Why I Love Electronic Music (part 2)

HI GUYS! Here is part 2 of my ever on-going fascination with electronic music. It is overdue because university got in the way last semester. But I recently graduated. Yay! So let's celebrate. In the same vein of my first list, I have tried to include a decent variety of genres and periods: from pop things to more demanding records, from the 80's to the 2010's up until this year. To maintain a good balance between "obvious" and "overlooked". To add singles, EPs and lots of soundtracks because... why not. Some artists make a return, and several new ones appear. Hopefully it is better than part 1, but still as personal, since this is merely a representation of what I like and fancy. Let's get some discussion going as well. What are your favorite albums of 2014 so far? Tell me, I'm curious. Also, rec me techno, ambient and psytrance!

The Bones of What You Believe

A solid and infectious first album. Another proof (if it ever was needed) that
electronic pop is still in healthy form. Uplifting stuff with great choruses.

The Social Network

First up is Kirkland. They keep everything open and allow indexes in their Apache
configuration. So a little Wget magic is all that's necessary to download the entire
Kirkland facebook. Kids' stuff. Next is Eliot. They're also open, but with no indexes
on Apache. I can run an empty search and it returns all of the images in the
database in a single page. And I can save the page and Mozilla will save all the
images for me. Excellent. Moving right along. Lowell has some security. They require
a user name/password combo, and I'm gonna go ahead and say they don't have
access to the main FAS user database, so they have no way of detecting an
intrusion. Adams has no security, but limits the number of results to 20 a page. All I
need to do is break out the same script I used on Lowell and we're set. Quincy has
no online facebook. What a sham. Nothing I can do about that. Dunster is intense.
Not only is there no public directory, but there's no directory at all. You have to do
searches, and if your search returns more than 20 matches, nothing gets returned.
And once you do get results, they don't link directly to the images. They link to a
PHP that redirects or something. Weird. This may be difficult. I'll come back later.
Leverett is a little better. They still make you search, but you can do an empty
search and get links to pages with every student's picture. It's slightly obnoxious
that they only let you view one picture at a time, and there's no way I'm going to
go to 500 pages to download pics one at a time. So it's definitely necessary to
break out Emacs and modify that Perl script.

96Ten Walls
Gotham

Infectious house anthem from last year. Need I say more?
95Lenzman
Looking At The Stars

Decent AOTY contender in drum & bass. Lenzman, one of Goldie's "protégés", drops
his excellent debut album on the prestigious Metalheadz label.
94Astral Projection
Dancing Galaxy

I'm still a psytrance beginner so feel free to rec me some more in the comment
section. Loving this! Bye.
93Gorillaz
Plastic Beach

Fun, catchy, exotic, humorous, banana juice, strawberry juice, raisin juice. With
sweeping instrumentals and creative collabs like this, count me in!
92Ratatat
LP3

My favorite Ratatat album.
91ASC
Truth Be Told

A great follow-up to THA with magnificent tracks as expected. My favorites: The
Machinery Of Night (consolation). Lucent Vessel (mystery). The Certainty Of Tides
(infinity). Noble ambient sculptures.
90Jon Convex
Idoru

Inspired by a science fiction & cyberpunk novel called "Idoru". Given how good the
music is, I would love to read it. Tech house for insomniacs and the likes.

88Jeremy Underground Paris
My Love Is Underground

Résultat : une compilation intitulée « My Love Is Underground »
recelant de petits bijoux surprenants de house, rétro certes mais surtout pas
ringarde. Saluez bien bas les grooves prestigieuses de Chicago! C'est mission
accomplie.
87Kraftwerk
Computer World

Computer World helped spawn Aphex Twin & Autechre. How cool is that? That's like
a queen giving birth to the heirs. I saw Kraftwerk in concert last Spring and they
were awesome as expected. Ralf Hütter still knows the name of the game when it
comes to live settings.
86Soundtrack
Trainspotting: Music from the Motion Picture

Now I've justified this to myself in all sorts of ways. It wasn't a big deal, just a
minor betrayal. Or we'd outgrown each other, you know, that sort of thing. But let's
face it, I ripped them off - my so called mates. But Begbie, I couldn't give a shit
about him. And Sick Boy, well he'd done the same to me, if he'd only thought of it
first. And Spud, well okay, I felt sorry for Spud - he never hurt anybody. So why
did I do it? I could offer a million answers - all false. The truth is that I'm a bad
person. But, that's gonna change - I'm going to change. This is the last of that sort
of thing. Now I'm cleaning up and I'm moving on, going straight and choosing life.
I'm looking forward to it already. I'm gonna be just like you. The job, the family, the
fucking big television. The washing machine, the car, the compact disc and electric
tin opener, good health, low cholesterol, dental insurance, mortgage, starter home,
leisure wear, luggage, three piece suite, DIY, game shows, junk food, children,
walks in the park, nine to five, good at golf, washing the car, choice of sweaters,
family Christmas, indexed pension, tax exemption, clearing gutters, getting by,
looking ahead, the day you die.

Primitive techno in a black hole for the ages. Rarely has a bassline so eagerly
enveloped its listeners.

An astonishing mix of techno, garage, ambient, and Russian vibes. Winter album in a
very good way: I was listening to this on repeat last December. Winters in Quebec
are bloody cold sometimes. Last one was bloody cold anyways. Shout-out to

I simply cannot wait for Joy O's debut album.....if he ever releases one that is. But

groundbreaking singles & collabs.

YEAH O_____O!!!! YEAH O_____O!!!! YEAH O_____O!!!! Musical drug straight out

Gesloten Cirkel is a necromancer who raises the dead because his music is so heavy
and stormy. Heroes Of Might And Magic: Necropolis: Gesloten The Producer: Level
23.
78Orbital
In Sides

Colourful techno at its peak. The Hartnoll Brothers doing what they do best: expand
the intellect of their listeners. While The Brown Album is a plunge into the rabbit
hole (or orbital hole like I said last time), In Sides is aerodynamic, smoother, more
clear-headed, winged as a bird, which shows how versatile Orbital were back then.
77Letherette
Letherette

Overlooked house album from last year that deserves way more love than it has
right now. Slick, tasty, glimmering. Some French Frog reviewed it.
76Todd Terje
It's Album Time

Okay boys & girls, It's About Time we dance and chew bubble gum! Todd Terje is
set to conquer the world with this delicious slice of disco-house-electro. I love his
playful mindset. Inspector Norse is my favorite song: it tickles my fancy way, way
too much. Shout-out to Will Robinson for reviewing this when it came out.

74Fluke
Risotto

Atom Bomb is one of the Big Three Of Big Beat (along with Block Rockin' Beats and
Right Here, Right Now). But Risotto isn't all about Atom Bomb, or the opening
Absurd for that matter. It is a little bit of everything (techno, breakbeat,
downtempo), and a welcome addition to the catalogue. Shout-out to
SanguineCream if he's still around!
73Fischerspooner
Emerge

Raw, expeditious, fiery, artistic sing-along anthem for the clubs. Forget about
Calvin Harris or Martin Garrix crap: Emerge keeps the club spirit alive.
72Dom and Roland
No Strings Attached

Ahhhhhhhhh, Dom & Roland. The heavyweight & apocalyptic counterpart to Calibre.
Much less accessible, but always consistent, always bigger-than-life. This album
has collabs with Noisia & Amon Tobin among others. Enough said.
71Floorplan
Paradise

Robert Hood: "Definitely, it's very, very deliberate?it's laser-point deliberate. You
will live, you are a powerful, creative, unstoppable man of God. You were designed
to do great things. But a lot of people go to the grave not knowing that, not
realizing their dreams and their visions, having them manifested and come to pass.
And so it's this message: not only can you survive, but you can thrive in this world,
you can live an abundant life, that's God's plan, that's his will for us. And so no
more do we need to get depressed or worried or live in fear?fear of what? So there
is nothing I can't do in techno. You are looking at a water-walker, you are looking
at a dude who can defy gravity. So again, like Mojo said, "There ain't nobody bad
like you"?hey, that's me! He's talking about me! And he's talking about you. So it's
a beautiful thing. It's a beautiful thing."
70A Guy Called Gerald
Voodoo Ray

Legendary acid house from Gerald. Do "Like" Gerald on Facebook, he often posts
funny or thoughtful stuff. I was born in 1992 in the land of mooses, igloos and
maple sugar, far far away from the 90's raves of the old tales. Yet, each and every
time I hear Voodoo Ray it's as if I can grasp the essence of those past raves.
69Steven Tang
Disconnect To Connect

Overlooked techno. RA gave it a 4.5 but it wasn't on their end-of-year list. Steven
Tang really took his time to craft the album (we're talking about years of work
here) and it shows. There is a timeless quality to it, for lack of a better word, and
it deserves more love. It might sound like understated at first, but give it some
time, the synth riffs will eventually get stuck in your head.
68Guido

Charming, ingenuous, painted, dreamy dubstep for your hobbies at home or outside.
67Air
Moon Safari

66John Talabot
Fin

Steamy house album for when life is good. In fact it's everything house should ever
be: warm, wet, tribal, soulful, light, expressive. Never-ending grooves will keep me
awake. Thumbs up for a tropical dancefloor!
65Big Bud
Late Night Blues

Tribal, exotic, spacey, food, drinks, warmth.

Tunnels. Mazes. Holes. ASC explores new boundaries with genres. I am Eloriapheus.
You take the blue pill: you do not listen to this album. You take the red pill....and

63High Contrast
Confidential

High Contrast is the ABBA of drum & bass, the Pet Shop Boy of liquid funk. From my
point of view, that's a hell of a great thing. One of the two figureheads of Hospital
Records (the other being label-founder London Elektricity).
62Koji Kondo

This is one of the most danceable drum & bass records you will ever hear. Summer.
More summer. And more summer. Jump in the swimming pool. Dance your socks off
to the delicious liquid bass, as if no one were watching you.
60Pet Shop Boys
Electric

What can I say? It's been 30 years and the Boys still have it. Whereas veterans like
BT and The Crystal Method have sunk into mediocre EDM standards on their last
respective albums (whyyyyyy), Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe keep making
interesting dance music for the masses (teaming up this time with producer Stuart
Price). Love Is A Bourgeois Construct is up there with the best. What a song.
Granted it's no West End Girls or It's A Sin, but it's a thrilling house smash that
samples work from Henry Purcell! No joke. Neil Tennant is 60. How many 60 year-old
men make thrilling house smashes? https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Spiral Power be the soundtrack to all of this. Shout-out to Rev for this splendid
album, it resonated with me.
54Amon Tobin
Bricolage

I just love the way Tobin plays with drums to create patterns of his own. Bricolage
(true to its namesake) is a lush, dense, brooding odyssey, barely accessible but
ultimately rewarding. Between D&B and IDM. Brimming with unearthly landscapes. It
is a testament to the powerful imagination of Tobin. Electronic scrapbooking at its
finest. Shout-out to Clercqie who loves this album.
53Jon Hopkins
Immunity

Impressive album from an absurdly talented producer. Easily one of the most
memorable LPs of 2013. I would have loved the second part to be a little more
engaging, but it's just a minor flaw. An admirable cathedral for electrojunkies, of
which Collider is the centerpiece.
52Teebee

Epic early neurofunk for windy nights and autumn temperatures. Very atmospheric
and very crisp. Silent Depths will light a candle in your mind. Severed Dreams will
lubricate it. Whole album will twist it upside down.

Matter Plus Form

Futurepop is essentially EBM with poppier inclinations. That's the most simple
definition I can give. Big club-ready beats with personality. Ronan Harris is brilliant
not because he is a technically perfect singer, but because he gives a
performance, he's really into his own words, and I admire that. Bloc loves this album
(hi Bloc!). Listen to Perpetual for a great futurepop song:

Radio-Activity

Imagine you're a science fiction fan. Imagine you're also an electronic music fan.
You then wonder: how do I make the most out of these two interests? The first
thing you do is you get yourself a copy of this album. After that, well, I mean, you
watch Blade Runner, listen to some Autechre and Orbital, etc. etc., you know, all
those things, but first, first and foremost, you just listen to this, especially the title
track.
43Ed Rush and Optical
Wormhole

Landmark album in drum & bass. Just a stone-cold classic from the golden era of
techstep. Get this if you are curious about the genre. For many people, Wormhole
is to drum & bass what Geogaddi is to IDM. While it has its flaws, there's no
denying how much influence this album has had. The best thing that has come out
from Virus Recordings. Also, Ed Rush looks like a guy I would totally hang out with.
42Nuclear Ramjet
Mission To Sedna

Psytrance from Quebec. Yeahhh! Forgotten gem from my homeland. No one knows

Devcore album basically. Incredibly diverse drum & bass; not a single track sounds
like another. You have everything on this: liquid, neurofunk, atmosphere, bangers,
dubstep halfstep godstep, gigantic galloping rollers that would make you dance all
night and morph into an Intelligent Dance Human. Fiery basslines that will change
your life, especially on Bipolar, Battlefish and The Relieve. It's just spectacular. And
accessible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hOR1Huhivs

34Calibre
Shelflife Vol. 2

If one were to make a top 3 of drum & bass artists, Calibre would have to be on the
podium. There's no way around it. He's been spearheading the scene for about 15
years now and shows no signs of fatigue. His catalogue is infinite and marvelous. It
turns out he also has a very accessible sound: luminous, gentle, liquid, soulful.
Please give this compilation a listen if you wish to bounce around to some rollers or
chill out to dubbed out beats.

House gamechanger from one of its oldest outfits. Gerald Simpson had already left
the band by then, but it was led by Graham Massey. We're talking about superb

infancy. Released in 1989! In a way, it announced and kickstarted the electronic
boom of the next decade with confidence.

28Soft Cell
Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret

Forgotten masterpiece from the 80's. I love Marc Almond's personality and
expressiveness, but it is Alan Ball's synth production that steals the show. Purple,
otherworldly, urban, slick, lustful. Give it a listen and you won't believe it was made
in 1981. There are tasty synth riffs & basslines all over the place. The song Youth
sounds like an avant-garde-black-celebration-god-tier song. As for Sex Dwarf,
well.......it is for you to discover but be prepared. And the finale Say Hello, Wave
Goodbye is a stirring ballad like no other.

Synth laboratory finds OMD at their experimental peak. Visionary work. Concept
album about technology, the future, and what they hold for humanity. In fact it's
probably the most experimental synthpop album ever made, which explains why it
was a commercial failure back in the 80's. Spiritual cousin of "Radio-Activity".
Steampunk vibes. Andy McCluskey & Paul Humphreys are magicians. If you're the

that's not a reason, right? So why? Nick Rhodes' glimmering synth lines are why.
Ohhhhh okay, okay. The only song here that is more "synthpop" than "pop rock" is
The Chauffeur though. My name is Eloriaz and I'm dancing on the sand!

Donkey Kong Country 2 Soundtrack

No, you have to get that barrel before crossing the bridge, or else the guy is gonna
throw you in the lava. Yep that's it. No no, go above it. Watch out for the bees
there. Yep. Careful. WAIT. Careful. Yeah kill him also. Good, okay. CAREFUL. Go
below. I think you're halfway there now. Get the coin. Nice! Good job! Okay. Uh-
huh. Just run it's almost finished. There you go. https://www.youtube.com/watch?

19Big Bud
Infinity Plus Infinity

Are you looking for blue thick atmosphere-soaked drum & bass? Yes? Excellent! Big
Bud's first album will please you I promise. Right this way. Fasten your seatbelt and
safe travels.
18Jean Michel Jarre
Oxygene

Machine Love

2001: A Space Odyssey. Alien. Blade Runner. Solaris. Close Encounters Of The Third
Kind. Planet Of The Apes. A Clockwork Orange. The Empire Strikes Back. 12
Monkeys. The Matrix. Starship Troopers. Gattaca. Jurassic Park. Moon. District 9.
16Calibre
Musique Concrete

Calibre's first album surely resembles a compilation (tracks chosen by DJ Fabio), but
it is no less a cohesive work that still provides the best overview of Dominick
Martin's talent. A seminal bridge between soulful jungle of the mid-90's & modern
liquid drum & bass.
15Venetian Snares
Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett

Exciting. Crazy. Genius. Breakcore meets classical music, as a matter of fact, what
more could you ask for? This should totally play at the Jardins De Versailles if you
please! Unbelievable music. It's like some bored composer started smashing around
violins and pianos to make some noise, just for kicks and giggles, and find out if it's
good or not. Well, it's damn good yeah!

Forever engraved in my mind because of this: http://atinyglimpse.ytmnd.com/

The Trumpets Of BoC call me. Knowledge & the Unknown. The Trumpets Of BoC call
me. I want to swim and dive into the Aquarius. The Trumpets Of BoC call me. The
Great Pavilions will welcome my soul. The Trumpets Of BoC call me. One Very
Important Though. The Trumpets Of BoC call me. I am no stranger to this land of

12Jeff Mills
Sequence (A Retrospective Of Axis Records)

Or Why I Have A Crush On Jeff Mills. Techno philosopher, techno wizard, techno
prophet, techno astronaut, techno king etc.
11Terrence Dixon
From The Far Future - Part 2

Minimal Techno Odyssey From The Far Future Indeed!!! Through a brooding 4x4
pulse that does not let go, Terrence Dixon takes you on a diverse trip of ghostlands
and underworlds. Black And White. How to build and release tension. Try not to
move your feet or your head when Horizon or Navigate play. Dark City Of Hope and
Lead By Example are truly haunting tracks.
10Bad Company UK
Book Of The Bad

Bad Company UK were a near-legendary drum & bass collective (or "supergroup")
that consisted of 4 members: DJ Fresh (who went horribly commercial), Maldini,
Vegas (who both run Bad Taste Recordings), and last but not least dBridge (does
that name ring a bell? he's the chief of Exit Records). Their music had so much
personality. Absolute zeitgeist of late-90's techstep DnB. 'The Nine', their first
single, is still considered top 10 material ever. Regarded as pioneers (rightly so),
they no longer make music together nowadays. But their work will live on. Though
'Inside The Machine' is their most well-known album, Book Of The Bad is their
masterpiece. Dust whirlwinds, percussion earthquakes, galloping tracks, this should
be in every list of most important D&B albums. https://www.youtube.com/watch?

9The Orb
Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld

Taking a stroll on the high bridges of the Universe. Walking on planets. Building
Spanish Castles because it is good to dream. Absolute masterpiece. Perpetual Dawn
PERPETUAL DAWN!
8Autechre
Amber

Awakening. Renaissance. Apocalypse. Autechre's Amber takes you through all kinds
of feelings: curiosity, awe, tranquility, solemnity, grandeur. All cycles of the
universe are covered. IMMENSE TEARTEAR. Starry sounds from one of electronic
music's most prestigious duo's. Shout-out to staff member Hyperion because that's
his favorite album.

Time Heals All

Does God exist? Is there life after death? Where are we heading? What is Dark
Matter? How is the Universe expanding? If God exists then how do we explain evil?
Why is there something rather than nothing? So Many Questions Indeed. What if,
what if, what if? Why haven't we heard from alien life Fermi Paradox Fermi Paradox?
Where is the Holy Grail? Why are there raining frogs at the end of Paul Thomas
Anderson's Magnolia? Past present future. Are We On The Same Wavelength?
6Kraftwerk
The Man-Machine

Wizards in red with magic spells operating the grand synthesis. The Ultimate Empire
Of Bleeps And Bloops. There's no way out of it. The Model is the best thing in
existence and its "melody bridges" are the best moments in music.
5The Knife
Silent Shout

I am madly in love with this. That's all I have to say.
4Hybrid (UK)
Wide Angle

Absolute watershed & triumph of breakbeats. I know few albums as exhilarating as
this one. It has the scope of an opera. What an adventure from If I Survive to
Finished Symphony! Shout-out to Mindle because....I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!

1The Human League
Dare!

Simply the poppiest album of all... but what a pop album it is. The New Wave
Lightbringer: luminous, joyful, expressive, infectious, celebratory but sometimes
ironic, enthralling, creative, smart, unashamed, androgynous, pure pop pop pop
pop: the perfect zeitgeist of its time. 1981 was an exceptional year for synth-
based music: Kraftwerk released "Computer World", OMD dropped "Architecture &
Morality", Soft Cell made "Erotic Cabaret", Depeche Mode's first album came around
- and then there was The Human League, going all killer no filler with great pop
vision in mind. The energy contained in this album still holds up easily and sets the
bar high. It anticipated so much of what is made today. Any modern electropop
outfit owes something to Dare. This is of course the album that contains Don't You
Want Me, an iconic song of the 80s, but fortunately it does not overshadow the
others: the anthemic Sound Of The Crowd and the grandiose Seconds in particular
are favorites of mine.
