FBTMOF have gone in a different direction after their first album “Odd How People Shake”. Instead of following the majority of bands within the genre, and going poppier while adding more melodic singing, FBTMOF have gone in a heavier direction. The first things you notice when comparing it to their debut, it that the riffs are heavier, the singer’s voice has lowered and there are less back up vocals from the guitarist. Brandon’s drumming has improved greatly and fits in almost perfectly with all the songs. The bass sounds great the few times you hear it.

“Art Damage” starts off with Hey Kid, I’m A Computer. Stop All The Downloading . The guitar makes some strange noise and soon the drums, bass and screams kick in. 45 Seconds into the song the guitarist and screaming sing together, which then turns into a dual vocals part. Quite well done. The third chorus is accompanied by some nice ‘Oooh’s which also adds to the song. Should Have Stayed In The Shallows smacks you straight in the face with the metal riffs. More of the same screaming from Dave, with Rupert singing the “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls ”. One of my favorite parts of the album starts then, “The shark that got her was an efficient killer ” Where Dave screams most of it but his voice turns into a singing voice towards the end. Then starts Consequenses David, You’ll Meet Your Fate In The Styx , you can finally hear bass! The screaming and guitars then come in. After 1:30 the song slows down and I think it’s the only time you actually hear Dave sing on this album, sounds very cool with the echo on the guitar. Whiskey Is Alright In Its Place, But Its Place Is In Hell starts off immediately. Dave’s screams go to an almost death metal-like growl in this song. The Story Of Curious Oysters has some quite catchy guitaring in the intro and some more death metal-like vocals. Drumming stands out in this song. Absolutely Fabulous And Me , and The Long Road To The Middle seem quite boring compared to the past few songs, but the album gets better again, a lot better actually. The State Of Texas VS Fear Before is a song that could easily have been written by Every Time I Die. This song is similar to “On The Bright Side, She Could Choke” as it is easily the catchiest song from Art Damage. Very fast song with chaotic vocals. Rupert’s backing vocals don’t get much better than this. Law Of Averages starts off heavy, but then turns into a poppier riff. I love it how they often go from very heavy to poppy even though you don’t notice much of the poppyness on this album. The song ends very suddenly and this album gives you a break right when you need it. A Tyrant Meets His Maker is a great instrumental interlude. Quite a beautiful piece of music, too bad it only lasts for about a minute. The God Awful Truth starts off very heavy, with slow drumming. Then the song speeds up and the screaming comes in. Back to the intro and then the screamer comes in, backed by the guitarist. Then the intro slowly fades out.

Recommended songs: The State Of Texas VS Fear Before is quite the essential track. (you can hear it on www.purevolume.com/fearbeforethemarchofflames) Hey Kid , and Should Have Stayed In The Shallows are very good tracks too.

Pros
- Excellent drumming
- Good backing vocals
- Gone in a heavier direction
- Good lyrics

Cons
- Songs all sound very similar
- Lyrics are repeated a lot
- Very short (less than 30 minutes in total)

EDIT: Rating: 3.8/5

Whew, a good thing I didn't buy it. Less than 30 minutes?? I kinda like their sound more right now, but I think Odd How People Shake's a more well-rounded album. Good review Sep

Yes, I also prefer "Odd How People Shake" over this one, but this is still a great second album. 30 Minutes is about the right time for this album I'd say, as all the songs sound very similar. Thanks, Happymeal.

I heard "The State Of Texas vs. Fear Before The March Of Flames," and though it was hard-hitting, it didn't take my breath away, like "On The Brightside, She Could Choke" did. I listened to the whole album and really wasn't impressed. But like you said, it's not horrible, I just prefer the frantic, almost poppy progressions of Odd How People Shake. Great review.

Edit: Does anyone else notice the uncanny similarity between the backing vocals and Keith of ETID's vocals?

Yeah, their new stuff is definitely a lot harder to get into. You should check out "Should Have Stayed In The Shallows" if you can, that is the best track after "The State Of Texas" in my opinion.

Agreed. The backing vocals on "Hey Kid..." are just amazing though.

When I heared Fear Before The March of Flames around the time, maybe a little after, they came out I was like "meh." Then I was talking with a friend a week before Art Damage came out and she's like "I got the new Fear Before album and it's really good." I was like "Eh...I'm not a huge fan." She then sent me "The Story of The Curious Oysters" and I was really blown away by it. I went and got the album and thought it was really good. I then decided to go back and listen to Odd How People Shake again. I don't know why, but my opinion changed and I actually thought that Odd How People Shake was, in some ways, better than Art Damage.

Yeah, Odd How People Shake doesn't get as repetitive as Art Damage . I find it very hard to listen to Art Damage more than once in a row. Odd How People Shake also had the softer songs to break the pace a little.

Yeah, I agree. I enjoyed the breaks a lot. I really liked the piano one. It was very calming and a great way to end an album.

Yes, I also quite enjoy the little acoustic song with just Rupert singing after "Go Wash Your Mouth, I Don't Know Where It's Been".

Picked this up yesterday. I'm impressed. I still stand by my statement of OHPS > AD but this CD has alot to offer. Where as OHPS's focus was more extreme emotion acheived through poppy, catchy melodies and guitar parts, the focus of AD seems to be more on frightening the listener. It's a much darker album. The riffs are darker and more frantic, as are the vocals. Also, they went for the more Botch style riffs, pull off/hammer on riffing. I think the CD does try to be a little too artsy with the booklet pictures and all. I think my friend was pretty spot on when he said "Hey Kid..." sounds like the soundtrack to a school shooting. The video for "Should Have..." is also pretty freaky, in the end they are covered in blood. Anyway, those are my thoughts on the album. Songs do tend to sound the same but definitely a great sophomore release.

I liked this CD alot! Especially Should Have Stayed In the Shallows when the guitarist guy yells "Ladies and Gentleman, Boys and Girls!", its just so fitting with all the chaos.

I like this CD a bundle but I'm torn between it and OHPS.

Should have Stayed in the Shadows is a great song. Actually, most of them are they just get repetitive. They need to play each oart no more than twice per song and not be afraid of 1:30 long songs. This Message Edited On 10.31.05
