Review Summary: They're startin' to lose it.
A lot of people on this website seem to dislike ZZ Top, but these are all people who just don't understand good old rock 'n roll. I'm thinking, "How can you not like ZZ Top? They got some rockin' singles!". But then, after listening to this, I thought, "Wow, they musta listened to Afterburner!".
This album is bland in every sense of the word. The lyrics are dumb, but who cares, it's ZZ Top. More importantly, it's ROCK AND ROLL, a genre based on pure simplicity. Even the guitar-playing, which is normally awesome on a ZZ Top record, just seems too average.
The opener, Sleeping Bag, gets things off to a pretty good start, but from there, things just go downhill. Woke Up With Wood is good in a funny sort-of way, and Can't Stop Rockin' is, well, pretty rockin'. But everything else either sounds all the same, or just sounds bad. ZZ Top found a good formula, and they certainly stuck with it, but rather than this being a good thing, like with Motorhead or AC/DC, it just isn't here.
I like ZZ Top. I do. But this album's just bland.
