Review Summary: industrial metal band static-x gives us a first helping of their fast techno metal

Alrighty, I’ve been on the site a couple weeks and thought I’d write a review. So here it goes:

STATIC-X WISCONSIN DEATH TRIP

Here we are with Static-X and their debut album released in ’99. Wisconsin Death Trip is what they call it. Made up of Wayne Static on vocals and guitar, Koichi Fukuda on guitar, Tony Campos on bass and backup singing and Ken Jay the drummer, these guys started in ’94 when Wayne’s old band Deep Blue Dream broke up. They Wayne and Ken went all over the place went to find Tony in California and Koichi in Japan (Wayne was from Michigan by the way). But enough with this here goes the review

1.Push It The album opens up with a little guitar thinger, then breaks into a simple kinda catchy riff that repeats pretty much the whole song. Simple catchy riffs and electronics is what X is known for and it shows in this song especially the bridge. 3.5/5

2.’m With Stupid It starts with Wayne’s voice coming in and screaming HE”S A LOSER SHE SAID and then goes to a quick catchy riff. Then you hear some weird voice going SHOULD I GRAB MY SHOVEL and I thought it was pretty cool. The lyrics are kinda like WHAT THE HELL??? but the band isn’t known for good lyrics writing. Any ways all in all good fast song. 4/5

3.Bled for Days Commences with a little electronic thing then goes into a really simple riff. I play bass and it just goes 1-1-1-0-1 during the whole song. But in spite of this the song is alright and solid. 3.25/5

4.Love Dump When I got the CD, this title sounded interesting. So I heard it and liked it. I think Static-X used a formula similar to dance music where something quick and catchy repeats mostly the whole song. Singing is there, but it’s not the main focus and lyrics aren’t really there to be that great. Rammstein uses this too although I think Rammstein is better. Anyways, the song is alright not a big stand out but good enough to spend 4 minutes and 19 seconds listening to. 3/5

5.I Am This one starts with an awesome distorted riff with drums coming in eventually. I thought it was pretty cool. Then some more simple fast Static-x stuff. I think this would be a good club song because just of the whole way the song works. I really don’t think they are a good big arena band. I think they we’re better making these kind of song instead of going all Shadow Zone and making not-so-good metal. 4/5

6.Otsegolation This one is a really good dancy song with beeps by the guitar. There’s not really a distinguishable chorus in the song, but I like it none the less. 3.5/5

7.Stem Crickets. Very original or ran out of ideas? You choose. Anyways, after the bugs making sounds we come to a relatively slow drum line and synth going into guitars and the riff that I liked but other people didn’t. it sounds mellow and layed back. The vocals are all screaming. Then the bridge is sounds like reversed something and these crickets again. 3/5

8.Sweat of the Bud Slow sounds from Stem carry into this techno-metal onslaught. I LIKE!! Really catchy riff. Lyrics are kind of what the hell by you have to remember it’s Static-X, but I liked the song. 3.60/5

9.Fix Typical X song. Fast. Although I liked the bridge where there’s guitar and you hear a little electronic thing. Man, I’m amused by such stupid little things. 3.30/5

10.Wisconsin Death Trip The title track (ha no duh). I liked it and it was good for the most part. Another what the hell song, but whatever. We all need some of that every once and a while. Ha we all need some terracotta pie once in a while.  3.5/5

11.Trance Is The Motion Cool song. Starts with electronics and hand clapping and I was like whoa man Wayne don’t start rapping and it’s a good thing he didn’t cause if he would have I would have killed myself now and then. But thankfully he didn’t start rapping and I didn’t kill myself so I listened to the song. This one was kinda slow too and I think they should have just ditched December and made this one the last song but whatever. 3.5/5

12.December Meh, like I said, they could have done without this one but whatever man. It was different but it was mostly noise. I think they just made this song so long to get the album over 40 minutes. Wisconsin Death Trip finishes with noise. BBBBBSSSHHHHHH

Ya, so as you can see it’s a good opening album. It was mainly dominated by quick catchy riffs, some good electronics and what the hell lyrics. From The Pressman, it gets 3.5/5. GOOD JOB STATIC-X!

Welcome to Sputnikmusic. I have been on here for about a year now and I still havent written a review (Im still picking and choosing my first review). Not a bad review for a first timer, but your grammer and all that fun stuff needs to be fixed up before I will rate it ( I will probably get the same comment when I write my first one someday hahaha). If you want a good idea of what a descent review looks like and how it flows, I would refer to some of Shadows, Mikesn, and South_of Heavens reviews (just to name a few). These guys excel in writing metal album reviews.

Welcome to Sputnik. Decent first review although stray away from the track by track style as soon as possible, it's just much more interesting to read if it's not in that format. Also check out Thors reviews they're great metal reviews too.
