Review Summary: An amazing that really showcases Sublime's excellent musicianship.

This is my first review, so I'll take the easy route and do a track-by-track review.

1. Garden Grove
One of Sublime's most under-rated song in my opinion. The song starts off with Brad doing a slow rap about the way his life is for about 2 minutes. After this, the song switches to more of a dub feel, with lots of scratching and sampling, which lasts for the remaining two minutes. Although I didn't like this song at first, it grew on me very quickly, as the rest of the songs did. 4.5/5

2. What I Got
This is the Sublime song everyone knows, and for a good reason. Another rap- style song, however this song puts a little twist in, throwing in acoustic guitar over a tight drum beat. This is a great sing- along song and just has a very nice vibe throughout. 5/5

3. Wrong Way
Those new to Sublime will be a little surprised when this number rolls around. The band leaves behind the quasi- rapping found in the previous two songs and goes straight up ska. Starting off slow and mellow, the song takes right off after the first twenty second. Make sure to stay tuned for the nice little trumpet solo around 2/3 of the way through. 4/5

4. Same In The End
This one has a sort of ska-ish feeling during the verses, and takes on a more punky or hard rock feel during the chorus. One of the few songs one the album that isn't really "fun" to listen to, this is probably the worst song on the album. 3.5/5

5. April 29, 1992 (Miami)
This song is pure rap, no singing involved. A fairly long song, with Brad rapping about the riots following the Rodney King incident. The lyrics are interesting, and shouting along to "Riots on the streets of ____" near the end is a blast. A great song, but maybe not one to play around police officers. 4/5

6. Santeria
The other Sublime song that everyone knows. A very chill song, with some kinda violent lyrics. Midway through is a very soulful, but short guitar solo. This is the first song where Brad really showcases his mastery of guitar. This is a very enjoyable song and (you might notice a pattern forming) very fun to sing along to. 5/5

7. Seed
Starts off as a punk song. Quickly switches to raggae. Back to punk. Then back to raggae. This continues throughout the song. Then comes another guitar solo, which is also very good. I personally like this song a lot, but find that most people tend to stray away. Surely not for everyone. 4/5

8. Jailhouse
A very disturbing song covering the subject of jail rape. Strangely, it is also the most laid- back and relaxing song on the album. A very tasty bass line flows under Brad's soothing vocals and some not too shabby guitar work. Also, this song has more soloing by Brad. Definitely one of the high points of the album, this song is just damn nice to listen to. 5/5

9. Pawn Shop
Perhaps my least favorite song on the album. It almost has the same feel as the last song, but with a much darker tone to it. Extended guitar solos are front and center here. The problem with this song is it's six minutes long, which is more time then I like to listen to someone repeat "Down here at the pawn shop" over and over. This would be a great song if it weren't so long and repetitive. 3.5/5

10. Paddle Out
An awesome rock-your-socks-off punk-surf song. Starts off fast as hell and never lets up. Also has an awesome surf-rock guitar solo. This song is very short, clocking in at around a minute. 4.5/5

11. The Ballad of Johnny Butt
"We've got a brand new dance". Be prepared to hear that line. A lot. This is another laid-back song with an eerie tone, similar to Pawn Shop. It is also repetitive, like Pawn Shop. The thing that saves this song is that it is only one-third the length of Pawn Shop, ending before it gets annoying. Not a bad song overall. 3.5/5

12. Burritos
The slacker's anthem. Brad sings in an apathetic sounding voice about how he doesn't feel like doing a god damn thing today. The song is essentially one long guitar solo with vocals on top, and even though it is four minutes long, it seems to go by much faster than that. A truly excellent song. 5/5

13. Under My Voodoo
If you weren't convinced of Brad's god-like musicianship by this point, this is the song that will change your mind. Brad play a solo on his guitar and harmonizes with his voice. Simply breathtaking sound. With some punk rock snippets and even a raggae breakdown near the end, this another song that you simply cannot miss. Did I mention the breathtaking guitar work? 5/5

14. Get Ready
A song about weed. Brad sings about "informas" and their wrongdoings. Has a very laid-back reggae feel to it, and also has some scratching and dub style sampling. Another great song, although those opposed to marijuana use will not agree with its message. 4.5/5

15. Caress Me Down
An amazing song that has Brad singing about getting busy with a woman. There is some very nice production in this track, especially with the bass and the claps. The highlight of the song, is definitely Brad's extended rapping in Spanish, which is funny as hell and very impressive. Probably the most humorous song on the album, this is not to be missed. Definitely not for the kiddies, though. 5/5

16. What I Got (Reprise)
An acoustic version of an already acoustic song. This is pretty much the same as the normal version but it sounds more organic, I think this is actually the better version of the song. With the chanting and clapping at the end, this song would have made a great ending to the album. 5/5

17. The last song on the album, this is one of the weaker songs. It has some nice scratching and sampling, kinda like Garden Grove. The problem with this song is it feels a little over- produced, and it also seems to go on for a little too long. Not a bad song by any means, but it's nothing great. 3.5/5

Try doing a non- TBT review next time... they definitely as well of a job at summarizing the sound/strengths/weaknesses of the
album. Or, if you aren't comfortable with that, try adding a summary to the album at the beginning and end.

Plus, I know it's your first, but I would say it's virtually impossible to justify a "classic" with a track-by-track alone.

I think seed and in the end are pretty good songs, but for the purposes of the review i just wanted to show that they aren't as accessible as the other songs.

I have yet to listen to anything from this band. I guess I am a bit overdue.

"Doin' Time" (the last song) is one of the very best songs on this album, in my opinion. Definitely the best summer anthem I can think of this side of the Will Smith song.
