Review Summary: Charles Hamilton wishes he were this guy. But Charles Hamilton is glad he doesn't have such shitty producers, too.
One of Datpiff’s most hated rappers, Payso, also manages to be one of the year’s underrated artists. His punchlines on what seems like his millionth mixtape
Super Mario All Stars are purely silly, particularly on the beginning of the album with “Double Dragon” and “Mushroom World” (“I feel like Liberty City, doin grand theft with tha auto”), both tracks that sample the Mario theme, and show that this young artist has something to prove. Payso’s rapping is sort of a cross of Charles Hamilton’s nerdy love of video game humor, Lil Wayne’s ridiculous prowess to continue rapping no matter, and Gucci Mane’s Nintendo-esqe taste for beats taken to the next level. Hearing this youngin’ rap over lo fi Nintendo beats, he sounds sort of out of his league, but Payso’s don’t-give-a-f
uck attitude sort of makes it worth it.
Super Mario All Stars, however, falters because of it’s lo fi nature. The drums are completely abrasive, and interrupt the listeners’ experience, being so punchy that Pharrell would be offended. Along with that, and despite being a mere seven tracks long,
Super Mario All Stars has its fair share of filler tracks, in the form of the two closing tracks “Dedication” and “Hottest In The City”, both tracks where Payso forgets his nerdy white boyisms and sounds like your regular average Lil Wayne rip-off. In fact, other than the laugh-out-loud stoner rap of “Charlie Brown”, and the Mario samplers “Double Dragon” and “Mushroom World”, the mixtape is generally worthless. However, on those moments, Payso gets his act together perfectly, so if you want some nerdy rapper invading your ears with some hilarious punchlines and lo fi-ish environment, you should try this.
If that IS your thing!
