07.25.23 | been through Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing but it was on a theatre tour and we mainly only had time for vanilla tourist stuff. nothing i'd particularly insist on over your proposed method of travelling (which i *wish* we'd been able to do), other than the great wall (which really do be the business - make sure you go up in a cable car and down in a bobsleigh, and get a video of it all)
for Tokyo, i can rec you a fantastic traditional hostel in asakusa that has a great social hub, but get out and go to Kansai soon as you have a chance. Kyoto/Osaka/Nara have the best side of Japan for a shortish visit (Kamakura and Enoshima both work a maybe combined daytrip and/or hike if you have time when you pass through Kanagawa though. Hakone also cool, but more of a dedicated trip and less social)
also must check 9 and 2 |

07.25.23 | Lived in southern China for like a year and a half and was just in Japan a few months ago — honestly loved my time in China as far as the locals went. Really interesting and welcoming people. I know if you travel to like Shanghai the classism is felt a lot more, but if you’re just in the countryside or tier three and below cities you’ll have a good time. HK was my favorite city in the world but I’m not sure how it’s been since the CCP did CCP things there.

07.25.23 | Sweet Johhny yeah let me know the name man Im noting everything at the mo cos Im kinda going in blind with both to be honest. Only made my mind up 2 weeks ago and changed my flights at the weekend and just getting to grips with China and where to go what you can and cant do, Also its getting into winter so its a bit daunting. Plan is Beijing, Chengdu, 2 weeks around the Yunnan, proabbaly border of Tibet and the Tiger leaping gorge trek. WAS gonna go down through North Veitnam but think after all the trains and buses in China ill just fly straight to Cambodia from guangzhou which gives me like a week around Guilin & Yangshuo.
@bellovd Yeah I never heard ANYONE say they didnt like Japan, Just hoping theres some gigs on at the time
@Ry. Awesome man, Holiday? Business?
@Pots Funny I rang my Dad to tell him and hes like 'Well you decided on this life long ago' Travelling is the greatest obviously but Also I to 'sacrifice' living 8 months away from friends ,family and shows (well couple of shows but like 5 hours away). I do live in a fking BEAUTIFUL place but I lived most my adult life in my home country in a hotel room so I can do this. Cant afford no Mrs/Kids etc and knew maybe when Im older I might wish I had. Although Old as fk right now, no regrets. |

07.25.23 | @Hey Ill be in Beijing for maybe3/4 nights and Chengdu same, outside that all smallish places allthough some still quite touristy. My only real interaction with Chinese apart from cursing them for being EVERYWHERE you go on holiday is they were allowed into Cambdodia where I lived, ripped the place up, kicked locals out. Gang crime went crazy (all after I left) trafficking, just a seedy little wanna be Macau. There were 2 casinos when I was there they built over 100 but Covid fucked them. Even in Phnom Penh theres DAILY crashes of drunk chinese killing locals on Tuks or Motos, they just pay the police they dont give a fk and its give me a bad taste about Chinese that I didnt really realise I had so what BETTER way to challenge that than GO to China and meet them, The real peeps. Started as 2 weeks its now 4 and im hella excited. Anxious too. |

@hey. Cheers mate, Yeah I usually know better and its not like me at all but I realised with the Chinese I do have a tendency to think the worst (If sounds horrible even saying that) Just out of said times in Cambodia but basing a county of what? 1.4 billion because of some gansters and scum businessmen. Actually was reading about number 4s times getting rejected for her US visa despite being in the states 10 years and some of the shit the officials said to her and put her down cos she was chinese was shocking tbh, then covid hit etc and she got all that being Chinese in the states while teh world burned. It Touched me cos I love her and her music but then realised hold on...Im a fking hypocrite and in so inspired me to jump to China. Music hey.

07.25.23 | 'What is it that you do exactly'
Just Night shifts/Porter/Security in this hotel in Scotland. 6 nights a week so no time to do anything else. Only a small fee for accomadation and Ive been here that long I get the run of the place can do what the fk I want basically. Jobs EASY and ive never been a hardworker. So can save every penny (Minus vinyl : '( ) for 8 months and go wherever in winter because it closes. So dont even have to ask for time off.
The 4 months Im off first month they owe me a months ,second is holiday pay so basically a month. Then get a few hundred tax back the other 2 which covers bills while Im away. Then back and start again. I mean it can be scary , especially this trip. as you get older and you spend like 90% of your cash but Im kinda used to it now. It suits me and Im ok with it. |

07.25.23 | I hope you enjoy China, I'm planning to make my first trip there hopefully next year or 2025. The plan is to fly out to Hong Kong (cheapest flight location I can find) and use high-speed rail to visit Guangzhou, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Beijing, pending more cities to visit depending on the length of the trip. I've only been doing some light research, but from what I've seen and heard, Wuhan seems like a place that a lot of expats talk very highly of/their favorite city to visit. |

Dude the Phillipines is fking dope. Palawan is the most insanely beautuful like tropical island ive ever seen up El Nido one, unreal. I ended up on a lil island called Siquijor too for a week. The Fillipinos dont really go (or didnt) because of some witchcraft shit so was super quite. Stunning though. Could do the island in like 90 mins on a bike right round.
I have only been Tapei once to visit a friend in Jail haha That was wild trying to find it. Then he wanted me to get him a KFC so had to go get a KFC the day after and cut it into pieces to show there was no weapons in there etc. He was over the moon. |

07.25.23 | I've never been to China but just came back from a 3 week vacation to Japan a few weeks ago. Best holiday of my life so far (proposed to my gf there so it's gonna be hard to top lol). If you end up going I really advice going to Koyasan, a temple village about two hours by train from Osaka. Other then that Tokyo and Kyoto are obvious, and we ended up going into the Japanese Alps to Matsumoto which was very nice and a lot quieter then the big metropolises. Not as much to do but enough to fill a day or two and get a very different take on Japanese life. |
Deez
07.25.23 | Yooooo Congratulations man !!!
Koyasan will be noted and checked out cheers boss, Alps might be a lil to frosty as I'm only there in Feb. Going from cold ass china to high season Cambodia and back the colds gonna end me I think |

07.25.23 | I've been to Shanghai, Beijing, Wuhan, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
Had the time of my life in mainland China. English is not so common among mainland Chinese, but especially in Shanghai there are plenty of expats. In general I found the Chinese to be wonderful people; very friendly, welcoming and curious. Taxi drivers are a mixed bag though; some are very helpful and others are dicks, but I guess that's gonna be the case in any major city throughout the world.
In terms of nightlife I had the most fun in Shanghai, hands down. Lots of excellent clubs over there. Definitely don't skip on Bar Rouge, which is very expat heavy, but tons of cool people. Clubs like M2 and Myst on the other hand have more of a mix of expats and locals, but are also places where you're gonna have a great time with top people.
Wuhan was a city where I wouldn't stay for too long myself. There wasn't a ton to do over there, but it's definitely the most traditional "Chinese" big city.
As far as gangsters and shady people go...you're barely gonna find any of that in mainland China. Extremely law abiding people.
Hong Kong and Taiwan on the other hand...yeah tons and tons of gangsters and they don't even try to hide...but they basically never gonna bother you. Me and a friend of mine even got into quite a few talks with some Triad members - they are actually very open about being a member of a Triad since they more seem to be like shady community organizations on which there's some sort of policy of tolerance by law enforcement.
Basically everybody speaks English in Hong Kong and you're gonna find a ton of Brits, Irish and Australians over there as well. Including a ton of roided up blokes from for instance Southeast London/Essex/Kent, Liverpool, Glasgow, Nottingham and Dublin - who are all VERY prominent in the nightlife scene.
Extremely humid climate, especially in Hong Kong...I was totally unprepared for how humid it turned out to be.
Man...I'm getting teary eyed from nostalgia just thinking back about those times... |

07.25.23 | If it has four legs and isn’t a chair, has two wings and isn’t an aeroplane the Chinese will eat it. |

07.25.23 | Thal don't cry :(
Unfortunately won't be hitting Shanghai. I debated it but thought if I'm going guess I gotta go see the wall right? So flying into Beijing. I'll get my partying done in Cambodia then wrap back up for Japan . The more I've looked into China every says the people are great, I am ashamed to say that surprises me as I'd always thought I'd seen shit about rudeness, spitting everywhere etc etc. Never mind those troff toilets |
Thalassic
07.25.23 | Not gonna lie, the spitting everywhere is real...
As far as rudeness goes...only got that from some of the taxi drivers...the people in general were cool.
And the toilets weren't too bad. At their worst it's nothing you won't see at your average bar in Western Europe on Saturdays after people have been on day two of their binge drinking and being coked up to their eyeballs bender |
Deez
07.25.23 | I read about these troff toilets in the smaller places? I've used the drop holes in Asia in the past loads (actually shit In one which was a shower not a toilet once haha) but there like a leaning trough where you shit kinda down hill, sometime not even dividers there. My legs wouldn't be able to get down there esoecually with an 80 year old fella laughing at me |
Thalassic
07.25.23 | Lol tbh I haven't come across those toilets during my stay in China, but if I'm being fair I gotta admit I only traveled from big city to big city. I'm no real expert on what's going on in the countryside |
Deez
07.26.23 | How do you find navigate the train stations Thal?
Look like fking airports |
Scheumke
07.26.23 | Haha if you're worried about the toilets you're gonna have a blast in Japan. Their toilets are more high tech than most tv's lol. |
Deez
07.26.23 | Mate I can't WAIT to get one of those making hot water shoots right up my hoop |
Thalassic
07.26.23 | "How do you find navigate the train stations Thal?"
To be honest I didn't really have any issues with navigating through the public transport, whether it was a train or a metro station. They're definitely big, but it wasn't too bad in terms of being able to orientate yourself.
Public transport was extremely punctual. Compared to the public transport over here where I live it was actually a breath of fresh air lol |
Deez
07.26.23 | Cool cool, yeah its been a while since i was in a barely any english country so have an image of me just stood there looking at mandarin characters not having a clue where to go with about 5000 people buzzing around me. |
