Right, this album was released in 1997, when in my opinion they still had a raw punk sound. This album is good but not their best, and still retains the hardcore edge they had on answer that and stay fashionable.
Throughout the album there is the on going theme hate and sadness, and these guys dont really seem like very happy chappies, but all the better at least they right good music because of it. One of my fave AFI intros starts of this album 'Keeping Out Of Direct Sunlight' with the usual chanting thing going on, and it kicks off the album nicely with some good shouts from Mark in there. It leads nicely into three reasons, followed by my faveroutie track on this album 'a single second,' abslotuly amazing chorus which i love, the backing vocals taking a strong hold here, kind of overpowering davies voice, which for once is a good thing. Sadly, the next few tracks, are medicore. They follows the usual palm muted verse and sing/shout OI! background vox chorus, without much flare or originatly. Thankfully some tracks do save the rest of this album, such as 'three seconds notice' , 'todays lesson' and 'triple zero' which all differ from the main body of the album. It seems that until AFI had a full line up on BSITS, they couldnt focus on music making as much as they could on pumping out albums. After a re-listen to this album, i have decided to add some more good points. The vocals on this album are alot better than i first thought, and the backing vocals really do make song. The guitars are also great on alot of these songs, with some very hardcore riffs and rythms going on IE.pH low/lower your head and take it in the body and coin return. The bass lines are also good on many tracks. I understand that i was abit harsh the first time round, but after i relisten i did enjoy this album alot more.
Although many tracks are good, some are not that great. I prefer ATASF to this, but think that the more punk edge of this album is good.
Recomended Tracks:
A single second
Three seconds notice
Triple Zero
Coint Return
Salt For Your Wouds
overall 3/5, slightly dissapointing for an AFI album, but still good. If you dont enjoy this to start of with, have a re-listen as i did, and you will probably be pleasently suprised.

ThePalaceOfWisdom (3) Sure its got that raw punk sound and feel to it, but that gets boring after three albums....

Not a very good review. I don't own this album but I have heard most of the songs and I really like them. At first you say you think it's quite good, and then you rate it a 2.75? "The New Patron Saints And Angels", "The Devil Loves You", "Third Season" and "Coin Retur" are all amazing songs.
| | | ok i guess actually im gonna change this rating to 3
| | | ok and 3/5 IMO is dissapointing for AFI cause i love every other album they did
| | | Pretty aggressive CD in my opinion. This is how they were justified in calling themselves hardcore back in the day when they did. I think it's a great change of pace for AFI. This is the type of music, I was hoping they would've kept up for at least one more full-release. (Seeing as how they pretty much had 2 albums per similar-type-music like ATASF was to VPOY and like AOD was to BSITS). But they didn't so that's what makes this one so unique. This is the kind of music I like to play, so no complaints on any one song here.
Favorite songs on this: Let It Be Broke, Coin Return, Triple Zero
Weakest song has to be Third Season though.
Not for everyone, that's for sure, but it gets a 5/5 in my book.
| | | ok... well i didnt make many people happy doing this cd... lol
i just preffered answer that and stay fashionable to this by uite alot
| | | Nah it wasn't that bad, you just didn't really describe it very well. You could also have added a discography/link to one. 3/5 Seems alright, as it doesn't compare to their latest 3 releases.
| | | i think this is the best cd they ever done i like them all except for the newest one
| | | ok i re-liustened for the benefit of not looking ignorant and have altered my review to suit
| | | I like your review a lot better now, 88 Fingers Joe. Good job. :thumb:
| | | lol thx
check out my van halen - van halen review
i was supirsed no one had done it i jumped on the chance
| | | I gotta do a few of them after looking at the reviewed list. Very Proud Of Ya being one of them. But that's gonna take a little while since I'm reviewing in detail all 24 of the tracks on there.
I don't know if I should do it for the retrospective though. I have every song on there, just not the actual CD itself. I'm also gonna do some Nekromantix, Tiger Army, Subhumans, and ah hell, there's a lot more.
Okay, I didn't notice a really big difference in your new review. I didn't really care about how you did it the first time. This album is definitely not for everyone.
