Children Of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll
Spinefarm Records 2003
Line-up:
Alexi Laiho - Vocals, Lead Guitar
Jaska W. Raatikainen - Drums
Henkka T. Blacksmith - Bass
Janne Warman - Keyboards
Alexander Kuoppala - Rhythm Guitar (only the record, left just after the recording of the album)
Roope Latvala - Rhythm Guitar (brought in after Alexander left for touring )

Its quite hard at times to describe Bodom’s sound at times, because they have a mix of styles in their sound. There’s Speed Metal, Thrash Metal, Power Metal, Plain Old Metal, Neo-Classical (if you don’t know what this is, try some Yngwie Malmsteen), Death Metal, and Black Metal. But most of the time they’re billed as a Melodic Death Metal band, but don’t be fooled as they are more than just melodic, with brutal crushing riffs, technical keyboard melodies and solos (yes keyboard solos!), scorching guitar solos and at times both keyboard and guitar duelling solos. Speaking of the keyboards, other than just supplying an accompaniment to the music or background melodies, its high in the mix and in every song there’s a keyboard solo to show off Janne’s technical ability. Alexi Laiho is one of a new breed of guitar heroes for today’s generation of metal fans. Its easy to see his influences of Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Randy Rhoads, Mozart and Bach in his playing.

Hate Crew Deathroll is their 4th studio Album, and in fairness, its also their best. Its more raw, more heavier but also more melodic at times. All the band members put in their best performances on record to date. With songs like Needled 24/7, Chokehold (Cocked ‘n’ Loaded) and Sixpounder (check out the intro riff, very reminiscent of Pantera - A New Level) the band shows off their heavier more brutal side, but with a song like Angels Don’t Kill, its still heavy but its also very melodic , especially with the keyboards leading it along at various times throughout the song. Alexi’s vocals have never been a strongpoint for COB, but on this album, they are the best his vocals have ever been, the years of touring have certainly helped improve his voice. Alexi’s leads are in a way more simple sounding than earlier efforts but that doesn’t make them any less exciting, his fancy fretwork is laced all throughout the album. Janne’s fancy finger work on the keyboards are also laced throughout the album but not just solos but his playing also adds atmosphere, depth and also darkness at times on the songs. The drumming is solid and does its job supporting everything else that’s going on with the keyboards and guitars. The song titles are a bit silly, what kind of names are Triple Corpse Hammerblow or Lil’ Bloodred Ridin’ Hood, silly names aside it doesn’t affect the quality of the songs as the production is slick and well mixed. The only thing for me that brings Bodom albums down, is the playing time as they only average 35mins in length, I wish they’d make them a bit longer.

Try: Needled 24/7, Angels Don’t Kill, Chokehold (Cocked ‘n’ Loaded)

You only know 5 star albums, do you? Please read the definition of the various ratings for reviews following this link: http://www.musicianforums.com/sputnik/guidelines.php

And especially when you rate an album 5 stars, there must be more detail in the review why it deserves the rating in the first place

Ok, HCDR is not their best album, and no one should suffer from that delusion. In my opinion, the best songs on the album (Needled 24/7, Sixpounder, Triple Corpse Hammerblow) do not even amount to the worst songs on Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper. I think this record sounds like Bodom selling out, but i'm gonna stop ranting now.

This is a great album, but I don't think it deserves 5 stars. 4 stars seems to be more accurate.

My favorite song off of here is Bodom Beach Terror by far.

I think that this is the worst CoB album. It is not as melodic as the previous ones. Sorry to say that. It doesn't deserved even 3 stars. I liked CoB because they mixed innovative melodic parts with fast and agressive motives. My favourite albums are "Follow the Reaper" and "Hatebreeder". In this album, as well as the new EP, they are more heavy, without ANY interesting melody. Soon, they will disappear if they continue like this

Very good album. CoB is one of my favorite bands and this is no exception. It's definitely not 5 stars - probably 4 - since here they changed from a very power metalish style with all lead guitar to a more straightforward metal with heavy riffs.

Call me crazy, but I think all 3 albums before have an edge over this.

guitars, keyboards, bass, drums-speed, melody, agression, power, technicality, musical virtuoso, orchestration-this band has it all.
now the lyrics are a different matter.

this band are great. they are sooooo talented, especially the way the keyboard and guitar work together to give such a powerful effect.

5/5

I hate their singer. Laiho is the only one that really interests me that much.

I am so reviewing this soon. No offense to the other reviewers, but I need to make my sputnik Bodom collection complete. Follow the Reaper will come first though.

An amazing album! There is not one filler track on this, and each song has its own feel and vibe. COB even tried the slow ballad, which turned out really well. Drumming and guitar are top notch.

Better Laiho than some cookie monster ooogoo boogoo singer. This Message Edited On 09.10.05This Message Edited On 09.10.05

Follow the Reaper and HCDR are both decent, I listened to mainly the best tracks though so call me cheating =p. Sixpounder is awesome, as is Needled 24/7, but I reckon this is not as good as Follow the Reaper with it's guitar/keyboard solo duels eg Mask of Sanity & Follow the Reaper. Also btw RikCOB Laiho and Janne both went to the same Jazz & Pop Conservatorium in Finalnd, Laiho plays keyboard/piano too, and composes all the songs - including the keyboard solos, and as Janne dropped outta the Conservatorium he never actually perfected his classical techniques as he should have, so when Alexi gave him the sheet for Mask of Sanity, Janne read it and was surprised at how Alexi composed it, and still has difficulty playing it, although you could say he's sussed it now =D. Janne is an awesome Keyboardist and Laiho's an awesome guitarist, now get on your knees and bow down to them! "WE'RE NOT WORTHY!!!" :P btw you hear Alexi quit the band :O
