| 90's Norwegian Black Metal classics
In no particular order.
EDIT:
Those 7 albums are for me the definition and the peak of the Norwegian 2nd wave of black metal.
It is of course predictable. While many people consider earlier albums to be "the cult ones" - I think these listed here are the pinnacle of the genre, hence they are "the classics". I'm listening to them very often, and I feel they have aged very well.
Some notable ommissions:
Darkthrone would definitely make the cult list, but I don't find myself coming back to it
Dimmu Borgir (Enthrone Darkness) - very important because of the impact on the scene (some would say not necessarily positive) - it would not feel very fair to the others in the list.
Immortal - Pure Holocaust - similarly to Darkthrone, I don't enjoy it anymore. At the Heart of Winter on the other hand, I listen to a lot and while I do consider it classic and rate it 5. However, I had huge doubts of putting it on this list. I feel it is a bit different proposition, resulting more from Immortal changing it style than growing into it like with others on the list.
Thorns - Thorns - 2001, sorry
Ulver - Bergatt - while it being a fantastic album, I feel it is a bit different proposition,a little bit outside of the scene at that time. | 1 | | Satyricon Nemesis Divina | 2 | | Mayhem De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas | 3 | | Burzum Hvis lyset tar oss | 4 | | Emperor In the Nightside Eclipse | 5 | | Emperor Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk | 6 | | Gorgoroth Under the Sign of Hell | 7 | | Limbonic Art In Abhorrence Dementia | |

03.03.17 | add Windir if you wanna be vaguely interesting/controversial. And Kvist! And then put in Thorns instead of Mayhem to be uber kr13g. | hal1ax

06.10.18 | I've just realised there is a commenting feature on the lists. This is fantastic and thank you all for sharing your opinions here.
For clarity, I've updated list decription with my argumentation on the choices (or, rather, ommissions) ;) | SCREAM!
06.10.18 | I guess I was in a bad mood the day you did this because I sound like a total dick up there
Sorry man my bad | Mentasm

06.12.18 | SCREAM! no worries buddy - it helped me realize that I should try to back up my opinion with some arguments. This list was definitely missing the reasoning why exactly these 7 were selected, and so I added it into description - I wouldn't without your comment there.
At the end of the day, there is always a personal and subjective aspect to all the lists (especially true about the music one was growing up 2 decades ago). |
