Formed in 1998,Ont Canada, disbanded after their first show, and rebuilt three years later from the core lineup of guitarist Jeff Davis and singer Connor Lovat-Fraser, Boys Night Out first carved out their territory in 2002 with their debut EP, Broken Bones And Bloody Kisses. Released on the U.S. hardcore label OneDaySavior, the disc showcased BNO’s flair for combining the melodic with the morbid (via Lovat-Fraser’s wry, sadistic lyrics), winning over fans with its singing-screaming balance well before “screamo” had become a music-industry buzzword. U.S. touring followed; and, by the time they were ready to record their Ferret Music debut, Make Yourself Sick, BNO had gotten their first taste of fame outside of their home country—but, as the old cliché goes, they hadn’t seen anything yet.
Though it was recorded on a shoestring budget, Make Yourself Sick was nonetheless a massive-sounding debut album. As typified by the single “I Got Punched In The Nose For Sticking My Face In Other People’s Business,” the disc was a progressive pop-punk romp, packed with handclaps, sing-along choruses and harmonized riffs. But, in typical BNO fashion, Make Yourself Sick’s polished outer surface was also the Trojan horse through which the band sneaked their lyrical dark side. What fans didn’t realize, however, was that the same sort of light-dark combination that was earning BNO their rep was also making the band painfully aware of their own place in the underground.
“Machine used the analogy of being stuck inside the fishbowl: Before now, they were our songs, and we recorded them, and that was it,” Davis says. “So in that respect it was hard, giving up our babies; but with songs like these, when you’re trying to fit everything you want to listen to into the space of one record, having an outside perspective really pushes you harder to make it work.”-BoysNightOut website
Added- Jeff Davis guitar/vocals left the band but then return sometime after touring with emery I believe. But then returned and helped break down the story he wrote which inturn became TrainWreck's theme.
-New drummer(Brian Southall) was added near the end creation of TrainWreck from band In Dire Need....not sure.
-Kara Dupuy added in on synth/vocals...I believe she did some vocals from Brain Southall ex-band.
Impressions of BNO and TrainWreck:
I loved BNO right after hearing their Debut Pop-Punk/Emo-core album "Make Yourself Sick". This album had many good hits and showcased their musical talent. After hearin this album I listened to their more Hardcore/Semi-Screamo(please dont bitch about my Music terminology you cry babies) Ep "Broken Brones Bloody Kisses". Which IMO was one of the ebst Eps ive ever heard. To some BNO fans I even own "Your My Canvas" the Pre "Broken Brones Bloody Kisses" Ep.
When i heard that BNO were in the studio recording their new Sophmore album i was really excited. After alot of searhing I found a leaked song early on....Composing and mixed emotions occured.
*Long Note before I start the rating of each song.
I see many bands being bashed on the reviews for a change or progression in their music. I.e underoath, Atreyu, A Static Lullaby etc. To these people(mostly reviewers) you are very biased. Bands dont just stick to one section of a genre. You people dont understand cause your probably little hardcore/Indie kids trying to stay as far away from the mainstream cuz you think its "cool". Personally I like Underoaths progression, except Their only chasing safety is extremely flawed instrumentally. Atreyu's the curse was an amazing album and over shined their last. Ok ASL Faso Latido was crap compared to ADFTB. All these bands live are amazing, they play both new and old which create a great song. ASL was amazing live, even though some songs off of Faso Latido werent great. They still get you pumping, same for Underoath and Atreyu.
On to the Review....
1.Introducing: Not much here, its basically a intro describing the story of the Patient who the album is based around.
2.Dreaming: Good song with very catchy and unique guitar riffs. Connor does a great job on vocals. The musical break down is excellent as well. This song is about the nightmare which he has that makes him strangle his wife. 7/10
3.Waking: Similar to Dreaming. Good vocals again and the same catchy guitar riffs. Gets almost to catchy and now BNO is using chorus which arnt present in MYS. Both Waking and Dreaming very emo yet unique. Also this song is about the patient waking up to see that he has killed his wife and he is calling 911. 7.5/10
4.Sentencing: Not much to say about this song. Prob woarst song on album. Poor instrumentals on this song and vocals arnt that great. Its about his sentencing, to either send him to jail or a mental hospital. 5.5/10
5.Medicating: Their Single of their album. Very Catchy, Very Pop, Very good. I personally don't like very catchy music but after hearing this song a couple of times its excellent. Guitars and Bass really shine here. Bassist Dave Costa always have fast paced bass lines that also stand out in all BNO's songs. Even if this music is very poppy it still has signs of their rock hardcore abilities. Great song listen to it. Oh and its about the patients stay at the mental hospital and recieving medication. 8.5/10
6.Purging: Here we go now BNO shows a littl BBBK style. This song leads more to Hardcore type of music with screaming vocals and hardcore guitar riffs. Get ending of this song with the vocals "as my world turns black, and I fall". Patient was released from the mental hospital and is now trying to continue with his life. 9/10
7.Relapsing: God I just wanted to say I hate the fact they added in this girl in the band. This song is slow with Connor and Kara taking turns singing. Nothing special, ok breakdown at the end. I believe this song is about the Patient having illusions of his wife talking to him. 6/10
8.Recovering: Nothing special about this song. Goes hand in hand with their Poppy rock songs. About then patients recovery *lol*. 6.5/10
9.Composing: When i first heard this song it was bittersweet for me. Cause i realized that the track didnt have any screaming in it and that the whole album could be like this. But the song was amazing. The extend version has the instruments almost silence then leading up to Connor quite vocals "It's all about the song in my head The one where the audience is all dead". Then away with the fast paces lyrics and guitars "These days they're allowingVisitation to aid in my rehabilitation". Not as poppy as the rest of the songs which is good and is for sure a classic BNO song. Im iffy about what this song means...hes gone crazy and is now killing people? 10/10
10.Disintegrating: Not a great song, its kinda bland and no great anything. Its ok to listen to but i usually skip over it. Its about the patient abusing drugs and alchol. 6/10
11.Healing: a pretty solid song with great vocals. One of the best on the album. Guitars go great with the lyrics and vocals by Connor. Its about the Patient waiting for the doctors house call. 9/10
12.Dying: A mix bewteen an outro and a song. Not bad to listen to once or twice to get the whole feel of the album. Has the doctor talking about how he failed on his patient and how the room he enters smells of roting stuff and alchol. This is the point where the patient dies. Very Eerie but amazing ending lyrics when the doctors says "and somehow, he's smiling at me, i think he's whispering something, no, not just whispering, i think he's singing......" then the patient "the lines i wear around my wrist are there to prove that i exist" (someone call an ambulance, because something's not right *from MYS) (the smell of her perfume struggles to cover everything) to connor's low singing "we were inseparable" being repeated till the song and a great album ends. 7.5/10
Conclusion: BNO has changes alot since BBBK and probably has lost some fan base but no doubt is TrainWreck an album worth picking up. You can argue it being better or woarst then MYS but either way BNO has made a good transtion away from screamo/emo-core.
