Recent DVD purchases

Since I only buy DVD in second-hand shops anymore I kind of buy a lot more. Cost me only 40$. Damn great cost-benefit ratio.

Let Them Talk

Swing Kids (1993) - 3 / 10 - Looking at it, there would be a few reasons to like this. A. It's about some "rebellious" teenagers in the nazi era. B. It has Robert Sean Leonard in it. C. It is in some way about music. Too bad none of it works. Well, Leonard really isn't bad, he really tries. And there are one or two other roles that work well. But it's cheesy as hell, has hardly any real storyline and even some of the good premises are destroyed by scenes that give you no other choice but to just shake your head.

Silence Yourself

The Final Cut (2004) - 4-5 / 10 - No, not the Pink Floyd short, but one of the many Robin Williams movies no one knows of anymore. And Robin Williams plus a pretty interesting premise is really all this has. Its script is messy, it explains nothing and it never even comes close to get to you emotionally. And yet a movie with Robin Williams in it just can't be THAT bad.

Enema of the State

Loser (2000) - 6-7 / 10 - One of the movies I loved back when I was a LOT younger. Still is quite nice though, mainly cause Jason Biggs works better in this than in most American Pie flicks.
7AC/DC
Back in Black

The Dark Knight (2008) - 7 / 10 - Not too much of a Batman fan, but most of the movies worked out quite well. After all the fuss over Heath Ledger's performance I probably expected a bit more from that side (he still is great), but Bale was better than I would have thought.
6Angels and Airwaves
Love

Spaceballs (1987) - 7 / 10 - One little step for Star Wars parodies, one big step for Rick Moranis, John Candy and Mel Brooks. Especially Moranis is superb in this. And it has its fair share of great gags. On the other hand no one should have to suffer through Bill Pullman in a lead role. I don't get how that guy got into some of the most successful movies of the 90s. He just sucks. And in addition to the great gags you also get those that one already saw coming before the film even started.
5Radiohead
Kid A

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - 7 / 10 - I watched it and constantly asked myself, if people really found it so damn brilliant besides its look. And the look is...damn. Not just great for 68, but even nowadays that precision and detail is just breathtaking in a way. But with all that longing for perfection, that pseudo-philosophical message and its focus on making it a journey through space and time rather than anything else, there's no room for story, dialogue or acting. I mean, the best "character" is the goddamn computer (at least he's got some humor). And as much as I understand the idea behind that incredibly slow pace, together with the classical pieces as a soundtrack it just seems to get nowhere at times. Plus, the ending is just, well.
By the way, kind of strange that this is too long and The Shining is considerably too short.

Disintegration

Fatal Attraction (1987) - 8 / 10 - Big plus: Michael Douglas. Slightly smaller plus: Glenn Close. They work great together, act in that stiff, yet not stale way that seems common for 80s movies. Like that. Also the pace is really perfect. And I mean perfect.
3R.E.M.
Monster

Shrek 2 (2004) - 8 / 10 - Well, what could I say, it's Shrek. And it's the best Shrek.
2NOFX
The War on Errorism

Frost/Nixon (2009) - 9 / 10 - Since I couldn't care less about these interviews, hell, didn't even know they existed before, I didn't expect too much. But Sheen and especially Langella are brilliant. I mean, Nixon comes off as pretty damn likeable in some way (though maybe just for me), which isn't the easiest thing to do. Plus I like that 70s look.
1Soap and Skin
Lovetune for Vacuum

Black Swan (2010) - 9 / 10 - I get why some people hated it. Its look at ballet is clichéd and it's a bit over the top for the longest. But Portman is pretty much perfect, Kunis is too (surprisingly) and it's actually pretty damn gloomy and dark, if one can relate to the whole "I need to be perfect" theme, which I sure as hell can.
