Review Summary: If Johnny Cash only knew how to sing... He might like this.
A great break from the alt-rock stylings of thrice. Dustin branches out into some really quality folk, acoustic, blues, and good old fashioned rock in this album. If you come here expecting Thrice, leave now. Dustin purposely left that out for the Thrice albums. A very good starting solo effort. The vocals are smooth and well toned. Expert album.
I knew you before is a very well done, stripped down, bluesy song. I love the main riff, interesting noodling on the guitar enough to keep the listener tapping his foot along with Dustin. His melodies are fantastic and catchy. This song, like most, keeps me singing throughout it's entirety. 4.5/5
Pistol is actually my good friend's wedding song, so I am biased toward liking this song. Softer, but it shows his affectionate song. If you can't get into love songs, than steer clear. But thankfully, he stays away from the cheese of the "baby, i love you"s. 4/5
I believe is an ok track. It isn't the greatest, but it does have a nice little blues lick. It has, however, been used to death. So he doesn't receive high marks for creativity guitar-wise, but his vocals keep it together enough to keep me listening. He just makes me want to sing with him, so I can't hate it. 3/5
The title track, Please Come Home, I don't think does the album justice. It's good, but not the best. I see the message he was trying to portray, but I think it wasn't nailed here. It's definitely well written, but just not the most interesting. 3/5
I think Blood and Wine is the best song on the album. The lyrics are creative and very off the beaten path. The trashy drum set is perfect for this tune. It reminds me of Johnny Cash stylings with better vocals. (sorry) The stand up bass fits like a glove. Just a great tune. A refreshing change from the typical song off a singer's solo project. 5/5
Consider the Ravens is another well written song that just makes the listener sing along. Very relaxed and good feeling. I find it interesting he includes God this bluntly in his music. I respect that. Whether I agree or not, I respect it. 4/5
Weary saints kind of blends into the background for me. It isn't bad, but nothing makes me want to listen to it like some of the other tracks. It's just kind of bleh. Ok catchiness, ok riffing, nothing special production-wise. 2.5/5
Blanket of Ghosts is a great song. The organ is a nice change. Very old school feeling. Dustin was meant to sing the blues in this song. I can feel him just through his inflections. Powerful song, and powerful ending to a solid album. 4.5/5
