Review Summary: A cheesy rhyme review of Skynyrd's second debut album. This is a great album, and it is extremely fun to listen to.
You've seen it by poets, by Dr. Suess. I'm going to let the rhymes come loose. This time I'll be reviewing Lynyrd Skynyrd's Second Helping. Unlike a lot of the things I review, this album has no yelping. It's just good, fun, classic rock. I borrowed this from a friend who was wearing socks. The music in it is very good. Lots of hits sprung from this, and they rightfully have should. The album is quite small, but if you're like me, you'll enjoy much of it all.
Let's start with the vocals, shall we now? How does Van Zant sing like that, how? He has the perfect Southern Rock voice. I could not do it if I had the choice. The backing vocals are pretty goshdarn great, how many singers are there? It sounds like eight! It sounds just like an entire chorus. These upbeat vocals will certainly not bore us! Well what about the music you may ask? Playing some of these riffs were most likely not a difficult task. But some of the riffs are quite great. I love the guitar in
Workin' For MCA. The number of tracks? Only eight. But these eight tracks are all fun songs. None of which are too long.
The bass is noticeable is most of the tracks. The greatness of
Workin' For MCA kicks me in my sack! I love the bass on songs like the aforementioned song, this song is wonderfully catchy, and not too long. Every song on the album is the perfect length. Every track has a certain strength. The only bland song is
I Need You. This is boring, yes it is. When I heard this song, I thought what was I do? I had low expectations of the songs that would come, but I was wrong, but what about dull moments? There were some.
Swamp Music can become repetitive after a while, but there are some parts of the song that just make me smile. The musicianship for instance. This is always great! Especially the piano solo on track eight! That's right,
Call Me The Breeze is quite a great tune, and the perfect closer. It's just a shame that the album is over! It ends too soon, yes it does. Now about the production. There is no fuzz! Second Helping is pretty clean, and it's got a light feeling, so nothing sounds mean. Never once on this album does the band sound as if they are full of anger.
Some of the songs may sound alike.
Don't Ask Me No Questions sounds similar to
Workin' For MCA. They are both great songs, that get played on the radio everyday. However, there are similarities. But these aren't the songs that made Skynyrd celebrities.
Sweet Home Alabama is this track, it's the perfect opener, and the catchiness of it gives you a smack. This song is short, energetic, and it's fun. It's the perfect length, and you're glad that it's done. This may be a great song, but not the best on the CD.
Workin' For MCA really makes me happy.
Now it's time to do the pros and the cons, but you shall find that there isn't much wrong.
Pros:
+ The guitarists' skills show
+ Each song is catchy, don't you know?
+
Workin' For MCA is the best track
+ When I borrowed this album, I did not wish to take it back
Cons:
- Too short, should be longer, buy the expanded edition, if you do not, for it you'll be wishin'
- Swamp Music is repetitive after a while, but like I said before, parts of it make me smile.
- I Need You is kind of dull, to say it's awesome is a load of bull.
4/5
This is good 'ol classic rock. Please do not mock. Old stuff is good. Listen to it, you should. This is not for everybody, just people searchin' for a good time. If you want to get into Skynyrd, buy it, and don't ask why!
Until next time,
