Review Summary: BMTH have created a mediocre disasterpiece that takes up room in the music industry...
This is Bring Me The Horizon's 3rd album (This Is What The Edge Of Your Seat Was Made For, Count Your Blessings), and they're definitely going down a different path, moving further away from their 'Deathcore' roots (The normal world is a scary place, ain't it Oli?) than they ever have before. For me personally, this is no improvement. BMTH are still yet another mediocre band, taking up room in the world of music.
Vocals & Lyrics
Oli's voice on this album sounds like nothing from the 'Count Your Blessings' album, which resembled Angela Gossow's voice. Oli still has the death growls, but when he 'sings' clearly, his voice annoys the hell out of me.
Some of the lyrics on 'Suicide Season' are really, REALLY stupid...
"We will never sleep, 'cuz sleep is for the weak, and we will never
rest, 'till we're all f--king dead"
- Diamonds Aren't Forever
...and another...
"And after everything you put me through, I should have f--king
pissed on you"
- No Need For Introductions...
Some, clearly not all, are meaningful:
"If only sorrow could build a staircase, our tears could show the way.
I would climb my way to heaven and bring him back home again"
- Suicide Season
Guitars
For most songs (including 'The Comedown', 'Chelsea Smile' and 'Suicide Season') the guitars are tuned to drop A, which is as low as In Flames play if anyone cares. 'It Was Written In Blood' and others are in drop C, which is as low as Bullet For My Valentine play...
The guitars are definitely creative, there's no doubt about that. They're fast, and especially in 'The Comedown', fused with Techno-y elements.
Drums
The drumming is definitely the best part of the album. They're very, very fast and creative. Matthew clearly uses two footpedals and plays his own beats, separate from the guitarists. The drumming all through the album is great, especially on 'The Comedown'.
Individual Song Ratings (Out Of 5)
1.The Comedown - 3
2.Chelsea Smile - 3.5
3.It Was Written In Blood - 3
4.Death Breath - 3.5
5.Football Season Is Over - 3
6.The Sadness Will Never End - 1.5
7.Sleep With One Eye Open - 1.5
8.Diamonds Aren't Forever - 2
9.No Need for Introductions, I've Read About Girls Like You on the Back of Toilet Doors - 2
10.Suicide Season - 5
My favourite song on this album is Suicide Season. The last 4 minutes are built entirely on effects (and I'm not one for crappy, synth-y effects) but it's a great song, and a great way to end a ***ty album. (I can't belive BMTH have managed to write a decent song.) So, finally, to summerise, BMTH have created a mediocre album that takes a crap on the world of music...
