Release Date: 2001 | Tracklist

Like most i was lured to this album by Clint Eastwood. i was always into old school rap and i found the current state of garage and hip hop rubbish at the time. In Clint Eastwood, Gorillaz had combined old school Hip-Hop with a top notch bass line and chorus. I bought the album nd on first listen i was disapponted, it was somewhere between not enough rocking and not enough hip hop for my liking. However, on further listens i warmed to the album and it was my favourite of 2001.

Re-Hash
A perfect opener with a sweet acoustic intro and a song that was made to be dubbed. The vocal backing is genius and is a really uplifting song. The sitar in the middle of the song is a stroke of insperation and the scratch fill that brings back the song is amazing, real old school. 4.5/5

5/4
Another favourite of mine. With the punky guitar intro and the thumping drum providing the backbone of the song and the quirky lyric of, 'she turned my dad on.' making it stand out.The introduction of the electronnic instrutments is a good touch as well. 4/5

Tomorrow Comes Today
The first release from the band. A thunderous drum beat, begging for another dub. Damen's voice sounds like he just woken up with a hangover and fit the song perfectly. Has a good Harmonica solo. Little too downbeat for my liking.
3/5

New Genious
A song with great scratching and i like the inclusion of the churhc bell, but ultimately there was somehting about the song i just didnt like. Seems misplaced. 2/5

Clint EastWood
A really good song with some excellent rapping from Del the Funky Homosapian, the rapping really makes the song for me and the whispered bit at the end of the second verso leading to the second chorus with the mixing is a stroke of class. 4/5

Man Research
A favourite of mine. the lyrics make hardly any sense but the repeated yes bit is so good. Damen's voice shines on this song and the vocal overlapping is really good. 4/5

Punk
My favourite song on the album for such a long time. A mad, all out thrash and makes me feel good. this song got me into old school/scum punk and for that it deserves a five.5/5

Sound Check
This song acts as a tranquilizer for the mad rush that punk provides. a really good song that calms you down. the overlapping vocal section towards the end is amazing and the scratching throughout fits in perfectly.
4/5

Double Bass
A really good instrutmental with some interesting sounds and bouncy type noises, i like the spoken bit in the middle but i can easily skip this track. 3/5

Rock the House
The old school hip hop that i had been craving! Brass instrutments, siging bout dancing, and losts of 'da's. perfect! althoguh maybe a touch repetitive. 4/5

19-2000
A really good pop song with odd lrics but i killer vocal hook, 'get the cool shoe shine'. lovely. tad repetitve though. 3/5

Latin Simone
Worst track on the album for me, just strikes me as being awfully drab. 2/5

Starshine
A touch depressing but has a really good guitar line and Damen's weedy voice suits it, i normally skip this and Latin Simone.2/5

Slow Country
Another one of my favourites with a great steel drum like intro on the keyboard and the backing singing rocks. the synthisizer in the middle of the song is the part that i hum all day. A great reggea/indie song
4/5

M1A1
A hidden punk gem when you get past the movie sample. A great finisher as it makes the album go out with a bang. love this track. 4/5

This album is one of the best debuts i have heard, with enough diversity to make me count down the days to demon days. Out of the two i reckon this is the best, although time will tell.

Yeah it's good, but a little to repetitive for me, I'm gonna go dig it up and have another listen as I haven't for a while.
Nice review though.

I got this album then lost it the next day. I was kind've hooked to them right after the Clinteastwood music video hit MTV, after that I waited untill the release and got my hands on it as quickly as possible. Luck has it that I have to goto my grandmas and I lost it there somewhere. ( I thought ) Then a few days ago I found it in a box. Scratched the hell up. So I did my best copying it onto my computer and burning it. Successfully to full quality So, alot of the songs on the cd suck in my opinion.

I haven't thought about this cd in a long time. Nice review, but it could be a little more detailed. Great cd.

You forgot to review the last two song "Dracula" and "Left Hand Suzuki Method" other than that, good job. Was I the only one who caught that?

Meh I think this album is overated. There are some really well done tracks but the Gorillaz seem to have no energy and the music seems kind of gimmicky. I don't know that's probably just me.

This a good, solid album. Some of the tracks are a little boring and seem like filler, but the better tracks make up for that well enough. I wish my copy wasn't scratched up.

Del is so much better than the new guy. This Message Edited On 12.18.05

I wouldnt really call them a hip hop based band, but there are songs with hip hop in it.

I'd say they're mello rap rock that uses a lot of hip-hop artists in their songs.

They could qualify for trip hop, since they have rock/dub/electronica/reggae/hip hop/r&b influences. They are pretty poppy these days, though.

I would classify this as hip-hop because that's the general sound of the album.

I listened to this at a friends house a few weeks ago and didn't like it at all. Nothing really stood out and the songs ran together so bad that it sounded like one whole song and not a seperate album.

I thoroughly enjoy every song on the album, especially Man Research and Sound Check. Starshine is great, too.
