01.02.13 | Indie rock: Doing away with shallow lyrics about falling for boys/girls, the traditional conception of a good voice, and gimmicky electronics, most indie rock (exceptions exist) maintains the vocal-centric songwriting of pop music. Since I rarely give a damn about lyrics and actually prefer a more traditional singer, indie rock to me is just pop music with grating/weird/awkward vocals. |

I think you're narrowing it down to indie pop. |

01.02.13 | I actually enjoy Power Metal, very few bands though.
For me it's Metalcore. Absolutely hate the genre with a passion |
DamnVanne
01.02.13 | likely so; I would call Passion Pit and Florence + the Machine indie pop, and I have the same problem with those artists. |

Fine if you don't like these, but many would disagree with your description even if they'd put aside their musical subjectivity. But indie rock is one of the biggest genres there is, it's an umbrella term for so many types of rock music: emo, some post-hardcore, slowcore, folk rock, jangle pop, twee, dream pop, shoegaze,... the list goes on and on. So dismissing it based on the 0,0005 % of albums you dislike is quite of a stretch. |
bakkermaarten007
01.02.13 | And you're a Circa Survive and Minus The Bear fan. These two are indie rock broadly taken. |

I have a much more specific conception of indie rock than the blanket you put over those other genres. The only one of those I could mix with indie rock is folk rock. I try not to dismiss bands if the term(s) used to describe them are vague. 'Indie' does seem to be used more vaguely than I like to think of it, but only slightly |
DamnVanne
01.03.13 | Minus the Bear is totally an indie rock band, but I like them for all the same reasons I like any pop artist, and I love the math rock aspects of their music |
bakkermaarten007
01.03.13 | Well, we're not discussing the same thing then. If I'm not mistaken you dislike introspective lyrics and vocals that go off key sometimes and some synths. Well you should look more in alt rock then. Too bad 'cause when done right, indie rock (and more specifically emo) can be the best there is imo. |
DamnVanne
01.03.13 | normally I would say that I'm perfectly fine with introspective lyrics, but in the case of emo, it can get to be a little too much. Plus, my favorite things about music are complex instrumentals, climactic song structures and awesome electric guitar solos. If you know of any emo bands that incorporate any of those things, then lay it on me. |

YankeeDudel
01.03.13 | I like a handful of emo bands mainly for the instrumentation but I dont know why anybody wants to hear a vocalist on the verge of tears. |
