Review Summary: At first appearances, this seems not to reach the mark but time allows the lyrics and guitar work to filter through to their targets.
The Cribs, now with added Johnny Marrism, have returned and don't disappoint. Honestly, when I first heard this I was kind of underwhelmed. A few listens changed my opinion and I urge you to do the same. Some really great tracks here with Marr's guitar smothered all over them.
The opener, We Were Aborted, is the leader in all ways. It's strong lyrically and drags you right into it. It's catchy, full and fast. "To make you feel important, 'Cause you knew we were aborted". It leaves me hanging at the end wanting more everytime. Great guitar work here, as there is all over the album.
Cheat on Me, the lead single is a grower i'll admit but is a good track. An obvious single choice but not the best track on the album.
The title track has a memorable line, "It's just a shame you can't, Ignore the ignorant" which resonates for a bit. City of Bugs is reminiscent of Sonic Youth and displays some awesome work on Marr's part.
Victims of Mass Production and Last Years Snow are other stand out songs.
An impressive record, possibly their best, but then again it's something different now that Marr has joined the band. Lyrics are as strong as ever but come second and are slightly hidden behind the vast musical creativity this time.
The Cribs have certainly still not comprimised and are a "real" band, in the truest sense. Something rare these days.
