Rnd 8: Taco's Annihilation Recommendation Nation

Congrats to everybody who made it this far! We now move onto phase 2. From this point until the end, I am looking for full albums instead of songs. There will only be single eliminations now as well. I will try to be more strict with ratings from here on out. Note that not all rounds this time will have 2 genres to choose from. Sometimes there will only be 1. Please be aware that going through albums will take me longer than going through songs, so results will be a bit slower until we are closer to the end.

So i’ve only heard “Stand!,” but I did enjoy it so I was naturally pretty hyped delving into this. While unmistakingly funky, soulful, and groovy the album has a slight bleakness associated with it. Behind its dance and booty shaking jams, such as the opener and “Africa Talks to You,” there’s this melancholic undertone. The improvisational instrumentation gives the listener vibes of psychedelica and are a welcome foundation to most of the tracks. Album works far better as a whole than individual parts.

First things first, very happy with the variation on the record. There’s even a sitar focused instrumental jam in there (“Up on the Hill”). All the songs were fun, funky, and super catchy. Production quality was clean and professional, which i believed suited the style well. An accessible and easy listen that doesn’t sacrifice musical intrigue.

This one was a fun one. The songs switch up between sax chaos and catchy foot thumping melodies. The title track breaks the mold a bit however with a more build-up structure starting slower and picking up the pace gradually. The drums add a much needed “kick” to songs and sound stellar. The album felt like the embodiment of a confident walk down main street, this can especially be felt on “Pacemaker.”

5Charles Mingus
Blues & Roots

butcherboy

Fantastic playing from everyone involved. Jazz to make your hips swing and chill the fuck out. Album felt very controlled and accessible and was a blast to jam. The shouts and chants really really bring energy to some of the tracks. The blues undertones and bass playing by Mingus were fantastic. It may have been a bit safe to rec Mingus but screw it, I never heard him yet so it's fair game. The opener and closer were possibly my favs on here.

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: The Sting

UniqueUniverse

Probably a bit more ragtime than jazz but it had it’s jazzy moments and it worked out wonderfully. Despite being a soundtrack album it certainly felt complete as a whole, which I personally feel is rare. The different takes on the titular track “The Entertainer” was interesting to hear, and it works out cause it was my favorite track on the album anyway. The music felt confident and just has a really darn good feel-good vibe.

We Like It Here

Damn, that bass is thicker than any ass ive ever seen. The songs feel larger than life and its almost hard to believe it's a live album. Lots of different stuff going on here. Guitars and sax can feed off electronic melodies and trumpets wail in war victory-like intensity. A bright, groovin’ and diverse album that, despite falling into some minor jazz fusion cliches, manages to be a swell time.

Sunday at the Village Vanguard

pjorn

I was a big fan of “Undercurrent” so I already had a small taste of Bill’s style and was curious to hear this. Bill’s piano playing is as smooth as can be here and feels elegant. The bassist (Scott LaFaro) also does an excellent job. The album as a whole can be summed up as a tag team between Bill and Scott, each relinquishing their spotlight when it’s the other’s turn to showcase their skills. I’d say my main complaint, and it's not too big of one, is that I found the bass/cello a bit too prominent/loud. I'm actually kinda surprised about that statement myself.

9Miles Davis
In a Silent Way

Conmaniac

Another relatively safe rec but wonderful nonetheless. “In a Silent Way” is certainly graceful in sound and has a beautiful air about it. Davis is a big player in the game and I was able to see first hand on “Bitch’s Brew. ” This record is different though. Davis’ playing here is top notch of course but something about this felt more controlled, intimate, and smooth. Jazz keys, a personal weakness of mine, are used throughout the record to great effect.

Adagio For The Blue

L4titudes

Adagio is certainly not the jazz album you want when you’re trying to rock out, but it is the one you want when you desire melancholic ambient soundscapes with a lovely sax to accompany you on your journey. Pianos chime in to help accentuate some tracks as well and the album maintains a brooding atmosphere throughout. My only real complaint is the album gets a tad same-y by the end of it’s run but it’s almost not noticeable considering the dream like state it induces.

11Ryo Fukui
Scenery

50iL

A primarily piano focused jam with some tasty bouncing bass in there of course. Ryo’s piano playing feels like a dance of vivid color and imagination and comes off as nearly effortless, especially seen on “Early Summer.” His style is very evocative of many of the other jazzy-japs i've happened to stumble across. It’s that flowery and sunny atmosphere with a hint of childish wonder. Great great record.
