Review Summary: Tokio Hotel changed their sound and did a GREAT job, with a few bumps along the road

Tokio Hotel's second English album, Humanoid, was not anything like I expected it to be after hearing (and loving) their previous CD, Scream, Humanoid is much more electronic sounding, yet it's mature and darker than Scream was. Tokio Hotel changed their sound and did one heck of a job. Tokio Hotel is made up of four boys, Bill (vocals) Tom (guitar) Georg (Bass guitar) and Gustav (drums).

English is not their first language--Tokio Hotel is a German band who is extremely popular in Europe. They gained fans all over the world and decided to try out recording and releasing English music, as well as German, so more people could understand the lyrics. But because of them being German, you hear Bill's accent--while it is not heavy, it can make some lines hard to understand.

Although, like any album, it's not perfect. The release of Humanoid (earlier said to be released in early 2009) was postponed to October 09, due to the fact that the band had to find time to write more songs. And because of that, some songs came out rushed feeling and not incredibly well written. Humanoid has several different versions out (the standard, deluxe, Hot Topic and iTunes.) and they have a total of 19 new songs. Some of the songs were overal EXCELLENT, showing everyone again how much of a power house the band is. Bill's vocal range is showcased in several songs, having him sing in lower tones (such as "Phantomrider", "World Behind My Wall" and "That Day") while others showed the world that Bill can go HIGH ("Love and Death", "Darkside of the Sun" and the title track "Humanoid" to name a few).

When it comes to the overall feeling the album had, it's a toss up between angry and depressing. Songs like "Screamin'" almost sounds like attempted metalcore--a failed attempt, but that song sure kicks ass. "That Day" is Tokio Hotel's darkest song on the album. It's powerful and has extremely well written lyrics that people can connect to. The title track, "Humanoid" is also a stand out, having huge guitar riffs, strong drums and excellently controlled vocals, going up and down, the song has no structure, but it sounds good that way. It's like going on a roller coaster ride. But then, of course, there are songs like "Attention" which sounds as if Tokio Hotel had some one like Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato or Miley Cyrus come and help them write it--and sing it. Listening to that song all I could think of was how much it sounded like a Demi Lovato song--not a good thing.

Unlike their first English album, Scream, which was full of songs with strong meaning, Humanoid had few of those. Over half of the songs felt pointless. The few ones that do have meaning ("That Day", "Phantomrider", "Humanoid", "World Behind My Wall" and "Zoom Into Me" mostly) are not catchy and take a few listens to really enjoy them.

Overall, Humanoid is truly a work of art--something that symbolizes growth and change in Tokio Hotel and I can honestly say I am behind those guys all the way. Changing your sound is not easy to do and it's a risk--a risk I'm glad they took. And I'm looking extremely forward to seeing how far these boys get with their next nest album. Good job Tokio Hotel!!

The only reason I know of this album was because of that stupid phone commercial.

The review is very fanboy/fangirl-ish, you give a pointless history in the beginning and don't do much to describe the sound of the album farther than HIGH and Low voices. Neg.

Yeah whatever, you're to your own opinion ;). I wrote this spur of the moment so....btw that phone commercial is amazing and if you don't like it, don't read stuff about it--it will make you annoyed...it might sound fangirlish cuz I am a fan girl and that's something you should learn to deal with. Fans (or people who hate the group and have no life so they go out writing hate notes about them) are the ones to write reviews. I also not only said the album has HIGH and low notes but I called it eletronic, pointless, dark, depressing and angry. Honestly there isn't much more to say--listen to it and then you write a review--I'd be happy to what you think

Don't worry I hate hip-hop too, and if you really break down how the album sounds and how it's different from the rest (I know it's hard, I've tried too) you could have potential, but Giving a history of the band, listing the different versions and then rattling off an "I like this song, but not these" isn't the way to go. As for some entry level recs I'll try to name a few. I'll put it on your one of your lists instead of the review.

Hmmm. Since I gave the band history I was able to tell about the accent, which helped with how it sounded--not totally pointless....listing the diff versions, i was gonna right the review differently at first, like a song by song thing but then i changed my mind and just kinda left the diff versions in there randomly and i didnt say "I like these, not those" but yeah...

You contradict yourself a lot in the review, and you shouldn't use words like "amazing" or "kicks ass" when trying to write a review. Sure you may think that but does it describe to the listener what it sounds like? Go into more detail. It's okay to be a fanboy/girl but you shouldn't let it get in the way of your writing. Look at it objectively.

Also you'll find that nobody like Tokio Hotel here.

Definitely not a good review. Reviews should not be overtly fanboy/girlish, as most reading the review are not acquainted with the album at hand. As such, you do VERY little to describe the sound presented. Check out some other reviews, preferably by staff or established reviewers, and emulate (not copy) their styles. Stick around, sputnik has much for those with an open mind...

There is nothing greater on earth than the music video to World Behind My Wall. It is the greatest thing ever filmed in the history of music cinematography.

awesome. so, they took time off to write songs, and because of that the songs turned out to suck? self-contradiction ftw. tons of that abound, plus the review sounds way too fangirlish for its own good. neg.

no dude (girl, whatever), just no. Review, like everyone already have said, contradicts itself too much and has a severe lack of detail. Plus there are countless grammar mistakes and sentence flow is almost zero. If you aren't an alt, then stick around and broaden your musical horizone (a lot) and in that case, welcome to the site. Won't neg, but review is bad.

I will never believe that this album is good, especially 4.5 good. Scream was an abomination and i'd like to give this one also a 1 just because it's Tokio Hotel, but because I have morals, I'm not going to do it.
