First off you need to know that I’m reviewing the original version of this album, without the second disc, because I haven’t got the re-mastered version, so if someone could post a review of the second disc I’ll edit this review to include them. Any comments would be nice because this is my first review.
This album was released in 1985, just after the Powerslave album, and was the first widely available live album by Maiden (after Maiden Japan) It was recorded over 4 nights at the Long Beach Arena, Los Angeles. Whilst this album does not have the superb production of Rock In Rio, it has many songs that haven’t been played for years, so is very good in that sense. It features the classic line up of Steve Harris (Bass), Bruce Dickinson (Vocals), Dave Murray & Adrian Smith (Guitar), and Nicko McBrain (Drums). It also has possibly the best artwork for any Maiden album.
1.Aces High – Starts off with Churchill’s Speech, then kicks in with the riff, which seems a bit slower than the album version to me. Still very good, 4.5/5
2. 2 Minutes To Midnight – Bruce Dickinson’s voice seems slightly weak on this track, but picks up for the choruses, and the solos are great, so it’s a 4/5.
3. The Trooper – Fantastic intro, a strong vocal performance, but not for the choruses, but once more the solos are great, another 4.5/5
4. Revelations – Fantastic. Audience is involved, and everything else is amazing. Much better than the album version. 5/5
5. Flight Of Icarus – For some reason I love the intro, both with the guitars and Bruce’s voice, but it just lacks something, so it’s a 4/5.
6. Rime Of The Ancient Mariner – The highlight of the show? Quite possibly. Some songs that are 14 minutes long get boring, but not this. From the excellent intro with Bruce’s screaming, to the chilling middle poetry bit, through to the happy bit on bass, everything about this song is perfect. 5/5
7. Powerslave – Not quite as good as Rime… but close. After the opening bits, Bruce’s voice seems a bit flat, but that doesn’t spoil the song by much, so it’s a 5/5
8. The Number Of The Beast – Good, but I don’t think his scream at the beginning is as good as it could be, and the vocals seem dragged. Listen the song and you’ll see what I mean. Overall though it’s still a 4/5.
9. Hallowed be Thy Name – One of their best songs and they don’t disappoint. Whilst it doesn’t compare to the Rock In Rio version, it’s still very, very good. 4.5/5
10. Iron Maiden – I’ve never been a huge fan of this song, and this version doesn’t do a huge amount to change that. Only a 3.5/5
11. Run To The Hills – Much better. Everyone loves the cheesy way the chorus is sung, and the great build up to the last chorus. Another 5/5
12. Running Free – Once more the audience are involved, and it rounds of the show perfectly, and the drum intro will have you tapping for days. 5/5
Overall its got to be a 4.5/5, only missing that 5/5 because of some weak points in songs, Bruce’s vocals aren’t always great, and, understandably, the production is slightly weak. But don’t let that put you off, it is superb, and I think better than Rock In Rio because it features the better older songs. A great way to get into more Maiden if you’ve only got Dance Of Death, or haven’t heard any older material.
