Elva was Unwritten Law's mainstream breakthrough. It's first single, "Seein' Red" was a major hit. It had been 4 years since Unwritten Law's last album. This was the last album that Unwritten Law had on Interscope Records, but it was their best.
Unwritten Law:
Scott Russo - Vocals
Steve Morris - Guitar
Rob Brewer - Guitar (Was removed from the band in April 2005)
Pat Kim (PK) - Bass
Wade Youman - Drums (Was removed from the band in 2003)
The songs Nick & Phil, Raleigh Pt. V, and Raleigh Pt. VI are skits so I did not review them.
Mean Girl:
A great opening track. It's very fast and uses a lot of computer effects. One of my favorites on the album. 10/10
Up All Night:
This was the 2nd single. It is very fast like Mean Girl and has a chorus that'll always make you sing along. One of the best on the album. 10/10
Sound Siren:
Another amazing song. According to Scott, this is his favorite song that he has written. This song has a great ending. This is once again a great highlite on the album. 10/10
How You Feel:
The verses in this song are acoustic and have a very tropical feel and then it builds up into an electric chorus. It's a very fun song and is once again a highlite on the album. 10/10
Blame It On Me:
This is one of my favorite Unwritten Law songs of all time. It has a very fast verse and slightly slows down for the chorus. The acoustic version of this song sounds really good also. Another great song. 10/10
Seein' Red:
This was the first single. It's one of the slower songs on the album. Even though it was overplayed it is still a great song, but it doesn't match to the first 5 songs. 9/10
Hellborn:
In my opinion this sorta sounds like a Jane's Addiction song. Very fast and upbeat and the ending is definently the best part of the song. Another great song. 9.5/10
Geronimo:
This song starts off much like "Seein' Red." The verses start slow and build up to a very emotional and fast chorus. The rest of the song follows the fast, upbeat feel after the 3rd chorus. This is my 2nd favorite song on the album, and is one of the standout tracks. 10/10
Rescue Me:
This song starts out with symbols and then goes into an awesome guitar riff. The verses and chorus sound very cool on this song. One of the best songs. 10/10
Actress, Model...:
This song is more poppy than all of the other songs but it's really catchy. It's not as good as the fast, fun, or emotional songs, but it's still great. 9/10
Babalon:
This song has a great guitar riff on the intro. The verse is a little messy, but the chorus is great. This song would have been better on "Here's to the Mourning" but it's still an awesome song. 10/10
Rest of My Life:
This song is a kind of upbeat acoustic/electric song. The idea of mixing the electric with the acoustic was great and they pulled it off amazingly. One of my favorite songs on the album. 10/10
Elva:
This has a very strange guitar riff, but it really fits the song. It starts off slow and gets faster in the chorus. But the part of the song that got me was the riff, it really goes well with one of the best songs on the album. 10/10
Evolution:
This song starts off with some weird guy introducing Unwritten Law and he makes random appearences in the song. This song is fast, then slow, then fast, and so on. The chorus is really cool on this one. At the end there is an answering machine message on Scott's phone from a friend singing Up All Night. It's pretty funny. This is my favorite song on the album and it's a perfect way to end a perfect album. 10/10
This album had very few flaws, so I'm giving it a 10/10. If you get this album listen to it a lot because it takes time to grow on you. This is a great album and everyone should have it.
