| Rec Me No-bs Rock
Although I grew up loving - and still do love - big long songs and progressive
music and 'soundscapes' and all that, this is a day and age where life is busy and I
have neither the time nor patience to sit through 15 minute songs and listen to
something twenty times to 'get' it on any sort of regular basis. This type of music
certainly still holds it's place in my heart but as of late I've found myself wanting
more simple, perfectly crafted, no bullshit, actual songs. I use the term 'rock'
lightly here, I'll settle for anything that (not just by being loud or 'heavy') grabs
you by the balls in some way or another but lets go quick enough that you don't
forget that it's grabbing your balls in the first place. Any style will do, as long as it
isn't shit, really - list will give you ideas of what I'm listening to at the moment.
There's definitely an art to condensing a musical idea into four or five minutes of
pure musical release without sacrificing any of the original concept to do so. | 1 | | The War on Drugs Lost in the Dream
'Red Eyes' - This is what I mean. Five minutes of pure, no bullshit, songwriting. Everything is
placed perfectly. Not to mention it's just so damn fun. | 2 | | Matthew Good Live at Massey Hall
'I'm a Window' - Purely for the lyric "Don't fuck the princess/Fuck the maid." Stupid in the
cleverest kind of way. | 3 | | Gary Clark Jr. Blak and Blu
'Bright Lights' - Thick and sleazy and bluesy and just plain awesome. Obviously he is a great
guitarist but there's no meandering, fun-to-play-but-tedious-to-listen-to jams here. The solos
are concise and effective. | 4 | | Kyuss Welcome to Sky Valley
'Gardenia' - Definitely on the heavier side of the music on this list; and yeah, Kyuss write
some long songs (this one's like 6 or 7 minutes I think) but they don't overstay their welcome.
No bullshit, just a good song. | 5 | | Mark Lanegan Bubblegum
'Methamphetamine Blues' - This is nothing short of the most badass 3 minutes you'll lay your
ears on. Lanegan is a killer vocalist and this song storms in, kicks you square in the nuts, and
then storms right back out because not much else needs to be said about that. | 6 | | The National High Violet
'Bloodbuzz Ohio' - Big pounding drums. Weaving atmospheric guitars. Overly-understated
vocals. The National condensed into four minutes of bliss. | 7 | | Fair to Midland Arrows & Anchors
'Amarillo Sleeps on My Pillow' - This band proves that you can take big adventurous musical
ideas and still make good, no bullshit songs with them. I should mention that A) Darroh
Sudderth's vocals are insane, B) I cant stand shitty vocals so pls dont rec bands with shitty
vocalists | 8 | | The Replacements Tim
'Left of the Dial' or 'Bastards of Young' or 'I'll Buy' or 'Dose of Thunder' or... | 9 | | Faith No More Angel Dust
'Land of Sunshine' - Original, interesting, totally unique, smart; and anything but boring! | 10 | | Dire Straits Making Movies
'Romeo and Juliet' - A kick in the feels can be as hard-hitting as the aforementioned ball-kicking | 11 | | Bruce Springsteen Born to Run
'Thunder Road' - One of the all-time greats. Structurally simple; but emotionally, anything but. | 12 | | A Perfect Circle Mer De Noms
'The Hollow' - Obviously not in the same vein as Springsteen but this is a great, simple,
effective track. | 13 | | Band Album
