Review Summary: Once you look past the goof ups, Storm and Destiny, this is one of Lennys better albums. I would even say it's a good album and a step in the right direction for Lenny. It's got four stand out songs in there. Thats good for anybody anywhere. A very solid
This album was one of Lenny better ones. It has some great songs, and a couple that leave you scratching your head, but for the most part it is a good album.
1.)Minister of Rock 'N Roll.
This is a nice start to the album. At first there is a strange intro to the song but once it takes off, it is a solid tune. I wouldn't quite call it rock 'n roll though. Almost rock 'n roll is more like it. The lyric is stating that well Lenny is the minister of rock 'n roll, and for the most part he is. It's a good start to the record. (3.0)
2.)I Don't Want to Be a Star.
The second song has a mournful soul to it. The lyric talks about regrets, and other aspects of life. The drum and guitar patterns go together very well here. However Lenny voice in this song is a bit "whiny". But it's not bad. A nice tune, but thats about it. (3.0)
3.)Lady
Now the album starts to come to life a bit. Who would think that such a simple beat could be so catchy? Not me, but it is. The lyric is obviously about a lady Lenny thinks is hot stuff (how many times has he done this?). Everything in this song, guitar, bass, piano, drums, vocals, they all just work together wonderfuly here. This is a great rock song. (4.0)
4.)Calling All Angels
The album slows down here a lot. This song is very slow with heavy reliance on Lennys vocal, and well it's O.K. during the verse. But once the chours comes his voice sounds much better. This is just another nice tune unfortunately. At this point you start to think the album is lackluster. (2.5)
5.)California
When you hear this song you think "Yes this is more like it". A very uptempo song with great line from all of the instruments. Good vocals, a great guitar solo, and Lenny singing well within his range. Not at his highest where his voice starts to get whiny. This song gets the record back on track after a O.K. fourth song. It is a bit short though. (4.0)
6.)Sistamamalover
This song will be hit or miss for many people. For me it's not bad, but i dont love it either. It's sounds to much like R&B, and soul mixed together. The guitar during the chours it cool though, along with the solo. But when are Lennys guitar riffs bad? Hardly ever. It's the guitar that saves this song from being bad. (2.5)
7.)Where Are We Runnin'?
Yeah heres a wonderful song. Upbeat, solid lyrics, and a wounderful guitar line. Where has this been the whole time? The lyric is about lifes crazyness. Or so i think. Hence "Where Are We Runnin'". Lenny gives a solid vocal performance, and the guitar solo fits the pace of the song better than any of the other solos so far. A classic song. (5.0)
8.)Baptized
Unlike the other slow songs in this record. This one is great. It sounds like something you would here in church. For some people this may be a turn off, but this is a great song. The lyric sounds like it is a worship song. I could be wrong but the whole theme Baptized is from the bible so I think I am right. Lennys vocals stretch his range but his voice does not realy sound straned as it did in other songs. (4.0)
9.)Flash
This song will be another hit or miss for fans. For me it's O.K. I've herd worse (there is worse coming up later in the record). The guitar and drums sound great, but things start to go wrong after that. This realy annoying saxiphone randomly pops up during the song. No no no that does not belong there Lenny! This is supposed to be a rock song not soul!
Just O.K. for me. (2.5)
10.)What did I do with my life?
Here is another soft song that just makes you want to go to sleep. Sorry Lenny this is getting old. Once again the lyric is a bit depressing and mournful. After the first half of the song it picks up and gets better though. Sadly though just another painfully boring song, well the first half anyway. There is the saxiphone here again but it fits much better than in Flash. (2.5)
11.)Storm
Lenny what the hell. Your not a rapper. This song has a guest apperance by Jay-Z. This song really bugs the crap out of me though. Rap just does not belong on your albums Lenny! Rap sucks dude. Get back to Rock 'N Roll Lenny. When you listen to the lyric it has a good message to it, but gosh this song just sucks. (1.5)
12.)The Other Side
By now you will be getting tired of these slow songs, and well here is another one. Guess what, it's depressing again! Yeah! O.K. for real this isn't a terrible song just very mediocre again. By now your ready to go back to the begging of the CD. Well you should. Very very average song for Lenny. (2.5)
13.)Destiny
No no no no no! Why did Lenny put this on the record. It's just him singing (very badly) about his destiny. We don't care! This song, if you can call it that, sucks. A terrible way to end the album. (0.5)
Overall this is a good album. One of Lennys better ones for sure. Lenny has never had a problum cranking out good songs, but he has had a problum cranking out good records. But this one is a good start towards fixing that.
