Review Summary: A very solid death metal album with only one big flaw: A highly distorted guitar. America was first to bring death metal to the scene, death metal was created because everyone was fed up with thrash during the 80’s so the kids wanted something more extreme. America was first, but Sweden has also quite productive at churning out death metal bands over the decades. Entombed and Dismember were two bands that became the platform for the Swedish death metal scene. But if we dig deep enough we will find one of the better bands that have almost succeeded to forge old-school brutal death metal with modern influences. Bloodbath is one such band, not terribly unique but they are way better than most of the bands that likes to stick with the old-school formula. Bloodbath started as a small death metal project by some of Sweden’s most ’’lesser known’’ skilled metal musicians. But this small scale project would later expand into a huge and serious death metal project. The band has released yet one EP and two full-lengths, and they are planning to release a mini CD in the late summer of 2007 (the fans gets exited). Bloodbath has been focusing mostly on brutal death metal, but small doses of melody can still be heard throughout on their latest work.
Resurrection Through Carnage is their second album and it really packs a punch. The album is all about ultra heavy riffs and vocals, but this brings both flaws and surprises. Most tracks here are similar to the three tracks from the EP (Breeding Death). There are tempo changes in many of the songs, first they get intense and later they get somewhat slower, and then they jump back in forth in pace again. Some of the tracks actually have melodies in them, but in small doses. Cry My Name and The Soulcollector would be two songs with melodies. Most tracks contain dark and sinister riffing, dark unpleasant atmospheres and one-dimensional vocal work. These factors make this album quite repetitive compared to their other work.
There are two things on this album that really makes this album to a standout among Bloodbath’s material. First of all we have this odd sounding guitar, and I really mean this when I say it. I have never heard a guitar sound like this in a death metal album. It is a really thick, crunchy and sort of ‘’guttural’’ sound that comes out of one of the guitars. It really makes the album brutal and gory, and of course evil and incredibly heavy. The second thing that makes this album excellent in the immense growls from the growl master himself: Mikael Akerfeldt. Seriously, this is a unique growler, his growls could be described as sharp, tearing, forceful and… meaty. Anyway, with his growls and the thick guitar makes this album more ultra heavy and pounding than most death metal albums that I have heard. Only Grave’s album As Rapture Comes or Hypocrisy’s Osculum Obscenum album would be the only competitors to match this album (in terms of grimness and heaviness). The albums biggest flaws would probably be the highly distorted guitar and the slight repetitiveness, other flaws would be the lack of vocal variety and maybe the lyrics. Other than that the album is quite solid for being a brutal death metal album. One other problem would be that you will like the album at the beginning, but after a few listens you will probably loose interest in it.
Bloodbath’s Resurrection Through Carnage is a strong album, it’s a very brutal and sledgehammer heavy death metal album which is also unusually catchy. People who like most types of death metal (especially brutal death metal) will definitely like this album. Fans of Opeth will probably enjoy this because of Akerfeldt’s unique growling. I highly recommend that you look into songs like Cry My Name, Like Fire, The Soulcollector and Trail Of Insects if you are interested of getting this. This album will be given a sturdy 3.5/5 because of its heaviness, grimness, brutality and Mikael’s vocals.

i really dont like this cd. the summary sentence is entirely correct, the guitar tone/distortion kills me. i expect MUCH more from the likes of dan swano and mikael akerfeldt. and while the guitar was a major flaw here, the songwriting really just sucks, the only song i honestly enjoy on here is ways to the grave.
excellent work on the review :thumb:
im glad im not the only one that found that guitar distortion so annoying

Great review, great album. One of my favorite death metal albums.

Not as good as NMF but still pretty decent. Soulcollector is my favorite song off this album, but I can't listen to the whole thing before getting bored. Somewhat short for a Dethtrasher review, but you said all there is to say about this album. Good job.
| | | I love this album. The chainsaw guitar basically is what makes it so good...

Many thanks, I actually enjoy the distortion but in some songs it just gets too much. But NMF is still their greatest moment, too bad that Akerfeldt doesn't have the same vocal variety as Tagtgren has.
Somewhat short for a Dethtrasher review, but you said all there is to say about this album. Good job.
Hehe, I'm trying to stay within a page when I write now. It makes the reivews shorter and easier to read (I hope). My NMF review was almost two pages when I looked at it.

Really well written review Deththrasher. Seriously, not to sound like Im comparing Bloodbath to Opeth because there are few similarites, but once you hear Opeth and you know that Akterfeld is in Bloodbath, you think to yourself, "why is he wasting his time"?

It's more of a fun side project than a serious commitment. Listening to this album is a good time, Akerfeldt shows off his great death metal growl with this band.

@kal
hell yeah dawg :lol: no but i really love that album, every death metal fan should have it
@the wizard
exactly. and dan swano for god's sakes! edge of sanity, katatonia, etc slays the material on here and theyre not even brutal bands or anything.

You can't really compare Katatonia and this band but I see what you're saying.
| | | For the love of God, it's not even worthy to be called a side project. It's just a bunch of Swedes recording a tribute to an old school DM album. And it's GOOD. Don't bother with who's in what...would it be any different if this record were played by 12 year olds?
| | | It boggles my mind that one of your critiques for this album is its guitar tone. That heavily distorted, chainsaw-esque buzz is the most defining part of their sound. Heavens, never listen to Dismember, you might have a hernia lol
