Review Summary: My favorite album... Ever.
Sublime is a very unique band; they blend styles of punk, rap, reggae,
house, and many other styles of music. The diversity of the band is
what really separates them from all the other bands out there. This is
what makes Sublime the needle in the haystack for the punk/ska style
of music.
The album begins with a very rhythmic song called "Waiting for My
Ruca" it is kind of a slower paced song, the drum and bass on this
particular track stick out and are very memorable. "Waiting for My
Ruca" starts this album off great, it isn't exactly their best song
ever but it serves its purpose to keep you listening, the only problem
is the length of the song, its not that long but it does drag a little
towards the end of it.
The next two tracks on the album are flowing fluently with greatness,
"Smoke to Joints" is a very standout kind of reminiscent of Bob
Marley, like a lot of the music featured on the album. "40 Oz. To
Freedom" was one of the singles off the album and by far one of my
favorites next to "Lets Go Get Stoned". "Let's go get Stoned" is the
most mellow song on the album, it all just seems so natural. This
album contains some of the best chill tracks of all time. The heaviest
song on the album is "New Thrash", which has a real old school punk
feel to it, if your looking for heaviness though this CD really isn't
for you.
The Diversity on "Sublime" is amazing. They pull influences from
hip-hop, ska, reggae, and punk, blending them all to form a
masterpiece. Sublime has a great rhythm section and a great deal of
talent in the solo sections. There isn't one song on the album that
isn't really catchy, whether it's slow and simple or fast and
aggressive they find a way to make it catchy every time.
A lot of the songs featured here are covers, such as "Smoke Two
Joints", "We're Only Gonna Die for Our Arrogance", and "Ball and
Chain" among others. The band has good flow and great story telling in
their lyrics, with songs starting out with "Stolen from and African
land, chased out with a knife. With a face like Bob Marley and a mouth
like a motorbike", to stories about karma and people going back to
their bad addictive ways. With a total of 22 tracks some may expect
the album to drag a little at some point, but it doesn't slow down for
a moment this album will keep you entertained the whole way through,
this is one of the few albums that can be listened to start to finish
every sitting without a dull moment.
It's hard to choose which half is best. They both have many great
things about them, the first half is a bit catchier than the second
half, but the second half has the best rhythm on the album apart from
"Waiting for my Ruca". But overall I recommend this album to pretty
much anyone; fans of music in general can find something they like on
this album as long as they embrace it. I give this a 5 out of 5; this
in my opinion is the perfect album....
