This cd personally wasnt there best. I thouhg alot of songs sounded alot alike. just with diffrent words and all(like most songs should be, hee hee) and well alot of the lyrics were very poetic(as you said) then yea alot was very hard to fallow(the way they over laped and all that stuff)
Well ill just give a quick review of the songs:

Strength Through Wounding-Well since iv heard "Sing The Sorrow" id say this one sounds sorta of like the first song on that. Its ok but sorta boring.

Porphyria Cutanea Tarda-This song was ok. Id personaly say not the best way to start the album. It was pretty catchy. I liked the 2 vocals with it.

Exsanguination-I loved the bass line to start it!!! Then it sorta of only started there. It was really good with the lyrics. The bass is great, what can i say.

Malleus Maleficarum-Didnt have the best start. So it was a bit boring for the first liek 45 seconds or so. Then it picked up once it got to the verse then it went real good. Had some pretty good drumming.

Narrative of Soul Against Soul-Just a typical song. Not alot too special. Had an ok chours. Thats about it.

Clove Smoke Catharsis-Starts off real good. Its kind of one of the 'slow' songs but picks up a tad. But a good one! Real good lyrics to it. One of my favorite songs.

The Prayer Position-Had a real nice guitar riff to it. Got a bit boring. But it was all and all an ok song.

No Poetic Device-An average song. But really good bass line to it. Thats about all.

The Last Kiss-Has a pretty good bass riff. But the drums sound the same as alot of the songs. But has like a really good chours.

Weathered Tome-Has a really cool bass start. Then its a really good punk song.

At a Glance-A catchy guitar start. Then just goes like alot of there songs(like the drums and vocals the same). But it had really good lyrics.

God Called In Sick Today-My favorite song on the album. It was really good. The bass is good and the guitar is very like catchy and sounds good BUT the drums sound the same pretty much. The lyrics are so awsome.

(Hidden Song at the End, but a long wait to get to it)
Midnight Sun-A pretty good song. One of the best. Has really cool lyrics. But sorta sounds like some of the other songs. Then again it has its original parts(like the verses)

All in all id give it a 4/5

*sigh* this isn't 'The Art of Drowning' album... it's black sails in the Sunset... still a good album though.

You gave it a 4/5 and you didn't really like it?

I'd give this a 3.5 out of 5. I really like it, but it's hardly a classic.

can you be illegally retarded?

I've never listened to AFI. I heard that Leaving Song Pt. 2 or whatever on the radio, and I didn't like it. Is that what all their stuff sounds like?

No, not at all. Pick up Black Sails In The Sunset... I really like that album.

But first, read my review of Kind Of Blue, get it, and comments. I can send it to you over AIM if you like.

It's funny because those are my two least favourite AFI CDs... I like 'em all but those two... meh. The Art of Drowning is my fav followed by Black Sails in the Sunset... there best release was the All Hallows EP: Fall Children, The Boy Who Destroyed the World and Totalimmortal are their 3 best songs.

Overview
Probably my favourite AFI album of them all. It offers great vocals, though many can find Davey to be annoying but personally I love it. Instrumentally, it's nothing special but nothing to dislike about it. It's not like the average 'punk' album, offering much more than the usual fast drum beat and simple guitar riffs. The sound ranges throughout the album and progresses into a perfect ending with God Called In Sick Today, a slow 'ballad'.

What I Liked?
I liked a lot on this album, but the lyrics are great... I love them as well as the singing and just how the entire sound falls together perfectly. It's nothing special like I said before, but it all fits wonderfully.

What I didn't Like?
The drumming seems to have nearly the same beat throughout the entire album which can get a bit annoying but I don't concentrate too much on the drumming.

Favourite Songs
Malleus Maleficarum, The Last Kiss and God Called In Sick Today

Rating
4 - 4.5/5 - I loved it, personally and any true AFI should love this album.

liked review mainly, but no mention of bass
The album is great but it does have a samey sound throughout which is why god called in sick today is such a good song becos it stands out on the album(plus it rox)
This album is the turning point for afi, from here on the albuma are worth listenin to, most of the stuff b4 isnt really that special it just builds into wot they are from here onwords.
Fav songs: Malleus maleficarum, clove smoke catharis, god called in sick today, the prayer position.
Wud giv album 4/5, not the best from them but worth every penny
Would recommmend every album from BSITS onwards.

hmmm, i actually prefer Art of Drowning to this one, AoD takes this album a step further with range from furiouse hardcore/punk songs to power-alternative rock, but regardless this is a good album. Personally I think AFI are an interesting band because you can definately notice an evolution in music throughout the albums, I enjoy the first two because they are really loud, fast angry and punky, the third is afi's sound meeting with a heavier, more gothic sound, this album sees them bring back more speed and aggresion and also a hint at more technical guitar work, AoD takes Black Sails a step further just perfecting... as for StS..... while not a total attrocity its a bit of a stab in the back for long time AFi fans, cos we all know deep down that they are never going to make albums as good as these now that they have become this techno-synth-pop-goth rock hybrid band. I guess StS isnt band, its just a shame to see a good band fall into the commercial snare-trap, oh well thats my opinion anyways.

Commercial snare trap!! wot sorry but thats totally unfair on the badn. They're evolving their music changing and improving (to me at least) the new album is completely unique I call it dark edge, and it shows they're not afraid to experiment with their sound and create ultimately more sophistacted music, with greater depth. And they're on mtv!! OMG somebody shoot them, more ppl can hear their music and appreciate a maturing and improving band.

AFI is one of the best bands to ever play punky rock, or they were at least. I totally agree with meeeee, they have really lost they're touch with Sing the Sorrow, but hell, enough singing the sorry(teehee) their old stuff is amazing. The Art of Drowning and Answer that and Stay Fashionable happen to be better than Black Sails, but thats just my opinion. Overall it's a good album decent compared to their other stuff but deffinately not a waste of money.

Best songs I would have to say...The weathered tome, Exsanguination, and No Poetic Device.

Woohoo, I've been reading from here for forever and when I saw this I thought it was time to join, but this isn't the place for this....
