Slipknot went on hiatus again so
Stone Sour could record their second album, which turned out to be a hit. Stone Sour, to me, is complicated, in a case of whether it's a side project or not. I say this because Slipknot had a major label before Stone Sour but Stone Sour was a band before Slipknot. Side projects are formed because they write songs that aren't fit for thier band, experiment with different genres of music, or just make more money by joining another band.
This is who Stone Sour currently is:
Corey Taylor- Vocals (Slipknot)
James Root- Guitar (Slipknot)
Shawn Economaki- Bass
Josh Rand- Guitar
Roy Maygora- Drums (Soulfly)
The album starts off with
30/30-150, which is styled like
Get Inside. The difference is Corey dosen't do much screaming. There is a guest drummer for this song which is Shannon Larkin from
Godsmack. THIS person did an amazing drum solo in the middle of the song.
Come What(ever) May is a catchy song. The singing in this one is lighter and doesn’t have a lot of strumming. The only screaming I hear is "what the hell/f
uck is free about it?".
One of the best songs on this album is
Hell & Consequences. One of the things that keep you hooked to this song is the chorus. Another is the guitar riffs done on this song by Jim and Josh. Roy does a decent job with the double kick. Personally, I think he's better than the last drummer.
Strange how the fourth song is always the somewhat mellow song. That's exactly what's going on with
Sillyworld. This is one of the songs that Corey played guitar in. It's styled like a typical ballad-like song. With acoustic verses and heavy choruses. This is another good song on this CD.
One song I'm not fond of is
Made of Scars. It's pretty average to me. Though the chorus is pretty good. The instruments are simple beats, and Corey dosen't do a hell of a lot of singing. But I guess you shouldn't have a really heavy song to follow up with Sillyworld.
And now, back to some better songs.
Reborn has good drums and speedy guitar strums at the start. The verses are like Made of Scars, only there is some aggressive vocals in the chorus and when he screams REBORN (THIS IS THE START OF SOMETHING!!). I like the ending too. "MOTHERF
UCKER!!"
I like the guitar work in the next song. In
Your God, it starts off with"What am I supposed to do now?". The guitars get louder, the cymbals start to be beaten and then it gets softer. The guitar solos done on this song are f**king wicked!
One of the singles on this album is
Through Glass, another song with Corey on the guitar. One of thier first songs I've ever heard were this one and Bother, and therefore, I didn't think Stone Sour was a metal band. This is still a good song. And you know what? Mello songs work with Stone Sour and not Slipknot. Just listen to Circle and you'll know what I'm talking about.
Socio is another song I'm not fond of. It fails to keep my interest. Yep. Not much to say about this song. Sure, this shows some song variety, but there's nothing special about it. Besides, Cardiff is like Socio, only better.
1st Person is another fantastic song. It doesn’t sound like much at first, but it'll escallade into a fast-paced and awesome song with an excellent bridge. It sounds like something from thier Self-Titled album.
The song that I was talking about earlier,
Cardiff, is another classic on this album. It's not mellow, it's not heavy, it's neat.
And now, the last song (I know, sad),
Zzyzx rd.. It is the best way to end an album. They use a piano, an acoustic and a guitar riff from Jim. There is no aggressiveness from Corey, but it wouldn't work for this kind of song. It has some low singing, but throughout the song, he starts to sing higher.
