Review Summary: The most beautiful moments always pass so quickly...

Closure. There could not have been a more apt name for this EP. The curtain is falling on 2008 but the show isn't quite over. There is still one last piece to perform, one last song to sing. That song is Closure, and this is the end. And when the music fades, and the lights go off you feel as though a little piece of you died with the last note and nothing will ever be able to replace it. The sheer beauty of this taste of Closure left me stricken, silently pondering what Epilogue must have been like. If only they had known they were throwing away a diamond...

Closure begins with a sweet, hopeful melody that dies as soon as it is conceived and fades into a tormented and forlorn riff. Clean vocals mark the end of the introduction and the tempered growls throw you into the eye of a caustic storm of melody. The guitar wanders along roads less traveled, stumbling through wounded harmonies and bleeding fresh life into a bleak existence in world where speed is obsolete. The disturbing twang of a lone acoustic guitar hides behind a wall of ethereal harmony, and occasionally it pokes through the barricades of sound to unleash a shadowy chord upon the silence. What the voice does not say, the music speaks clearly, welcome to hell.

Your Gallows does not play at hope; instead it launches the album even further into the abyss. Devastating riffs and the controlled chaos of the drums claw at your feet and the merciless growls pound in your ears. This time, there is no pleasure in an acoustic melody or sanction in clean vocals. There is only the constant feeling of hopelessness wrapped up in the sheer brutality of the vocals. The pervasive fluidity of the drums and the guitar encroaches on the remnants of a dying light as they churn on through a shattered solo and fade off into a deep and empty silence.

The Absence begins in a way that is similar to Closure, but leaves out one thing; hope. From the very first note, the Absence speaks of a depression and a meaningless life. Once more the growls shatter the melody and spill out over the song, reshaping it into an epically tragic verse that fades back into the intro. The pattern repeats itself taking you by the hand and dragging you through the introduction and another darkened verse, but this time it leads into an expertly placed clean section that is followed by a touching acoustic interlude. However, the beautiful moments never last, and the frailty of the acoustic is torn away and replaced by the screaming electrics and the lethal precision of the drums. The screams of the vocalist pierce the disturbing harmony and grip the song in their ragged and desperate clutches. Their hold is temporarily broken by a dense section of growling before the song is thrust unceremoniously into a beaten melody and a skeletal and apocalyptic guitar solo. The solo reaches its climax in a blinding fury of notes before the song trails off into a deep and foreboding silence. And then, before you realize it, it’s over.

If the rest of Epilogue was anything like Closure then there is no doubt in my mind that this album would rise to ranks of the classics of death metal, but we’ll never be sure now. May descent productions know the wrath of God.

I will be coming across as a dick with this.

But what are you actually trying to encompass in your writing style? Are you trying to put the sounds into words, or the emotions they invoke? It is hard for me personally to imagine what the music would be like, based on this review, if I had not actually heard it already.

I can only think that people would be split into two camps when they read this review: 1) believe you're highly passionate about the music, or 2) think you're being incredibly pretentious.

I've never really written anything like this before it's just something I felt like doing. Nah, people on this site already know that I'm too stupid to be pretentious.

Secondly, I am very passionate about this music, as seen in the ridiculous review. If you noticed I pointed out already that this review sucked.

I see, I was too much of a lazy bum to read the comments! That aside, I'm not saying the review is bad (although you seem to be implying it is), it's just hard to digest. But anyway, experimenting with reviews should help you grow as a writer, so more power to you.

Review aside, I don't like their growls but somehow I can't stop this EP from playing over and over all day.

Being pretentious comes hand in hand with being extremely passionate, it is almost impossible to separate the two. It's just in the way this is worded and the word choice you used.

Well I kinda think that I'm a 2.

I really don't think that I'm important.

Edit: Besides being overly prententious, was it a good review?

Well it's not saying that you think you are really important, that's egotistical, it's saying you think the album is important and all that. But yes, I would classify it under the ostentatious category. Being pretentious is fine with me because I do it all the time, but a lot of people here will rip you out for it. But yes, it was a well written review, I enjoyed it because I know exactly what you mean most of the time.
