The Ataris have established themselves as one of the premiere pop-punk acts out there today. Albums such as 'End is Forever' and 'Blue Skies, Broken Hearts.. Next 12 Exits' have given the band a huge reputation for writing honest and open pop-punk and Kris Roe is regarded by many as one of the best pop-punk lyricists there is. So Long, Astoria is the sixth release by The Ataris and unfortunetly the weakest. It's an album of a few good songs and alot of mediocre songs. Let's take a look.

So Long, Astoria - The first song on the album opens with distorded power chords before everything kicks in. It's an emotional song. Kris when writing the lyrics for this album went to his hometown and this song is a huge reflection of his childhood. The lyrics are great and it's a nice song.

Takeoffs and Landings - This is another pretty emotional song. It's a love song and something i'll give Kris for this album is throughout he is consistently good with his lyrics. The song however is nice but it's nothing great. There's no real catchy chorus and the verses are allright but just an ok song.

In This Diary - I shouldn't have to mention the lyrics for this song but they are great. This is a song of youth lost. The chorus for this song is great and really makes this song. It was the first single off this album and it turns out as one of the albums strongest.

My Reply - Very average song. The album at this point to starts to sound alot the same. There isn't much variation between the first two songs and this song. They really do sound the same. The chorus is ok otherwise the song is an amazingly bland song.

Unopened Letter to the World - 'If I died tommorow, would this song live on forever?' is the main lyric of this song and it's a great song. Unlike My Reply the verses sound unique and it is quite a good song. The lyrics of course are great and it turns up as quite a good song especially the end.

The Saddest Song - Here's an intresting song. Starts off very strangly before kicking into quite a powerful chorus. It sounds pretty unique and Kris extends his voice on this song. A weak chorus brings the song down. An above average song overall.

Summer '79 - At first I really liked this song but now it seems pretty bland. It's a nice reflection on Kris's past and well written. The chorus is good but it doesn't have any special X-Factor which means it's a song with a limited lifespan.

The Hero Dies in this One - The verse at the start might mislead you into thinking this is just another My Reply type song which at first it does a sound a bit like but then the chorus comes along and it's an exploding chorus. The lyrics are great and the bridge is undeniably the highlight of this song. A good song.

All You Can Ever Learn is what You Already Know - Award for longest song title I've come across goes to this song. It's got a good message and it's well written. Lacks a bit of X-Factor and sounds a bit bland but not a bad song.

The Boys Of Summer - Yes it's a cover but probably one of the best i've ever heard. The Atari's take this song and make it sound like their own. It's a standout song on the record and a great song. It's the second single off this album. It's a song many people are bound to love.

Radio #2 - Yawn. Booooooring. This song sounds a bit different to anything on the album but it seriously sucks. Kris's voice sounds very strained and the production sounds to trebbly here. Lyrics are pretty bland aswell. Give this song a skip.

Looking Back On Today - This is an aucostic song. I really can't get over the production. It's pretty nasty here but however it's a nice song. Good lyrics but with good production it could have been so much better :(

Eight Of Nine - The last song somewhat redeems the last two. It's a pretty good song and the verses are incredibly well written. The lyrics are of course well written here and this is one of the albums catchiest. One of the albums most emotional and a nice farewell to the album.

So overall a mediocre attempt at an album. Some very good songs and some pretty bad ones. Hopefully The Ataris take note of the albums critism and release something like Blue Skies or End Is Forever next time. This album is for The Ataris fan only. Not worth it's full price but maybe but it if it's on sale.

Rating: 2.75/5 :(

The Ataris' fourth LP is a nostalgia induced ride, but it's also filled with surprisingly meaningful...

so long astoria is all about the goonies, not kris's hometown. And looking back on today isn't acoustic on the cd, you must have a burned copy. The electric version thats on the actual CD is REALLY REALLY good you shold definetly check it out. Overall, I kinda agree with you though it gets old after a while :upset:

It could be an Australian/NZ version I have, sometimes bands change the songs. I'll download the electric version later on and put that in the review. Are you sure it's about the goonies? I was reading on their website that it's about his hometown.

yeah Im pretty sure. the town in the goonies was astoria, and kris is from anderson, indiana. Plus the outro of the song about pirate ships and when he says 'this is my wish' is a direct quote from the movie.

its true he's from anderson...i.e. "Anderson is cold tonight, the leaves are scattered on the ground." sure the album shows their age but it hink its their best album as a whole but Blue Skies still has the best songs...the acoustic version of looking back on today is from the Warped Tour 2001 Compilation, the elctric version kicks ***...sure So Long Astoria is pretty okay and takeoff and landings is alright but the rest of the album really picks up...in this diary is amazing, my reply is really good especially at the end with the harmony and roe singing "forgive me, i'm so sorry", unopened letter to the world is really good and shows the roe's powerful vocals, the saddest song is good but the acoustic hidden version at the end of the c.d. is amazing and its awesome to see them do it live acousitcally with a piano, summer '79 is catchy and great with an awesome chorus and yeah it fades out after awhile but its still a great song with cool effects in the second verse, the hero dies in this one is amazing the verse is good but the chorus is awesome and show not just roe lyrical and vocal power but how the whole band can go from a softer verse to a hard hitting chorus and make the transition work...the best part is when he screams "stay who you are", all you cvan ever learn is alright, boys of summer is good but loses its flair after awhile, radio #2 is fun and cool effects like its through an old radio at first and a great sequal to the radio still sucks, i won't spend another night alone (hidden ) is fantastic, and eight of nine is really good,....the acoutic version on Punk goes acoustic is even better...this is a fantastic album andi don't know why no one seems to realize that

"Radio #2" has to be one the the worst songs I have ever heard. I think The Ataris are just mad that they can't make it to the radio.

I bought this albumn not too terribly long after it came out, and it has since become one of my all-time favorites. How the hell can you say that it's a mediocre attempt. This was the albumn that got me hooled on the Ataris, and I don't go a day without listening to it. Every song was exceptionally written, and there are absolutely NO weak poinnts to be found. While a very experimental step as far as the music goes, it still rules!
Except for changing about 2 words, Don Henley's version of Boys of Summer and the Atari's sound almost exactly the same.
They don't sound the same at all. Listen to the guitar in both songs (for one, Ataris use two guitarists). Don Henley's version sounds more laid back in a way. The guitar is sort of soothing. The Ataris version is a bit harder and riffier (a word?). Definitely sounds different, but still a great homage to a great musician.

I've liked the Ataris since Blue Skies, Broken Hearts... and this album... I don't know. The electric version of "Looking Back on Today" ruins it. The acoustic Warped Tour (?) version was so much better. Decent tunes, though.

Of the four Ataris albums, (blue skys, so long astoria, End', and the re-released anywhere but here) so long astoria is the worst... the best being end'...
Radio #2 ia actually a VERY good song, so is looking back on today, which ISN"T acoustic on the actual C.D. There's also the two extra tracks, one is an acoustic version on Saddest song and one's a redone version of, I won't spend another night alone- from Blue skys. And if you look in the booklet, on the page with my reply, you see the letter that 'My reply is about.
It's a very pop-punk C.d, that Is nowhere near as good as the others, so if you didn't like it go fork out 25$ and buy any older ataris C.d, there way better I suggest End is forever.
So Long Astoria ~ 3.5/5
