Release Date: 1986 | Tracklist

Lately, I wanted to review something that I've been listening for almost a decade. I was 12 years old when I first listen to this record. Now I'm 20 and my perspective has changed a lot. Why all these people are shouting that slayer's Reign In Blood is the best thrash metal album ever. Because it's fast???evil???chaotic??? Simply because this record has seen the light of the day at the right moment.

Thrash metal was only 5 years old and the style was getting more and more attention. Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, etc. All these band we're getting bigger and some people we're scared about the fact that these band are gonna be on MTV and make super catchy radio songs. Master Of Puppets has been out for almost 6 months and some of the Metallica fan we're angry about the band growing and not being the backyard party band anymore. In october 1986 the world receive a big punch in the face with the release of Reign In Blood.

This 31 minutes record is not only a thrash frenzy of riff and evil lyrics. It was simply a warning for all the people who were doubting about the status of thrash metal. Slayer just said: Here's what we do best and that's the way it will always be. Fast, heavy, chaotic, dark, evil, etc. He're a lot of adjective that could describe this record.

From the first riff of ''Angel Of Death'' to the last chaotic wahmmy bar abuse of ''Rainning Blood'', slayer finds a way to blow your mind. The riffs we're fresh at the time. I mean, they we're not overused like some of the riff that they've come out on ''Christ illusion''. Almost every riffs has become a trademark to thrash metal in the same way of Black Sabbath's riffs has become with metal.

Chaotic solos, insane double bass, evil singing. All adjective that describe slayer seem to be in exageration but that's what it is. For example, nobody's a been that fast at double bass. Lombardo was like the first to go over 200 bpm on double bass(Without any triggers). Sure, hundreds of drummers has followed his path in the next couple of years, It's basically what happened. Slayer has changed metal. They we're the band to follow on the dark side of metal.

Overall everybody has come with an awesome performance. The songs are short and quite simple. It's not a record that you have to concentrate too much. The music is brutal and the lyrics is just the reflexions of the music. Writing about War, Religion and Evil was not a part of the culture. Slayer was the first band to directly attack christianity, Reign In Blood was too much at the time. I think it has even been banned in some country,

Now check around yourself and ask anybody. Everyone knows Slayer. In a way or another they all have seen of heard of it. Slayer are like a giant wave who's getting over all the world. Now, a lot of band do what slayer's did. Slayer themselves are trying to do what they have done in the past. That's why this record is such a clasic. 22 years and we're still talking about this. It is still considered has one of the most brutal records ever made. This record is a classic and those who rate it badly are just people who are scared of slayer. I'm sure they haven't listen to it yet.

Pros:

-The riffs
-Dave Lombardo
-Araya's voice is at his peak
-Total Chaos
-31 minutes is short so it's not hard to get through it

Cons:

-31 minutes is too short for some

You write here and were as he're and we're. Were is the past tense of to be, we're is short for we are. He're doesn't mean anything at all. This Message Edited On 04.01.07

Great but overrated album. Your review didn't speak to me about why this is a "classic" album.

And that was an interesting statistic about Lombardo, I didn't realize he was the first to breach 200 bpm on the bass.

thank you Altmer. I'll fix this. Bfbhurricane, It is simple...it came at the right moment and it has changed the face of metal. You have to put yourself in 1986 to understand why it's a classic album. This album has influenced, Metal, Thrash metal and death metal.

I'm pretty sure he was trying to say you could have justified your rating more. He wasn't trying to argue with the rating in that statement, correct me if I'm wrong. I need to listen to this again, I used to a lot when I was into this scene.

Sure it came at a convenient time... except that two of thrash metals biggest acts also came out with albums that year... Metallica with Master of Puppets and Megadeth with Peace Sells. Great year for metal, but those two albums had a lot more shimmer to them than this. Saying it came out at an appropriate time doesn't justify the rating

Now, if youre trying to say that the fact that this was the rawest, heaviest, fastest, and possibly the most influential album of anything that could dare to challenge it, then thats different

I guess everyone interprets a score of "5/5" differently but for me it would indicate that the album is essentially perfect, and to say that about this album, while it is undoubtedly good, is crazy in my opinion. But if you really enjoy it as if it were perfect then good for you, everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course. I don't feel any Slayer album deserves a 5 but that's just me.
