Standout Tracks~

Children of Decadence - This is the most accessable song to those who aren't used to this kind of music. The intro is astounding, the song has a really nice tempo to it and the keyboards flow really well with the guitar.

Everytime I Die - This is just what Children of Bodom do best; great riffs, great keyboard work, good tempo that keeps the song flowing and once again a great solo from alexi.

Hate me - Starts quite slow but when it starts it never lets up; the guitar fills and interludes on this track are great and both of the solos are just excellent.

Bodom After Midnight - Plain and simple a perfect combination of all the members talents; quite a lot of people regard this as the best song on the album.

Review~

Well.. when i first heard Children of Bodom ( when i was just into metal and hard rock ) I was disappointed; had heard lots of great things about them but the Black Metal vocals i just hated. I gave this album a few listens and decided that the music was excellent, the keyboards and guitars just fitted each other perfectly. Eventually the vocals grew on me and now Children of Bodom are in my favorite 3 bands ever.

This album is remarkable; every song on it is catchy, addictive and brimming with talent. A lot of effort went into this album, and it shows. There is a lot of complex guitar work, excellent drumming and some really snazzy use of keyboards that all fit really well with each other. The band is on top form and show that they're in this for the long run.

If you like metal; give it a chance. If you like Black metal then i think you'll fall in love with this album. :D

(You forgot to rate it)

In my opinion Kissing the Shadows is the best track on Follow the Reaper. The guitar work is amazing and the synths fit in perfectly. If you're just getting into Black Metal you should buy this cd, it's a good addition.

4.5/5

Would you say this one is their best?

No, not their best; Hatecrew Deathroll is a better album but this is still in my top albums of all time; i don't even like black metal but i just can't stop listening to this :thumb:

I REALLY suggest you try them out.

This is my first black metal cd, my other metal tastes were things like Master of Puppets. I downloaded Kissing the Shadows, I wasn't too fond of it at first but I found myself humming it! So almost on impulse, I bought the album, and now I really love it! Alexi's vocals were annoying at first, but they've definitely grown on me. Kissing the Shadows is probably the best song on there, the guitar and keyboard work is godlike! I've only just turned 15, so what do you reckon my chances of playing it are? ;-) i can manage a lot of it, just not the solos. They're impossible!

Great album.

I think your my twin; i first hated Alexis voice and i was disappointed after the hype CoB had. I found myself humming the cool leads so i listened more and eventualy i grew to LOVE Alexi in every way :D. I'm 16, played 3 and a bit years and i can do a few of their solos and 90% of their rhythm stuff. The huge keyboard/guitar duel thing at the end of Kissing the Shadows is excellent.

First of all, the review wasn't bad. However, saying CoB is black metal is like saying Slayer are death metal. There is nothing black metal about CoB, even the vocals. The vocals are simply death metal vocals except with more variation. Black metal vocals are far more high pitched and include a lot more "screaming" than "growling".

Oh, and CoB are boring.

Good reasoning there; well balanced argument.....as in not.
But Children of Bodom are heavily black metal influenced; no way are they death - theyre not heavy enough, growly enough etc, if you actualy listened to them properly you'd see that theyre more black than anything else.
Next time explain your reasons - you just look like a stupid brat otherwise.

Oh, and your boring.

er, i believe it's "you are" or "you're".

Moreover, if you call them black metal you'd probably call Arch Enemy and the whole melodic death crowd black metal as well then now wouldn't you? Listen to Arch Enemy's Stigmata/Burning Bridges and you'll understand what i mean. Secondly, i just explained to you why i don't think they're black metal, mainly because the vocals don't sound like black metal, the drumming isn't "black metal", the lyrics/ideology isn't "black metal" and last but not least, the guitars aren't black metal.

You're telling me to "explain my reasons", i didn't see any elucidation from your part on why you think CoB are black metal.

And seemingly that's where your musical knowledge seems to end.

Must say, i'm not surprised.

Wow, well done, good work. Now go away; this is a Cd review not a "please come in all ye who think theyre better than others" thread. Just don't reply unless its about the Cd. Yeah good work making prejudices about music knowledge over a couple of sentences; go get a life.

Thats why i like Children of Bodom - you can't put them in one genre easily, i say they're black ( but i'm not into that scene so im probably wrong ) you say they're power which i disagree on and the death thread puts them as melodic death.

CoB black metal? please........... have you even heard black metal?

melodic death metal with a slight neo-classical influence is how you'd classify CoB.

wonna hear black metal vocals?

Marduk, Catharsis, Emperor, Burzum, Mayhem, Gorgoroth.......

Alexei squals like a little girl in comparison :chug:

Children of Bodom are NOT black metal. They are POWER METAL. CoB have the fruity guitars and the insane solos but a metal vocalist. I have the CD, and I love it. My old band played Kissing the Shadows...good song, intense on guitar.

wow im impressed does the lead guitarist sing while playing all the lead!?!?!
I love all the CoB albums, hatecrew deathroll just a litle less than the others. Children Of Bodom arent 'pure' black metal as in the neo nazi stuff but i would call them progressive black metal. Great CD the guitar work is pretty insane :thumb:

Neo-nazi doesn't equal black metal. And I don't think Alexi plays all that much whilst singing, he often (from the video clips I've seen) stops playing to sing, and vice versa.

What im saying is proper black metal is a lot more hardcore than CoB. Anyway... in Kissing the shadows he's playing the chorus riff whilst singing, i swear that has to be one of the most insane riffs ever. Alexi is a very good guitarist and i rate him highly...thats just my opinion
