Flea, this track represents a return to RHCP's funk roots. Funky lyrics, funky riffs, an all around fun track that you wont get sick of. 8/10
2. Parallel Universe- Another intro thrown at us by Flea, Parallel Universe steps up the volume and energy. There isn't too much to say about this song, because it isnt much different from other RHCP songs. Nonetheless, its a cool tune........7.5/10
3. Scar Tissue- Many chicks claim this to be their favorite RHCP song. It has a great, catchy main riff, and a beautiful solo that many beginning guitarists use as a stepping stone. Rumours are abound as to what the lyrics mean, but no matter what you take them to mean, its a great song...one of the best on the album...............9/10
4. Otherside- This song has a ridiculously catchy main riff, and it builds very well until the bass and guitar 'solo's. Nothing exceptional about it.....7/10
5. Get On Top- My all-time #1 RHCP song. Funky, catchy, and fun to listen to. Different from all the other tracks on the album. Fun lyrics to listen to and rap along with :) . I can't say enough about this song, but im tired so ill end it with..................100000/10
6. Californication- One of the most famous Chili Pepper songs of all time, this song is musically brilliant. Great main riff, great lyrics, great bass lines and drumming, and another cool, fairly simple, kick *** solo...............9/10
7. Easily- An average song, nothing bad about it but also nothing to rave about, it has a catchy little solo thats fun to play along with.....7/10
8. Porcelain- A lot of people dislike this song for its simplicity and the fact that it doesnt seem like a Red Hot Chili Peppers song, but its a beautifully sung song, and the guitar part (as hard to hear as it is) is very fitting. This song also has pretty good lyrics... 7.5/10
9. Emitremmus- My least favorite song on this album...I don't find that it has anything special going for it. Not a bad track, but not up to par with the rest of the album........5.5-6/10
10. I Like Dirt- To put it in a word.....FUN! I haven't looked into exactly what it means, but I know that its an easy listen. Fun riffs, and you dont have to think about anything while listening............8/10
11. This Velvet Glove- I dont really like this song too much...except for the line "It's such a waste to be wasted in the first place"....in fact...solid lyrics all around, but thats about all I REALLY like about it.....7/10
13. Purple Stain- Funky!!!!! some dirty-*** lyrics, and wicked guitar, bass, drum lines, all combine to make one of my favorite songs on the album....9/10
14. Right On Time- Random? I think so! Fun? Definitely! Good vocals? absolutely! cool guitar parts? most assuredly!......................9/10
15. Road Trippin- In my opinion, the best acoustic chili peppers song ever released, other than 'I Could Have Lied'...beautiful lyrics are beautiful sung by Anthony, while John and Flea take out their acoustics and create one of those songs that can make you depressed and happy at the same time......9.5/10
