The Offspring - The Offspring
Nemesis Records
1989

Dexter Holland - Vocals
Greg K - Bass, Backing Vocals
Noodles - Guitar, Backing Vocals
Ron Welty - Drums

After Dexter and Greg deciding at a party to start up a band back in 1985, recruiting Noodles to play guitar, and having lost a drummer, they released a stunning debut album.

This album was originally released in 1989 on vinyl, but since then bootleggers have been ripping the album onto CDs and selling them. The Offspring decided to re-release their debut album under Dexter's own Nitro Records in 1995, and without the final song, "Kill The President".

As soon as you play the first track, you are immediately enticed by the music and the vocals. It's just a shame the album clocks in at a small 30 minutes or so, and couldn't be longer. The songs have strong messages throughout them. "Elders" is about being lied to by our elders and "Tehran" (originally titled "Baghdad") is describing war in Iran and how if you were to be fighting there, you'd be shown no mercy.

When you listen to this amazing album, you can hear the emotion in Dexter's voice in a few songs, such as "I'll Be Waiting" and "Crossroads", showing us that these lyrics mean something to him.

Recommended Tracks:
Elders
Out On Patrol
Beheaded
I'll Be Waiting

This is one hell of a debut album, and things have certainly improved since this album. I give this a 4.5/5

This punky, quick paced energy filled brigade of an album might just be the fix you need, to satisfy...

i love the whole album, so if i wanted to put ALL of my favourite songs in the recommended part, then i'd name all songs on the album.

and you are right, jennifer lost the war is a great song. :thumb:

I would have went into a "track-by-track" analysis, but I tried that on my "Ixnay On The Hombre" and it didn't work out very well.

I went back and got this album after I had gotten every other one besides Splinter, because it wasn't out yet. But I was very surprised at how much different it was from Smash and the newer ones. Ignition sounded different too, but it was even different than that. At first, I thought it sounded like crap, but after you listen to it, it is really good. It's not the music that sounds bad, I think it's the production of the cd. And I actually have one that has "Kill The President" on it. All of the cd is good, especially "I'll Be Waiting," "Beheaded," and "Jennifer Lost The War." And Dexter still had long hair then, which was cool. And it's nice to see that they are still around today, and they don't suck. And they haven't really done anything new to their music, but still remain awesome. Kind of like The Misfits, they haven't done anything new, and they still rock. If there was someone that was going to get this cd after gearing a lot of the newer stuff, I would say that you just need to be ready for a more "raw" sound. Good album.

Kill The President should have been a recommended song. The intro and guitar solo are just plain awesome.

It's only on the vinyl release, so I wasn't sure if I should recommend it or not.

Just to Clarify, The song Kill The President wasn't taken off for the 95 release. It was taken off after the September 11th attacks. If you have it on your Cd, it just means you have one that was released previous to the attacks.

My favourite track of this cd is definately jennifer lost the war, but the other tracks are still good though. Pretty good album but the sound is kinda gritty if you know what i mean, but most debuts are like that.

I've never heard kill the president, but I looked up the lyrics and they did not seem too offensive.
