Review Summary: Forfeit Misfortunes is a respectable album that will not jump out at you through all the other bands playing the same style of music. Overall just a pedestrian album that never really wows the listener.

Underneath The Gun deliver their sophomore album on Ferret in the form of Forfeit Misfortunes. Underneath The Gun hails from Corona, CA and brings forth their Christian Metalcore sound to two genres that have heard the same thing again and again. The thing with bands like this though, is they rarely stay around because of the abundance of the same thing by bands that are more skilled at what they do. Will Underneath The Gun be a victim of this, or one of the bands hat stay around due to their talent level?
The first thing I realized on my first listen was the fact that the “clean”est vocals are bad, like really bad. Harrison does improve as his lows are a mixed bag of being great or being cringe worthy. The high point for Harrison is that his mids are pretty good. Moving on to the guitars I would like to start with the breakdowns. The album is so packed with them it’s like a Wal-mart on a Sunday afternoon. They do add a bit to the songs as they have more of a deathcore sound than a metalcore sound to them.
Getting to the guitar riffs, Danny and Trevor shows some potential with some riffs that are not half-bad. They have two respectable solos, one each on “Reflection Of The Commonwealth” and “Shawshank Absolution” but are somewhere in the fifty/fifty range on the generic/nongeneric scale. The drummer, Isaac, does not wow me at all with anything he does on his set. As usual, the bass stays behind the drums not being heard. I would like to give credit to the band for trying something a bit different on “No Place For Pardon”.
Forfeit Misfortunes is a respectable album that will not jump out at you through all the other bands playing the same style of music. If you are a fan of the band you may like it, other than that you should check out their Myspace first to see if you like what you hear. Overall just a pedestrian album that never really wows the listener.
