KoRn - "Follow the Leader"

This is my first review and I decided to pick a classic album that hasn't been reviewed on the list. Follow the Leader was the album that made KoRn really big in the 90's. Even though Life Is Peachy is the better album for its sense of humour, Follow the Leader is definitely a good classic 90's Metal album. It may have lead to more posers in the music industry (example: Fred Durst), but what matters is that it's one of those solid, influential must buys for anyone who likes the new Metal from the 90's to today. I'm mostly into Metal and Rap/Rock type music and this particular album knows how to hit both directions, even though KoRn don't have many Rap/Metal collaborations.

Tracklisting:

01-12. (Silence)
The album starts with twelve tracks of silence, each one lasting 5 seconds. I don't know why KoRn did this, but I think thirteen was KoRn's lucky number at the time, even though it's suppose to be an unlucky number.

13. It's On!
A good opener and an excellent song to headbang to. You'd be glad that you got something cool to listen to after those twelve tracks of silence.

14. Freak On A Leash
Everyone who knows KoRn has heard this song. Both the guitar and the vocals become more freaky.

15. Got the Life
The only other hit KoRn had on this album. A Metal song that still jumps the gun like the two tracks before it.

16. Dead Bodies Everywhere
It's no surprise that the lead singer, Johnathan Davis, sings about his own life. He's had a pretty miserable life, but he still knows how to write some interesting Metal lyrics.

17. Children of the KoRn
A collaboration KoRn did with Ice Cube. Makes you think about how the music industry influences people.

18. B.B.K.
A pretty nonsensical song, but the music is great work.

19. Pretty
A song about one of those personal issues that are hard to come by. Will leave you crying through the whole track.

20. All in the Family
Johnathan Davis and Fred Durst show their friendship by dissing each other. This is a good song for the lovers and the haters of KoRn and Limp Bizkit.

21. Reclaim My Place
"Wtf?" is probably what will go in your mind when you hear this track.

22. Justin
This song was made for a child in the Children's Wish Foundation who wished for KoRn and kept them in the hospital for months. Definitely a kick-ass Metal song with the weirdest guitar.

23. Seed
Another headbanger and it's not bad for the longest song on the album.

24. Cameltosis
Never heard of Pharcyde, but this Rap/Metal sex song is the album's strangest track.

25. My Gift To You
An okay way to end this classic album off. Really shows Johnathan Davis' experience with the bagpipes.

Secret Song: Earache My Eye
This secret song starts with a skit that Cheech and Chong do. Then they sing with KoRn and it's hilarious.

Overall album rating (on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best): 9

I at one time had this album until i realized that KoRn was the epitome of trash. I eventually GAVE the cd to a random Pac-Sun worker and he said "But... I'ts KoRn?" but then eventually he took it.

Their ex guitar player's interview in Guitar World is simultaneously creepy, and annoying.

Mediocre review (a little short on details, eh?) and a mediocre band.

Something vague: I agree. Head has been pretty creepy since he gave himself to god.

I think people are being too hard on the band. They aren't the best ever, but they have been around for a good length of time and have influenced alot of musicians (just look at how popular seven-string guitars became after Korn because popular.)

^ The thing that got me in the interview, though, was that he hardly discussed music at all. He looks like a possessed Jesus now.

I've never liked Korn, or seven-string guitars...

You have to have respect for this album even if you dont enjoy it (personally i love it!), cause they tried somthing new with the rap-metal songs like Children of the KoRn. No other metal bands do that so at leaste korn is trying somthing new. 4/5

I agree Kyle. Even though this album lead KoRn to a couple of bad albums (Issues and Untouchables), Follow the Leader was brilliant.

Follow The Leader is a fantastic album. Not as good as Korn, but still a real and fair representation of Korn's sound and style.

Wow, this review is bad. He had more info on the silence of the first twelve tracks than any of the other actual songs.

Actually, the reason for the 48 seconds of silence was because they wanted to express a moent of silence for some close friend and Roadrunner Record's death.

This is a bad review though :/

This album was okay, some great tracks and some not so good ones. WTF is up with everyone loving Got The Life? It sucks. KoRn aren't really sellouts, since they invented the genre... okay album, okay review.

"The album begins on track 13, following 12 tracks of silence. The reason, as mentioned in an interview with Metal Hammer UK around the time of release, was that Jonathan Davis did not like the fact that the album would have ended on the thirteenth track (due to superstition), so they preferred to start that album on that track instead. An alternate explanation for the reason the song started on the 13 track is that the first 12 tracks were 5 seconds of silence each adding up to one minute of silence in honor of Justin, a young fan of the band that died of cancer. Justin also has a song on the CD named after him."

Just thought I'd leave this here...
