Gwar is a very interesting group of people. Their name actually stands for "God what an awful racket". I personally love these guys, a lot of people think they just try to hard. I love that about them though. This album was their first attempt at a thrashy sound, they didn't really pull it off but still made a great album.
Track 1- Meat Sandwich (3:28)
A strange song from a strange band. It is about, well a meat sandwich. The song features a very strange intro but a catchy verse and chorus.
4/5
Track 2- The New Plagued (2:52)
One of their songs that come near a thrashy sound. The singer however just doens't have the right voice for it. The riffs are really heavy though, good song.
3/5
Track 3- Whargoul (5:36)
My favourite song off this album. Its about a zombie who comes back to life to reek havoc on the city of Stalingrad during World War 2. A very cool song, with some interesting lyrics. For example "They burned off my face with a propane torch, then they blew up my porch." This is the one song on the album that comes close to the thrashy sound they wanted.
5/5
Track 4- Rag Na Rok (3:58)
The title track, another good song. As you can tell from the title it deals with the theory of Ragnarok occuring. The song is nice and heavy. The guitars are fairly simple, but still a great song.
4.5/5
Track 5- Dirty, Filthy (2:29)
Another good song, this one is also a close to the trash sound. The singer's voice is quite annoying in the intro though. You can barely hear him. When i first heard it I thought he was saying "poopie". The lyrics are pretty entertaining though, and other than his voice being annoying sometimes its a good song.
3.5/5
Track 6- Stalin's Organ (2:19)
The title could be analyzed in 2 ways really, you could be vulgar or musical about it. Your choice really. The song has that deathmarch feel to it, the riffs are slow-paced with some high pitched lead overtop. A decent song.
3/5
Track 7- Kinfe in yer Guts (3:15)
Has that classic fade in intro. The guitar work is just fantastic on this song, nothing super fancy but its does sound nice. The bass is also great in this song, the drums however are a little hard to hear at times (or maybe I just can't hear them cause I'm retarded).
3/5
Track 8- Think you outta know this (2:46)
A slow intro, with a buildup to an erratic verse. The vocals are pretty bad on this song, I don't particularly enjoy this one.
2.5/5
Track 9- Nudged (2:39)
A nice intro, with a cool lead overtop of it. The song then progresses into a nice thrash feel, and the vocals are actually well suited. Like Whargoul, a great attempt at a thrash song.
5/5
Track 10- Fire in the Loins (3:58)
Features a Megadeth-esque intro, with a nice change into the verse. The drums are fantastic on this song. The vocals are actually shared along with a female singer (the name of whom I forget). Her most memorable line would be "Maybe I'll just chop off your d**k".
4.5/5
Track 11- Surf of Syn (4:21)
A really weird intro, the kind that if you were stoned you would be trippin' out. In fact the whole song continues that feel. The vocals are awesome on this song. They are really demonic sounding and are just fantastic. The bass sounds like a MIDI bass though and not a genuine bass.
4.5/5
Track 12- Crush, Kill, Destroy (1:33)
Wow, a great song. Has a nice drum riff in the very beginning, then cuts into a nice solo. Then maintains a really thrashy feel. In fact, they managed to pull it off with this one. However, it is rather short.
5/5
Track 13- None but the Brave (3:50)
A slower intro, with a jazzy drum intro. Then a rap attempt by the vocals. Then the guitars come in and it keeps a hard rock feel. A mediocre song.
3/5
Overall, a great album. It was the first album by GWAR that I ever herd. Its just great. I highly suggest you grab it. However, GWAR is like wine; it is an aquired taste really and takes some time to like some of the songs.
Overall: 3.5/5
