Why I Love Electronic Music (part 2)

HI GUYS! Here is part 2 of my ever on-going fascination with electronic music. It is overdue because university got in the way last semester. But I recently graduated. Yay! So let's celebrate. In the same vein of my first list, I have tried to include a decent variety of genres and periods: from pop things to more demanding records, from the 80's to the 2010's up until this year. To maintain a good balance between "obvious" and "overlooked". To add singles, EPs and lots of soundtracks because... why not. Some artists make a return, and several new ones appear. Hopefully it is better than part 1, but still as personal, since this is merely a representation of what I like and fancy. Let's get some discussion going as well. What are your favorite albums of 2014 so far? Tell me, I'm curious. Also, rec me techno, ambient and psytrance!

The Bones of What You Believe

A solid and infectious first album. Another proof (if it ever was needed) that
electronic pop is still in healthy form. Uplifting stuff with great choruses.

The Social Network

First up is Kirkland. They keep everything open and allow indexes in their Apache
configuration. So a little Wget magic is all that's necessary to download the entire
Kirkland facebook. Kids' stuff. Next is Eliot. They're also open, but with no indexes
on Apache. I can run an empty search and it returns all of the images in the
database in a single page. And I can save the page and Mozilla will save all the
images for me. Excellent. Moving right along. Lowell has some security. They require
a user name/password combo, and I'm gonna go ahead and say they don't have
access to the main FAS user database, so they have no way of detecting an
intrusion. Adams has no security, but limits the number of results to 20 a page. All I
need to do is break out the same script I used on Lowell and we're set. Quincy has
no online facebook. What a sham. Nothing I can do about that. Dunster is intense.
Not only is there no public directory, but there's no directory at all. You have to do
searches, and if your search returns more than 20 matches, nothing gets returned.
And once you do get results, they don't link directly to the images. They link to a
PHP that redirects or something. Weird. This may be difficult. I'll come back later.
Leverett is a little better. They still make you search, but you can do an empty
search and get links to pages with every student's picture. It's slightly obnoxious
that they only let you view one picture at a time, and there's no way I'm going to
go to 500 pages to download pics one at a time. So it's definitely necessary to
break out Emacs and modify that Perl script.

jeune DJ français, s'était donné pour mission de partir à la recherche des plus
étonnants gemmes oubliés de la house music. Il est même parfois allé demander la
permission, en personne, à des ex-DJ qui détenaient la clé de voûte d'un morceau
en particulier. Résultat : une compilation intitulée « My Love Is Underground »
recelant de petits bijoux surprenants de house, rétro certes mais surtout pas
ringarde. Saluez bien bas les grooves prestigieuses de Chicago! C'est mission
accomplie.

a queen giving birth to the heirs. I saw Kraftwerk in concert last Spring and they
were awesome as expected. Ralf Hütter still knows the name of the game when it
comes to live settings.

hole (or orbital hole like I said last time), In Sides is aerodynamic, smoother, more
clear-headed, winged as a bird, which shows how versatile Orbital were back then.

time I hear Voodoo Ray it's as if I can grasp the essence of those past raves.

Overlooked techno. RA gave it a 4.5 but it wasn't on their end-of-year list. Steven
Tang really took his time to craft the album (we're talking about years of work
here) and it shows. There is a timeless quality to it, for lack of a better word, and
it deserves more love. It might sound like understated at first, but give it some
time, the synth riffs will eventually get stuck in your head.

those things, but first, first and foremost, you just listen to this, especially the title
track.

Landmark album in drum & bass. Just a stone-cold classic from the golden era of
techstep. Get this if you are curious about the genre. For many people, Wormhole
is to drum & bass what Geogaddi is to IDM. While it has its flaws, there's no
denying how much influence this album has had. The best thing that has come out
from Virus Recordings. Also, Ed Rush looks like a guy I would totally hang out with.

If one were to make a top 3 of drum & bass artists, Calibre would have to be on the
podium. There's no way around it. He's been spearheading the scene for about 15
years now and shows no signs of fatigue. His catalogue is infinite and marvelous. It
turns out he also has a very accessible sound: luminous, gentle, liquid, soulful.
Please give this compilation a listen if you wish to bounce around to some rollers or
chill out to dubbed out beats.

House gamechanger from one of its oldest outfits. Gerald Simpson had already left
the band by then, but it was led by Graham Massey. We're talking about superb
house music that came at the dawn of the 90's, when the genre was still in its
infancy. Released in 1989! In a way, it announced and kickstarted the electronic
boom of the next decade with confidence.

Forgotten masterpiece from the 80's. I love Marc Almond's personality and
expressiveness, but it is Alan Ball's synth production that steals the show. Purple,
otherworldly, urban, slick, lustful. Give it a listen and you won't believe it was made
in 1981. There are tasty synth riffs & basslines all over the place. The song Youth
sounds like an avant-garde-black-celebration-god-tier song. As for Sex Dwarf,
well.......it is for you to discover but be prepared. And the finale Say Hello, Wave
Goodbye is a stirring ballad like no other.

personality. Absolute zeitgeist of late-90's techstep DnB. 'The Nine', their first
single, is still considered top 10 material ever. Regarded as pioneers (rightly so),
they no longer make music together nowadays. But their work will live on. Though
'Inside The Machine' is their most well-known album, Book Of The Bad is their

Dare!

Simply the poppiest album of all... but what a pop album it is. The New Wave
Lightbringer: luminous, joyful, expressive, infectious, celebratory but sometimes
ironic, enthralling, creative, smart, unashamed, androgynous, pure pop pop pop
pop: the perfect zeitgeist of its time. 1981 was an exceptional year for synth-
based music: Kraftwerk released "Computer World", OMD dropped "Architecture &
Morality", Soft Cell made "Erotic Cabaret", Depeche Mode's first album came around
- and then there was The Human League, going all killer no filler with great pop
vision in mind. The energy contained in this album still holds up easily and sets the
bar high. It anticipated so much of what is made today. Any modern electropop
outfit owes something to Dare. This is of course the album that contains Don't You
Want Me, an iconic song of the 80s, but fortunately it does not overshadow the
others: the anthemic Sound Of The Crowd and the grandiose Seconds in particular
are favorites of mine.
