Review Summary: This band hailing from New-Hampshire, is clearly a very promising six piece, that will indeed place a new stepping stone towards a new element of "screamo".
Our Last Night, is one of my favourite bands. Am I biased because of this statement? Yes. But I'm trying to do a fair review here so I'll retrace my feelings and sentiments back to when I first had heard their songs.
The first thoughts I had thought when I had first heard Our Last Night (OLN) was that wow the instruments are impressive! Which is, first and foremost, the most notable thing about Our Last Night. Young Matt Wentworth truly shows promise with this debut full length album.
Now, one thing that must be understood about OLN is the fact that it is another "scene-core" band, but do not be so hasty to group them into all the scream-sing bands. OLN sets themselves apart from the generic Post-Hardcore feel, with the sound. Yes they dress in tight clothes, and yes they have long hair in their face, but what it all comes down to is sound. The guitars and drums are spectacular, and yes I believe they deserve that statement. It takes an enormous amount of skill to be able to play the guitar as well as Matt, and the drums flow quite well with the songs.
Now the screams. Yes he is undeveloped but cut Trevor Wentworth some slack. He was only 11 when he joined the band and they signed quite fast. I think that is quite the accomplishment and it needs to be noted. Too many of reviewers are quick to dismiss the screaming in this band. Have you heard "Danger: Wildman"? Trevor is featured in that song, and his screams have developed into something quite impressive. Yes when I first heard OLN I thought the screams were quite irritating, but I soon discovered I enjoyed OLN, screams included.
To Summarize:
Melodic Vocals (clean): 9/10 - Room for improvement always, but I think this particular singer has simply put a ton of talent, and I always enjoy his voice.
Harsh vocals (screams): 6/10 - I think when this record was made, Trevor did not have the range developed screamers have, and the next record produced with him in it will feature a completely different sound, with much more range.
Bass: 8/10 - Bass is always hard for me to review because I do not pay much attention to it, but in OLN the bassist always sounds in tune with the guitars, and he backs them up quite well to provide an incredible combination, especially on the breakdowns.
Guitars: 9/10 - Only one thing needs to be said about the guitars. They flow amazingly, no improvement needed. Unlike your generic "chug chug chug" sound, OLN applies a very well needed refreshment to the genre, and they do it with finesse.
Drums: 9/10 - Tim Molly is a very good drummer and on songs like "Escape", "Running The Clocks", and "I Have Fought A Measureless Battle", it becomes quite clear that he is a very valuable part of OLN.
