Release Date: 2004 | Tracklist

After finding the tracklist for this CD and hearing TFSOP, I decided to hunt this record down! I found it and was not disappointed. After their last ground-breaking album "The Fake Sound Of Progress", the Welsh lads are back with their second album "Start Something." I have to say from hearing this two months before it's release it is a lot more melodic but the rock metal sound is still there!

01. START SOMETHING
This song is a cool intro song for the album. It starts off like any normal intro but then goes into a cool song. With heavy riffs but a punkish sound, it really works. The verses have screaming in the background which adds to the LP effect.

02. WE STILL KILL THE OLD WAY
The riff which made LP famous from "Fake Sound Of Progress" sounds like the intro to this song, nevertheless it's certainly one of the best on the album. It's verses are quite empty but build up. The chorus is quite slow but still has a heavy effect.

03. RIDE
Another song with a punk feel, but still has the metal vibe. This is a very fast song and shouldn't be skipped. The verses are upbeat and the chorus has a cool screaming part where he just shouts "RIDE RIDE RIDE" and it suits the song so well.

04. LAST TRAIN
Definatly one of my favourites. After hearing the BBC Radio 1 version I had to get it and the studio version doesn't disappoint. The slow verses are quite touching and the chorus is as well. A soppy love song, in a metal kinda way...

05. MAKE A MOVE
The intro put me off. How wrong I was. When you get into this song you realise it's really cool and the piano adds to a chilling effect. This is one of the best songs on the album and has a simple "Wake up, wake up, wake up" chorus.

06. BURN BURN
The first single off this CD and a fine choice. This song is one of my favourites with it's superb riff and great lyrics. The chorus where the band shout "BURN BURN" is a great addition and make the chorus that little bit better.

07. I DON'T KNOW
Getting into the slower but still cool songs, this is a pretty song. You can tell he put a lot into the song. There isn't much metal hammering in the song, just the chorus. But still it's a song which shouldn't be missed.

08. GOTHIC
I personally love the title of this song. It leads you into another slow but slightly heavier song. It does get heavy in the chorus but the lyrics are slow and meaningful. This is probably my second favourite song on the album.

09. TONIGHT
Almost an emo song, something I'd expect from ATDI and SDRA. But neverthe less it's a nice song to listen to after all the heaviness and power in the album. This isn't my favourite song, but I wouldn't skip.

10. A MILLION MILES
I like this song a lot. In between the boundries of heavy full on metal and good old fashoined rock. The verses are pretty cool going from quiet to loud, quiet to loud. This song shows the power LP can bring out but is still quite melodic compared to the first few tracks.

11. LAST SUMMER
Going back to the emo now, this again sounds like At The Drive In or Sunny Day Real Estate, but still shows what LP can do. Once again a song where the band put their whole heart into it, yet one showing their musical abilities.

12. WE ARE GODZILLA, YOU ARE JAPAN
I love this song. Really, I do. I love the riff, definatly the best guitar on the album in my opinion, maybe even the best song. This song is full on heavy metal with no strings attached. The verses are so catchy and so is the chorus with the intro riff. Like I said, I love the song and it should be heard by every LP fan.

13. LUCKY YOU
Can't complain about this song. It's in between emo and metal, an odd duo which you wouldn't see together normally. With that being said, I think this is one of those songs you could hold your lighters too and sway side to side.

14. SWAY
Hummm. I can see a pattern now. Heavy songs at start leading to the light songs at the end. But LP have done it well. They've managed to write a nice ballad song at the end for being such a heavy band.

15. INSTRUMENTAL
This starts out so slow and relaxed. But this is LP. It has to lead into something heavy!?! Not for about 2 minutes of this 5:46 song. Quite disappointing this instrumental. I was expecting more, but you can't have everything.

There are some flaws to this album. The endings of most songs lead into the others, but take about a minute. The album is very long (1 hour 5!?!) which puts me off it a lot, but I guess that's OK because the best songs on it last about 40 minutes. Well done Lostprophets, you've managed to make another great CD!

I give it 4 smiley faces (4/5) :D :D :D :D :(

I've been waiting for this CD to come out on release in NZ and finally got my chance the other day. I agree with your review quite alot and really don't like the outros slipping to intros much (Makes it harder to put songs on my mp3 player hehe) but it is a good album. I'm having a hard time on deciding between this and TFSOP. They both are great albums but I thought TFSOP was a bit more experimental anyway great to see the boys are back and I'm looking forward to seeing them live in January. Good review :thumb:

Beh, I personally think it's a terrible album. Their first one was way better.

While TFSOP pushed the boundries of rock/nu-metal and really had an experimental and unique sound to it this one looses that feel for a much more cleaner production sound. Now this isn't a bad thing but the Lost Prophets who once held the crown for pushing Nu-Metal forward are gone. With the slicker production and more melodic songs that could put you off but look past it. This album is incredible. The songs are beautiful and melodic in most instinces. So though this album lacks the experimental vibe it's still a very good album. 4.5/5.

Obviously this guy hasn't listened to the album. There are no bass or jazz solo's in this album and the tracklist is completely wrong. If the user had bothered reading the rules

2) FIRST SEARCH TO SEE IF A REVIEW HAS BEEN DONE (use the serach at the top). If a review has been done, find that thread, and make a new post underneath that thread

Then he wouldn't have posted this. Also there are 13 songs on the album.

I got the album the day it came out (2nd Feb 2004).
I'm quite confused with both reviews (ok i'm stupid) but;
cky2kendall_version2:
His review has 15 songs (theres only meant to be 13) and has the list wrong, its meant to be:

1. We Still Kill The Old Way
2. To Hell We Ride
3. Last Train Home
4. Make A Move
5. Burn Burn
6. I Don't Know
7. Hello Again
8. Goodbye Tonight
9. Start Something
10. A Million Miles
11. Last Summer
12. We Are Godzilla, You Are Japan
13. Sway...

While steven_james64:
Lostprophets aren't Pop-Punk, and of course has tracks mixed up, but he only did 12 tracks not 13, hes missing We Are Godzilla, You Are Japan

IMO i would actually give Start Something a 4.5/5, i may not have a review done, but it has more talented riffs then "The Fake Sound Of Progress" but it ain't as heavy, i prefer to hear turn tables then the keyboard, but some tracks in the "Start Something" album (example: Last Train Home) would be suited best with the keyboard, and "I Don't Know" has a solo in it, which is great. I would say "Start Something" is better then "The Fake Sound Of Progress" just by alittle. The "Start Something" album may have slightly added some punk related riffs/sound, but still a great album.

At the time that the other review was posted, it was a separate thread. It has since been combined into the one present. :thumb:

13 on the UK release (all except Lucky You)
14 on the Japan release (all tracks)

I saw a music video for one of their songs, and I didn't find anything particularly original or amazing in it. Hopefully they can do better.

Album Rating: 3.5

I got this CD a week ago, and I like it alot. Like mentioend before in this thread, the production is much more 'cleaner', and a more edgy tone would have done the album good at on or the other point. But it's great the way it is nonetheless.

There are a lot of things that I really like. The use of the keyboard to set certain accents to the songs is great. Not so over-used like it is with Nightwish IMO. Pretty hard songs are there as well as mellow rock songs, combined in a nice way. Tha bass playing is good, and they make good use of both guitars. Though that can be done better, like it is seen with Funeral for a Friend for instance. But still good. Overall a very well done album. The remark made earlier about the song Sway sounding like Blink182 is sheer nonesense to me.

Great songs: Start something, Last Summer, I don't know

Overall: a rock solid 4/5 for me. :thumb:

Brit Metal? Sorry man, these guys don't sound like Diamond Head, Priest or Angel Witch. These guys are second-rate nu-metal at best. James Hetfield is a fan of theirs though, oh well.

I've heard 3 songs from this album - Burn Burn and Last Train Home, which I can't stand, and We Are Godzilla, You Are Japan, which I really like. Based on that, and the fact that beyond Shinobi.. and the title track I didn't like the first album much, would I like this album, overall?
