Review Summary: A unique album from one of the most original metalcore bands.
Originality; This is something all music fans look for in the bands they listen to. They want everything from vocals to drums to sound nothing like all of the other bands in the music scene. The problem is, today's music scene is overcrowded with bands ripping off each others sound, and this is even more evident in the metalcore scene, which is known for every band having "cookie-cutter" screaming and breakdowns that you swore you just heard in another song. Thankfully, music fans were treated to something special, with Haste The Day's release of "When Everything Falls".
Jimmy Ryan - vocals
Brennan Chaulk - guitar, vocals
Jason Barnes - guitar
Mike Murphy - bass, vocals
Devin Chaulk - drums
The album kicks off with "Fallen", and within just a few seconds, Jimmy Ryan's coarse scrams blast through your speakers, showing you that they mean business. Shortly after, clean vocals come in to give you a breather from Ryan's vocals, but as the song progresses, there is no loss in momentum, as the onslaught continues. With this one song, you get the feeling that Haste The Day is, well, actually different.
Ryan's coarse vocals are by no means the best or the most original in the metalcore genre, but they definitely bring something to the table that others can't. Although Ryan doesn't posses a very far range on his screams, they are still some of the most powerful yet to be heard, as they are tiring just to listen to. As for the guitars, Chaulk and Barnes do a great job of contrasting Ryan's vocals, using quick but difficult riffs that aren't the main focal point of the song, but still are noticeably well done . On to the drums; Chaulk does a magnificent job on keeping up the tempo of the song with pounding double bass that most metalcore drummers can't even compare to. There is no way to describe Chaulk other than a human war machine.
Going back to "Fallen", this one song basically sums up the album; A heavy assault that refuses to slow down. It's what metalcore has been needing for years, and hopefully it has inspired other bands to branch out from bland, unoriginal music."When Everything Falls" is definitely worth checking out.
