Review Summary: Overall, All Time Low are still awesome, Nothing Personal isn't their highlight like their old stuff. What else could I expect really? This ALWAYS happens to good bands when they get mainstream (Green Day, 311, Steve Rushton). I blame Hopeless Records. I

Ah, All Time Low. I've noticed this band is often known for their pop-punk sound with using just as much pop than punk, when, with other bands, it's usually more punk. This was their first album after their major mainstream success with "So Wrong, it's Right". I friggn' loved that album, and it's also a fan favorite. Think of these guys as a much more mature and emotional BLink 182, maybe as Alesana without screaming. All Time Low passed good enough for having an "emo" side, Alex Gaskarth is an amazing writer, they know how to make varieties out of one chord progression, I could go on and on about good they are. Like many other bands (Green Day, 311 as examples), this band has taken a step down since their fame. Nothing Personal is one example. Hopeless Records obviously didn't think they would get this much out of them. Yeah, Yeah, I'll stop babbling about the past. Here's Nothing Personal.
I'll start out by saying "Nothing personal, All Time Low, but PLEASE fire your producer!". These guys are awesome, but they kind of took a step down. I love "Weightless", their first hit from the album, but the drums don't even sound real! I think that's kind of an insult to drummer Rian Dawson. I wonder what he thought when he first heard it. As of other over-production, I definately think "Too Much" (Which is litterally what the title is) is one of those examples. It sounds like trash you would hear in in the Abercrombie stores. Also, in "Walls", that song could have been cool, could have been more loved, Alex is a great writer, and the power chords are spot-on, but unfortunately they decided to go all "Metro Station" on us. I;ve also noticed all the "whoas",and "ohs" that go on with the techno sound. It's not a bad thing with vocals, it only means you're having fun, but the techno sound does ruin it

My other problem is how they increased the "pop" side of them. "Hello, Brooklyn" reminds me a little too much of Miley Cyrus's "Fly on the wall", sounds like a night club song, but is at least catchy. I'm starting to think that All Time Low is becoming one of those bands you've seen in TV and movies when their record company has too much control over them and just wanna make money. The lyrics tend to be a little screwy, but what I like about this band is that they often make up for that by being catchy and entertaining. Take example: Damned if I Do Ya (Damned If I Don't), once in a while you'll hear a line that doesn't feel right, (“I fought it for a long time now, while drowning in a river of denial") and it sounds a little "showtuney", but they have a good drummer, Alex is a great vocalist, and it's something to have fun with. I also kinda like "Lost at Stereo". It's poppy, but not annoying (Except for the repetetive chanting of "Lost at Stereo), and that happens a lot throughout Nothing Personal.

I just wanna mention, I friggn' LOVE Rian Dawson as a drummer, even in the bad songs, he at least brings something good every time. He's like the Ringo Starr of All Time Low, he's no Kieth Moon, but he's entertaining (Actually, I think he's better than Ringo Starr).

When they aren't trying to make it into Abercrombie's playlist, they have a lot of good upsides as well. "Stella" is definately one of my favorites. This is TRUE pop-punk. Yeah, it's a love song, but it's not cheesy. This has a perfect balance between pop and punk and is probably one of the best things about the album. "Break your little heart" is kind of weird to me. I like it, but I don't know what it is! So I'm thinking that might be a small start to something new. We can call it "Grunge Pop". Too poppy to be grunge, but the lead guitar and weird distortion is too grungy to be rock. It';s an alright headbanger at a concert, but still sounds like it could fit in at a night-time gay club. Still, good song.

A weird, but good thing about this band is they are actually kind of emo (ESPECIALLY in their recent album). I've heard this debate before, and I'm only saying they are "kind of" emo, but "Sick little games" (Which I love cause it reaches out to me) and "Therapy", which sounds like Bradley Nowell from Sublime came back to life and ended their concert, are good examples. Actually, "Therapy" is rather likeable. It's not amazing, but it's memorable, and makes up for the overproduction crap of “Too Much” and “Walls".

I know I'm saying too much, so I'll try to wrap this up. I definately have hope for this album after hearing "Keep the Change, You Filthy Animal" and "A Party Song (The Walk of Shame)", especially the second one. I think the party song should have ended the album, because that one is amazing. Although this album's punk sound (ha!) wasn't taken as well as before, there were unsides and I have hope for this band.

"I'm starting to think that All Time Low is becoming one of those bands you've seen in TV and movies when their record company has too much control over them and just wanna make money." Lol, you think? Also why are you quoting yourself at one point in the early paragraphs. Also you're gonna get torn apart for using "emo" here.

Review is kinda bad. Talk about stuff that doesn't matter a lot and theres no real description of the music beside "You'll hear this in Abercrombie" or whatever. But you tried, and these really aren't catastrophic errors or anything. So that's something.

what is it with this album? review #6 and it's not even an album that's ever been any sort of big news or highly anticipated or sported controversy

A weird, but good thing about this band is they are actually kind of emo (ESPECIALLY in their recent album).

Dude, this sounds nothing like actual emo music. This is punk pop. Get it right goddammit. WHY CAN'T ANYONE USE EMO RIGHT?

So wrong it's right wasn't actually that terrible but this just seems so much more empty that it is terrible. Your rating says 2.5 and right below it in the album summary section you say they aren't so bad. I just don't get it.

hi you asked me for some help so here is some help

well, let's get down to business. first thing i see as the reader is your summary, and it's pretty sloppy. first of all, it's written with short sentences--fragments, if you will--and it looks a little 'unprofessional'. here's some help:

"Overall, All Time Low are still awesome, Nothing Personal isn't their highlight like their old stuff."

^^^okay, first off, let's get some grammar stuff done: after the phrase 'are still awesome,' you either need to replace the comma with a semicolon or add 'but' before Nothing Personal, so, more like this:

"Overall, All Time Low are still awesome, but Nothing Personal isn't their highlight like their old stuff."

however, still more qualms: 'isn't their highlight' is a little awkward when phrased with another part of the sentence that uses the word 'their' (in this case being 'like their old stuff'). so, i'd replace it with 'Nothing Personal isn't a highlight like their old stuff.' and yet, still, 'a highlight' sounds a little weird to me. here's what i suggest:

"Overall, All Time Low still show promise, but, on Nothing Personal, it simply fails to translate to album form."

because i feel like the point you're trying to get across with the summary is that All Time Low are still a good -band-, it's just that this album isn't very good. in my opinion, what i posted above still retains the same core message as your old summary; it just states it more eloquently. the above 'tips' i gave you, though serving no purpose in this case (because i just ended up scrapping the whole thing), should point you in the right direction when writing more stuff like this.

"Ah, All Time Low. I've noticed this band is often known for their pop-punk sound with using just as much pop than punk, when, with other bands, it's usually more punk."

^^^here is your first sentence (technically two sentences; whatever). it's fine up until 'with using just as much'; i'd suggest a change to this:

"I've noticed that this band is often known for their pop-punk sound, which uses just as much"

reads better, doesn't it? as well, "just as much pop than punk" should be changed; don't use 'than' in that case.

"just as much pop as punk" is better, even if you feel a little awkward using 'as' twice when both usages so close to each other.

as well, i might suggest cutting the sentence off right there. so, try this:

"I've noticed that this band is often known for their pop-punk sound, which uses just as much pop as punk. This is different from most other pop-punk bands, which usually utilize more punk than pop." (notice that 'than' is correctly used only when comparing two things IN WHICH one is 'more' than the other.)

"I friggn' loved that album, and it's also a fan favorite."

i would suggest straying away from colloquial phrases like 'friggn'', but, if you will, i believe it's 'friggin''. (in other words, you are missing an 'i'.) i would also suggest changing the second half of the sentence. something like:

"I [insert word] loved that album, and it was indeed the album that endeared so many to the group."

might seem a little overly verbose compared to before, but it reads a little better and is more formal. as well, i put '[insert word]' so you can decide if you want to keep something like 'friggin'' in there. just to avoid confusion.

"Think of these guys as a much more mature and emotional BLink 182, maybe as Alesana without screaming."

this seems a little disjointed compared to your last sentence; doesn't flow well. try comparing how -good- the album was to their overall sound, thus connecting the two sentences. so, something like this

"So Wrong, It's Right also set up All Time Low's core sound; sort of like a matured Blink-182, or perhaps a scream-less Alesana."
