I love this album. It's not Gn'R or STP, don't expect or forget that it will be.
The Band:
Scott Weiland - Vocals
Slash - Lead Guitar
Dave Kushner - Rhythm Guitar
Duff McKagan - Bass
Matt Sorum - Drums
1. Sucker Train Blues - An excelent song to start off the album, and fast paced riff and an awesome voice really make this song. Scott Weilands lyrics are strange but sound awesome. "Somebody rape my tapeworm abortion." For the solo Slash uses a telecaster guitar and uses the whammy bar.
4/5
2. Do It For The Kids - "We're Too Fast and Out Of Luck And I Don't Even Give A F***!" Although this may sound lame it sounds awesome in context. Another fast paced song. It consists of a fairly simple riff and Slash playing lead over the top.
4/5
3. Big Maching - This is one of my favourite songs on the album. No real solo to speak of, more like long fills. An easy song to play on guitar but sounds really good.
5/5
4. Illegal I Song - Another one of my favourites, with a fast intro riff this song gets real good real fast. Dave Kushner plays around a little in this song for example plugging his guitar directly into the mixing desk bypassing the amp to get a different sound. The choruses in this song are fast but very melodic, Matt sorum really shines in this song I can't get enough of his drumming. I love the solo in this song, even though it's not very difficult it sounds really good and fits the song perfectly.
5/5
5. Spectacle - A fast paced song but at the same time very melodic. An awesome solo one of the best on the album, Slash improvised this solo and the first take was used on the album.
4/5
6. Fall To Pieces - Velvet Revolvers second single, and the first of three ballads on the album. I love this song and the video clip that goes with it. Lots of people thought this song was about love but its about drug use / abuse. This song uses slow melodic verses but a heavier chorus. Slash's solo is very melodic and beautiful.
5/5
7. Headspace - They are back to the fast paced songs now, avery cool riff, a powerful chorus, and an awesome solo makes this song one of the best yet!
4/5
8. Superhuman - The riff uses a technique that Slash used in "Sweet Child O' Mine," bassically he uses a recuring note during the riff, kinda hard to explain. Scott's vocals in this song are amazing, his lyrics are once again strange but sound incredible, "Keeping Her Face Packed With Cocaine." Like "Big Machine" there is no real solo to speak of, Slash plays around a bit during one of the verses and the interlude.
5/5
9. Set Me Free - One of the more "Poppy" songs on the album, some people might recognise this song from the movie "The Hulk." The first thing you notice about this song is the bass, its really cool, during the verses its just vocals and bass. The riff and solo in this song work perfectly with the rest. I believe the band (Pre-Scott) wrote the lyrics that's why they are structured differently.
3.5/5
10. You Got No Right - The second of three ballads on the album, the band use the same structure for this song, melodic verses but heavy / powerful choruses. This song is about being supressed by your significant other, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife, etc.
4/5
11. Slither - Velvet Revolver's first single on the album, an awesome song that uses a bass intro, while Dave Kushner plays around with some effects. I worked out how to get this particular sound email me if you want a list of effects. This song is powerful all the way through with strange lyrics that dont really make much sense. "Always Keep Me Under Finger Thats The Spot You Run To Me." A good solo, no where near the best on the album but good none the less.
5/5
12. Dirty Little Thing - Velvet Revolvers third and most recent single, released just a few weeks ago, a very good song. Both guitarists play fast chords during the intro but during the chorus slash starts during lead parts. A really good solo in this song fast and sounds really good.
4/5
13. Loving The Alien - The final ballad on the album, probably my favourite of the three ballads, the real meaning of this song is a little hard to grasp but it'ss still an excelent song, both guitarists play clean guitars during the verses, Dave plays chords while Slash plays around with various lead parts but during the chorus uses distortion to play the lead while Dave is still using a clean guitar. I love this solo SO MUCH! Very simple but is just awesome!
5/5
Overall a really good album, not as good as Gn'R but maybe equal to STP, haven't decided yet.
