10.05.19 | if i'm concerned about anything it's that critics seems to have forgotten that "fiction" exists in order to fit a milieu that insists on abject statements in Art, and that representation =/= endorsement. like, it's not complex. i'm not sure if there are nuances to be parsed in the film, as much as i enjoyed it, but if there are the focus is shit-sure on the wrong ones |
Intothepit
10.05.19 | So.... Let me say first off that Joaquin put in the performance of a lifetime. He was absolutely incredible. That being said, the movie itself was extremely underwhelming. As a character study, this failed on epic proportions. I understand that this is the Joker and there isn't anything pretty about who he is and what he is about. There's not a question there. What upsets me is it almost glorifies vengeance and victim culture. Just like every single one of his movies, Phillips (why in the fuck is the director of The Hangover Trilogy and Old School directing this?!?!) lacks any nuance in his direction. It's all blunt force. No subtlety. The Joker is a much more complex character than this. They completely screwed this up. |

10.06.19 | I dunno the scene where he kills randall was p funny tbh |
samwise2000
10.06.19 | I really enjoyed this, way more than I was expecting to. I feel like the film almost gets in your head while your watching, as if you are looking at everything through Joker's eyes. It reminds me of something like American Psycho, where you are following an unreliable narrator and his ideals seep their way into the storytelling, twisting the way we perceive the plot. Really interesting, and im sure the theories surrounding the film are going to be a debate online for quite some time. The Scorsese influences were pretty clear, but I feel like Todd Phillips used a distinct enough style that the similarities weren't distracting |
Intothepit
10.06.19 | Yeah I laughed at that, mainly because of the stupidity of Randall and Gary showing up at his apartment. |

10.06.19 | "I couldn't care less about the idiotic politics surrounding the film. I just think it's an awful movie with a lead that almost single-handedly saved it from the trash heap"

Also Joker origin stories always tend to suck. He's a better character when you don't know his origins. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | @samwise the problem is that the film needed to remind you that he was an unreliable narrator every 10 minutes instead of letting you figure it out like with American psycho |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | So yeah, I agree about lacking subtlety . Also agreed that it was jarring and nonsensical having randall show up at his apartment |

10.06.19 | absolutely agree pots. and their cultish fearmongering and demonization of it began to pump the very publicity around that kind of act that might've attracted the very thing they were afraid of. like they built hype through fanatical negation of something that just wasn't there to begin with. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | @pit haha but even in marvel films a lot of the instances are by humans, right off the top of my head i can think of two instances where human ass white dudes plant bombs or start grenading public spaces - the crossbones/scarlet witch scene, and the scene where black panthers dad gets blown up |
CaliggyJack
10.06.19 | These journalist only have whatever opinions Disney pays them to have |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | "and their cultish fearmongering and demonization of it began to pump the very publicity around that kind of act that might've attracted the very thing they were afraid of"
fucking exactly. its a tired trope, people fear-mongering possible future acts to the point of causing those acts to become a tangible reality. in fact comic books do shit like that all the time! "THE PROPHECY SAYS THIS DUDE GONNA KILL SOME PEEPS. SHOULD WE MURDER HIM BEFORE HE CAN MAYBE DO A THING?" |
CaliggyJack
10.06.19 | Minority Report basically predicted this entire culture of "Get them before they can potentially do a thing they haven't done yet." |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | @caliggy a lot of them don't need to be paid to hop right on the circuit, the social status of being an edge-lord self-righteous twat is enough |
CaliggyJack
10.06.19 | "a lot of them don't need to be paid to hop right on the circuit, the social status of being an edge-lord self-righteous twat is enough"
What do you think the ratio is of self-righteous twat or paid Disney shill? Imma go 70-30 |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | 90-10 tbh, disney is cheap and efficient and i think they know they only have to feed a couple aptly placed integrity-bankrupt "journalists" to get the whole thing swiftly into motion by its own self-perpetuation |

Also DC comics is superior to Marvel in almost anything. Unpopular opinion but Marvel's heroes and villains always sucked. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | i think its more like being a vegetable kept on life support for a decade of pure misery vs filming yourself jumping off a tall building and trying to shoot yourself in the face before you hit the ground |

Intothepit
10.06.19 | Well, a lot of Marvel characters are based on or ripped off of DC |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | @caliggy in terms of comics, in that avengers and justice league are parallels, i agree dc heroes and villains are better, however i do love a lot of the x-men and their villains. |
CaliggyJack
10.06.19 | @Lorde X-Men 2 and Spider-Man 2 are two of the greatest superhero films ever made so it's not like I think they can't do anything good. I will admit though I am much easier to please watching a DC movie than I am watching a Marvel one. I was always a DC diehard. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | in general the best x-characters rival a lot of dc's best characters, spidey also has some classic villains as well that rival the best of dc, but marvels mainline avengers heroes and villains are fucking garbage.
oh and also DOC DOOM is one of the best villains ever |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | yeah im just strictly speaking comics-wise rn ftr |
CaliggyJack
10.06.19 | Yeah I feel you. Doc Doom is awesome. I can't stand the Fantastic Four but I love him funny enough.
tbh though I unironically enjoyed Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | oh yeah the fantastic four are all garbage but doom is a goddamn ledge. silver surfer is great too, that trippy ass cartoon about him was amazing |
CaliggyJack
10.06.19 | I laughed watching everyone's reactions to Sony cutting off with Disney over Spider-Man. The amount of people who wanted Disney to monopolize all of Marvel and chastised Sony for not letting Disney kick them in the dick repeatedly had me agape |

10.06.19 | Unlike most people I know, I thought Logan was pretty great. Edit |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | people have been talking about how marv-sney should pander-pander and make magneto black in their inevitable reboot - which is retarded given how intrinsic magneto's heritage is to his character - but i say if they want to make an actually good ethno-pander they should just make DOOM black in honour of MF. Gangster Doom has done absolutely nothing but solidify actual doc doom as a legendary comic villain and they could still have him overthrow and rule latveria |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | "Unlike most people, I thought Logan was pretty great."
pretty much everyone i know agrees logan is one of the best comic book movies so i dunno bout that |
CaliggyJack
10.06.19 | Funny enough I hate Marvel's obsessive diversity changes to Marvel characters but the one diversity change I would've liked (Miles Morales) they fucking stick into an animated movie instead.
Yeah Logan is one of the best Western's ever made agreed |

10.06.19 | tbf enter spider-verse was the best thing marvel OR sony have ever done superhero-wise |

10.06.19 | Back to joker tho, another problem I had was that I feel like I saw the entire movie just through the trailers. |
CosmicPie
10.06.19 | I was wondering about that. I remember seeing the trailers and not picking up on any interesting plot. Still haven't seen it yet, but usually a good trailer pulls me in... This one left me dry. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | I loved the trailers. It's just that they showed the entire film. |
hal1ax
10.06.19 | "I feel like I saw the entire movie just through the trailers."
absolutely agree. so many scenes in that film were just superfluous in that they simply double-downed on character building devices and motifs. it was just really bereft of nuance and depth. as pit mentioned earlier, the joker is so much more than a concatenation of woeful moments. |
hal1ax
10.06.19 | and idk how shared this critique is but i felt like the flimsy shreds of social commentary that the film did make were super heavy-handed. the few scenes where societies mishandling of mental health services are conveyed were just like 'uhh the funding has been cut... uhh you'll have to get your 27 prescriptions elsewhere. the establishment hates you. bye." |
Intothepit
10.06.19 | I love the positive hyperbole surrounding this Trainwreck of a film. "Best movie of the year!". Get the fuck out of here lol |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.06.19 | Yeah definitely not |
CosmicPie
10.06.19 | I thought the trailer sucked, haha. I wasn't interested in seeing the movie until hearing all the hype. |
Intothepit
10.06.19 | I can think of at least 4 movies off the top of my head this year that were better |
rabidfish
10.06.19 | I think it's more healthy to tell people the truth that the establishment does in fact, hate you, than live in this fantasy land where everyone is integrated, there's no racism or sexism and all those shitty things the establishment has done are forgotten or downright erased from history. |
CosmicPie
10.07.19 | I doubt it's hatred. More like a necessity of the farm. Do you hate the cow, deer or duck? Nah, you just want to make sure they don't become smart enough to evade you. |
hal1ax
10.07.19 | i wasn't implying that a sanitization of reality would've been better. my point was that the critique of that issue was delimited to 1-2 clunky scenes that seemed accelerated in their criticisms. like they were just trying to speed over it in the form of a trite little synopsis so they could dive back into the incessant, ham-fisted procession of tragedy-porn |
Faraudo
10.07.19 | "I can think of at least 4 movies off the top of my head this year that were better"
U're awesome, man.

Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.07.19 | Anyone who thinks joker is all that dangerous and violent should be forced to watch The House That Jack Built |
Lucman
10.07.19 | Just saw this and I honestly feel a little sick. I felt so much emotional pain and heartbreak over a character that I never really cared for before. The way people treat each other, idolize the powerful and scoff at the poor, the ill, and the rejected and how that can affect someone. SPOILER: the part the really hit me was when he was standing before Thomas Wayne wanting nothing more than to feel loved and accepted and got pushed aside even then. And then there is that gut-wrenching final act. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.07.19 | I liked it yeah but it's very hard to watch |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
10.07.19 | I kind of wish joker was more of a combination of american psycho and the house that jack built, then it might have at least been worth a fraction of the outrage |
EyesWideShut
10.07.19 | Anyone seen Ad Astra ? dont know if ill see that or Joker.. hmm.. |
Lucman
10.07.19 | Yeah, it's a slog with a story that borders on outrageous. I'd say skip it. |

10.07.19 | ad astra is ok. nothing amazing but worth watching once i guess |

10.07.19 | I'd say that Winter Soldier is the best Marvel Movie. |

10.07.19 | Ad Astra was excellent and one of the few movies I remember more fondly the more I think about it |
Faraudo
10.07.19 | Now it turns out that everyone around here hates it, how surprising.
Movie is not the best of the year by any means (Especially with movies like Parasite being released) but I think its compelling, well shot and amazingly acted. I even saw a comment slanting on Joaquin's performance lmao, the only thing that I regard as "perfect" on this proyect. |
DrGonzo1937
10.07.19 | I do. And I still think it’s the year’s best. |
Faraudo
10.07.19 | I would definitely put it in my top 3 (so far), that's for sure. |
DoofDoof
10.19.19 | One of the better ‘origins of a comic book character’ films tbh - liked it |
Larkinhill
10.19.19 | I think it’s best of the year so far, but we still have The Lighthouse, Parasite and The Irishman coming.
@eyeswideshut — Ad Astra was pretty solid but this is better. |
TheSpaceMan
10.19.19 | One of the things that really bothered me as soon as it was revealed was the love interest arc conclusion, felt like a ham fisted twist.
Honestly never thought about it until pots brought it up, but the flashbacks showing him without the love interest is what ruined it. Remove those and it's a much more brilliantly done unreliable narrator scenario where you feel him not knowing what's real and what's in his head and what's society actively fucking with him.
|
TheSpaceMan
10.19.19 | Same with the hospital docs now that I think about it. If he never got those, it woulda been so much more a path of insanity where he doesn't have a truth and its fucking with him. |
DoofDoof
10.19.19 | I enjoyed 'Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood' more than this but this was surprisingly good. I went in expecting to hate it. |
hal1ax
10.19.19 | damn lol I had the opposite experience. i went in expecting to like it and was super disappointed |
Larkinhill
10.19.19 | Ya know doof, gotta say I agree re Hollywood. But this has def been my 2nd fav thus far. |
Trebor.
10.19.19 | "but the flashbacks showing him without the love interest is what ruined it."
you have to make sure the popcorn munchers' baby brains understand what's going on |
DoofDoof
10.19.19 | The trailer didn’t sell me on it, the average review score on metacritic had me fearing the worst, and my buddy (who admittedly has awful taste in films) said the film was JP trying to artistically slo mo dance to an Oscar.
I dunno, it was pretty much the angle I would have gone down to show the Joker with realistic-ish origins and a few ‘current themes’.
Particularly critique along the lines of ‘Taxi Driver did it first!’ is just hating for the sake of it. It’s fine. |
CosmicPie
10.20.19 | Will check. Thanks. |
Intothepit
10.20.19 | The movie does treat it's viewers as if they're a bunch of brainless sheep.
Probably the reason why Larkinhill loves this pile of shit. It caters to his low IQ. |
hal1ax
10.20.19 | i mean if this movie aped taxi driver better i might've actually liked it. instead, it lunged toward the taxi driver ethos while leaving behind all of taxi driver's nuance, complexity, and irony. |
GhandhiLion
10.20.19 | So it's still capeshit at the end of the day? Got it. I'll wait for Knives Out. |

10.20.19 | Yeah I have heard it is good from people who dont usually like hero films. |
Intothepit
10.20.19 | Either you don't know what xenophobia is, or you're seeing something in the film that isn't there |

10.20.19 | Y’all dorks just need to watch Parasite and get over this garbage already |

Slex
10.20.19 | @Ghandi it’s pretty easy to find an HD version online! 123movies is what I used |
Intothepit
10.20.19 | You still have yet to establish how anything that has to do with the movie is "xenophobic.". I think you need to look up the definition. |
GhandhiLion
10.20.19 | "similar to the protection of the alt-right by mainstream media"
Huh |
Intothepit
10.20.19 | There isn't a single attempt to "humanise alt-right xenophobia." Lol. Just admit you're pulling bullshit out of your ass. It's ok. |
Intothepit
10.20.19 | What you described isn't xenophobia whatsoever. What you described is classism. If you replaced xenophobia with classism, I might see your point of view, but instead you're making this wild statement that doesn't make any sense in the context of the movie. |
Intothepit
10.20.19 | And that's still not xenophobia lol |
Intothepit
10.20.19 | So what you're now saying is that you're going to just throw a bunch of wild statements at it and hope they stick. Got it. |
Intothepit
10.20.19 | No, xenophobia is prejudice or hatred towards people of other countries. Try again. |
