Release Date: 1999 | Tracklist

I finally got this CD off of Amazon, since this wasn’t at any of the music stores I go to. I have to admit, it was the best…$5 I’ve ever spent!

This is the second EP by AFI. This EP has two tracks that made it to the Retrospective; The Offspring covered one track from this album on the Me, Myself and Irene soundtrack (which everyone knows about by now) and AFI did a cover song that was originally written by Glenn Danzig from The Misfits.

Fall Children

This song is what you’d expect from an album called All Hallow’s EP. It starts off with guitar lines that aren’t very loud, but still goes good with the theme on this album. The guitars eventually gain some treble. Davey starts singing and then the song starts to get real fast with excellent drum works by Adam. Davey does his usual high singing with the occasional “woah-ohh” for background vocals, which is done by everyone, by the way. In the middle of the song, the beat slows down, and a lot more background singing which worked great for this song. Around the end of the song, it picks up speed again with a chimey percussion right at the end. I almost forgot about mentioning that this song made it to the retrospective.

Halloween

The song AFI chose to cover. It starts off with eerie chords and then chords that are easier to listen. Everybody singing “Hallowee-ee-ee-en” will keep you hooked to this song. Don’t expect it to last though, because it’s only 1 and a half minutes long. The other half of the song has somewhat creepy piano playing with other strange effects getting louder and louder as it goes along. Then it gets quiet again.

The Boy Who Destroyed the World

The one song on this EP I’m not very interested in. It sounds a lot like Sacrifice Theory to me. The drums in this one are similar to the first song and the background voices are not so great. I do like the outro, which is a thunderstorm. Another thing is that it’s not repetitive. You can tell by the change of pace in the interlude.

Totalimmortal

One of my favorite AFI songs ever! It has fast guitar chords at the start and chorus, bass lines in the verses that were well done, and the variation they did in the middle of the song. More ohhs from the background singers, but with one difference: They’ve done the best background singing in this song. This is the song The Offspring covered on the Me, Myself and Irene soundtrack. Not only that, but it’s the second song on this album that made it on the retrospective.

What I liked:
-In a way, it lets you know what to expect for The Art of Drowning.
-AFI found a way to make Halloween longer

What I didn’t like:
-There were only 4 songs. Seeing that this is how EPs are usually done, however, I’m not going to lower their score for that.

The final score:

Fall Children- 4/5
Halloween- 4.5/5
The Boy Who Destroyed the World- 3.5/5
Totalimmortal- 5/5 (Best song)

(If I didn't do a track-by-track, this would be a really short review!)

I guess I wasn't very accurate on "The Boy..."

One of my favorite EPs. I always make it a top priority to play this on and around Halloween. The cover isn't the greatest but Totalimmortal and The Boy Who Destroyed the World are classic AFI tracks.

good review, although as Plath said, a bit more info on the middle two tracks wouldn't go amiss (you cant JUST compare a song to sacrifice theory, because many people might not have heard it).

i completely agree with your overall rating though, this is a solid EP and the one which got me into AFI. probably their joint best release, along with black sails and art of drowning.

Pretty good review. If I were you, I'd expand upon a few of teh songs, but Plath and Spoon have already been over that with you it seems. :-)

This is the next AFI CD on my "buy" list. Art of Drowning was slightly disappointing, but I've heard that this and Black Sails are better.

Yeah, there were some songs from that album that weren't really great.

The next AFI CD on my buy list is A Fire Inside EP.This Message Edited On 04.06.07

If AFI continued this to make an album with this quality of songwriting it would be their best
