| Animated Movies Ranked
Yeah, a bit plagiarism (sorry, Torontonian), but I thought I just expand it a little and rank all computer animated movies I know. So there are quite a few missing, especially from the last years since I don't catch any movies anymore. | 38 | | Shrek The Third Dreamworks
This was really a disappointment, simply cause the first two are some of the most hilarious movies I've ever seen. But it's incredibly how flat and uninteresting this is. Really not worth mentioning actually and the point were Shrek went from damn great animation to an annoying, probably greed-tainted something. | 37 | | Bee Movie Dreamworks
Not that this is horrible, it was just so.....forgettable. I've seen it once on TV rather accidentally and I can't remember too much, despite the fact that it was pretty much a movie without any character, perfectly displayed by its uninteresting animation style (that seems to be everywhere nowadays, even in Pixar movies) | 36 | | Open Season Sony Animation
It's okay. I mean, all those rather random animal flicks (no matter if animated or not) are a bit boring on the whole. This had some good scenes, especially in the second half, but its animation style is too generic and it suffers from a lacklustre story and everything but interesting characters. | 35 | | Madagascar Dreamworks
See above. Was hilarious, when it came out, but nowadays it is a flat movie that is interrupted every now and then by some really great gags. It should be the other way round for it to be more than just pleasant. Though I'll always remember the Cast Away joke and the unbelievably cute creature that is Mort. | 34 | | The Incredibles Pixar
I know, I know. But it is The Incredibles. Yes, you're right, it is really one of the least imaginative animated movies with so many cliches in it that it almost hurts at times. Combined with about one hilarious character (Edna Mode, of course) throughout the movie and everyone else being uninteresting as hell this really suffers. Of course, Pixar wouldn't be Pixar if the animation wouldn't be great and the story line tight. That helps, but not enough for their standards. | 33 | | Toy Story 2 Pixar
I CAN'T STAND JESSIE & STINKY PETE. But then again, who can? It really is the quintessential continuation, trying to do what the first movie did, just better, a little bigger and therefore staying fresh. It doesn't accomplish that though. It is sweet, but too often annoying and while the old characters are still great this has nothing to offer the first one didn't have already. | 32 | | Horton Hears A Who! Blue Sky
Puh, let's see, if I still know what this is. Of course I do, but I admit, it's been quite a few years since I've seen that movie once. It was nice actually. A bit silly, but then again it's a Seuss adaptation, so what else would it be? You see that Blue Sky isn't the best studio, when it comes to animation, but the story is adapted well and even if it didn't really amaze me, I can't say too much against it. | 31 | | Ice Age Blue Sky
It was good, really good. At least back in the day when it came out. Now it obviously lacks any story or character development, but it has some of the most likeable characters in computer animated history and the somewhat unwieldy visuals set it apart from other CGI films in a good way. Bores a bit, but then again it's in the same league as Finding Nemo, when it comes to its audience. Scratch sucks by the way. | 30 | | Tinker Bell Disney
How embarrassing is it? I guess about 9.9 on the 10 scale, but I just watched it years ago on a lazy sunday morning and in fact this isn't bad. As one of the few original DisneyToon movies it is childish, girly, but be no means soulless. The story is pretty good, the animation is as well and despite being so innocent some 8 year olds may find it silly it manages to entertain on other levels. | 29 | | Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa Dreamworks
Better than the first. Mostly because the story doesn't end after 30 minutes and that the characters in it actually have some depth. Plus, a little trip to Africa is a quite nice idea and they really manage to balance between silly humor and somewhat "serious" moments. | 28 | | Finding Nemo Pixar
Never know what to say about it. It looks so perfect and about three jokes in the whole movie really work, but damn I hate that overtly moralistic approach about overprotective parents. Of course, not really looking at that years ago, I loved it back then. But I can hardly watch it anymore, mainly because of the colorless characters and the unbelievably simple story. | 27 | | A Christmas Carol Disney
Probably the best looking computer animated movie. It really has some brilliant visuals, but it lacks the soul of older adaptations. Everything looks beatiful and it is what one could maybe call an "experience" to watch this in 3D. But it is somewhat stale and doesn't get its message across. On the other hand, after decades of different Christmas Carols from everywhere it doesn't really need to anymore. The look makes up for that. | 26 | | Rango Paramount
The very last movie I ever watched in cinema. And I wasn't exactly blown away by it. But then again, I'm not familiar with the Western genre and therefore it probably isn't exactly made for me. But it looks great, has a weird sense of humor like pretty much every Johnny Depp movie and although it is overtly action-focused there are some pretty hilarious scenes thanks to the great main character. It could have been better, that is out of question, but then again it is everything but a disappointment. | 25 | | Shark Tale Dreamworks
Underrated. Yes, this is actually good. Not nearly up to par with the best animated work, but actually more entertaining than Finding Nemo. It continues the endless pop references that Shrek once started and maybe its pretty violent mobster theme isn't exactly child appropriate, but since I'm not 5 anymore I can live with that. The voice acting is great, its gags aren't the worst out there and it has a really good pace. | 24 | | Surf's Up Sony Animation
Overlooked. At least I guess it is, cause no one ever mentions this, when in fact this is a damn entertaining thing. Haven't seen it forever, but I still remember the story pretty well. Well, not too much to say, maybe it's enough to give penguins a surf board and I'm satisfied. | 23 | | Simpsons: The Movie Fox Animation
That's cheating, I know, but there are so many CGI scenes in this, I'd say it still qualifies somehow. Saw that with my siblings and damn was it hilarious. Really pretty much perfect from beginning to end. Now I have it on DVD and I can only watch with commentary, because it just bores me to watch the Simpsons for over an hour. I mean, I would probably be bored by the usual 25 minutes nowadays, but this really is too much. Don't know, why I ranked it so high, but I won't change it anymore. Think more of it around Toy Story 2 or something. | 22 | | The Polar Express Warner Bros.
Probably seen that a dozen times, at least once every year around Christmas. That innocent style and story are of course cringe-worthy, but it's a Christmas movie. You can't expect anything else from it and Tom Hanks really nails this. He's perfect throughout the whole thing. Then again he isn't in every scene (would have been better, if he were) | 21 | | Despicable Me Universal
Minions + weird old scientist + cutest little girls ever = damn great movie. Needless to say the whole super villian gags work really good (THAT SQUID LAUNCHER!!!). Gru is annoying and it's pretty much a collage of other movies' ideas, but they know damn well how to hide that fact. All in all, Universal could do a bit more in that area, just not five sequels to this (that is bound to suck eventually). | 20 | | Happy Feet Warner Bros.
Awwwwww, isn't it cute. Maybe a little too cute, but it is literally impossible to make a movie about a dancing penguin and let it look "cool", even in the Arctic. In short, looks great, sounds great for most of the time - probably its biggest virtue - and on the whole it's just a finished story without any major flaws, maybe not many real highlights either. | 19 | | Ratatouille Pixar
I never completely got it. Maybe cause Pixar humans almost always look crappy - to be fair, so do everyone else's too -, maybe I'm not too much of a cooking fan. But it would be unjustified to say it isn't damn well made. Still in the period when Pixar was infallible, this is just another piece in the puzzle of their classic period, which is brilliant both visually and story-wise. | 18 | | Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit Aardman Productions
Watched it with my brother in a nearly empty cinema hall and it just was so hilarious. Any Aardman movie is simply cause of the way this stop-motion thing looks. You see all those characters and you only have a grin on your face because of them, no matter what they say or do. That part isn't even bad, it just doesn't seem that important. Still, what's out there that could be cooler than a were-rabbit? | 17 | | Over the Hedge Dreamworks
Ok, this might be influenced by its great german version. At least I think it's great. But even if I ignore that it is one hell of a funny movie. A generic animal flick in the good way (compare Open Season...). It doesn't make sense of course, what the hell could lead to a turtle, a skunk and some possum ending up together? Don't know, don't care. It leads to a strange mash-up of pretty different, somewhat clich?d, but really entertaining characters. | 16 | | Robots Blue Sky
The big thing about animation in general and CGI in particular is that it can create an entire world and do whatever it wants within this world. At best it is something that is either something hidden from us in our normal lifes or complete imagination. This is the latter and it succeeds on almost every base. Maybe it is too cheesy, but it plays damn well with the mechanical characters (pun intended) and it makes them look really great too. Also, a James Brown finale is a good finale. | 15 | | Dinosaur Disney
No one ever mentions this. Why, isn't there anyone that thinks this is great? It's different and it gets lost a bit throughout the story, but it looks amazing, it isn't too melodramatic and it has dinosaurs, goddammit. What else do you need? | 14 | | Ice Age: The Meltdown Blue Sky
Don't know why this is here... Oh, yeah, I really like it, that's why! Maybe it is a bit too high, but without a doubt it is an improvement over the first one. Because it has some emotion and just as Madagascar 2 it manages to establish characters rather than just throwing them in. Also the strange romance works quite well and the stupid jokes they somewhat recycled from the first movie just work way better. Plus, epic mammoth arrival. | 13 | | A Bug's Life Pixar
So much for creating a world that is hidden from us. That is in fact its biggest asset, the whole idea of making a movie one centimetre over the ground. Besides that it is a bit formulaic and cheesy, but it gets the benefit of me knowing it since I was 4. Furthermore those circus freaks are really damn good, even if Heimlich is actually way better in the german version (Slim rocks in both though). | 12 | | Shrek Dreamworks
Ah, the reason why Dreamworks' performance is still not really inferior to Pixar's. It isn't that movie in particular, but the whole idea of making a movie that is in its entirety essentially a huge mass of pop scene jokes and fairy tale puns. As lame as that sounds in written form, Shrek is, well, it's just Shrek. Don't know what more to say. | 11 | | Monsters, Inc. Pixar
You gotta love those monsters. There's probably nothing any designer for an animation movie likes more than creating such weird things and it really shows. They are all either cute and cuddly or hilariously strange. The only thing that's annoying is that they had to bring in a 4 year old, but who cares. She isn't able to destroy the monster party. | 10 | | Flushed Away Aardman Productions
Underrated. Again. Aardman just rules and this is damn great. Singing snails, french frogs, that is in fact perfect. Everthing else isn't exactly that but actually I can't think of any time where this is close to being bad. It is just so entertaining throughout. Tops Ratatouille when it comes to rat stories. | 9 | | Up Pixar
This has it flaws. And I'm not saying it to criticize it, but because that is really a shame. The first fifteen minutes are the most touching thing I've seen in a computer animated movie and maybe even in animated movies in general. They are really perfect without any doubt. But the more characters you get, the more momentum it loses. Especially that damn bird is useless. Still, the visuals together with an unbelievably likeable grumpy, old guy are enough to make almost anything here worthwhile. Never liked the end though, grumpy, old man doesn't qualify as Last Action Hero and even less as happy grandfather. | 8 | | Toy Story Pixar
This is were it all began. That alone isn't enough to make it a good movie, but we all know it is. The biggest question is probably: Woody or Buzz? I'm definitely on Woody's side. Anyways, it really cover every necessary base for a brilliant movie, being funny, emotional, silly, with some action thrown in. And Pixar definitely made the best out of the whole toy idea, giving every one of them some hilarious line. | 7 | | Shrek 2 Dreamworks
So, why is this better than the first? a) Antonio Banderas plays Puss in Boots, a character that single-handedly lifts the movie to the next level, b) the Fairy Godmother is perfect in every way possible, c) Shrek is more than just the grumpy idiot he was in the first movie, d) the finale with the Godmother singing is just tres magnifique | 6 | | Antz Dreamworks
A Woody Allen movie where he plays an ant is pretty much determined to be a winner. The edged animation style is perfect, the melancholic main character is too and the somewhat darker atmosphere is pretty unique for a CGI movie. Also the idea of an ant movie that is mainly about the question of belonging and individuality is in one word brilliant. No better setting for this, maybe apart from a lemming colony. | 5 | | Cars Pixar
SO many people don't like it. But I think it's perfect. Really everything Pixar has done right in other movies comes together here. You have a unique world that has some hilarious features, you have a perfect pace that strikes the balance between fast racing scenes and the more relaxed setting of the town, and - that might be great only for non-Americans - that freedom of the road, Route 66 theme is really good in my eyes. Not to mention that it is the one Pixar movie besides Up with a message that isn't just there for kids. Maybe you'll disagree, but I think it is about going slow, thinking more about what you actually do everyday and finally thinking about what the hell you really want. Might sound pedestrian, but lets face it, we are living at a frantic pace, being available at pretty much every time, many of us with the longing to be online all the time and those questions appear to be pretty relevant. At least I know that it somehow speaks to me on that level and there aren't too many movies accomplishing that. | 4 | | Toy Story 3 Pixar
This is just brilliant. One has to hope they don't consider to make a fourth installment, because after this it could only be a failure. While Toy Story was already a great movie it lacked a bit of depth and TS 3 has exactly that. Lots-O is without a doubt my favorite animated villain character-wise. There's just a good story behind that guy and the whole setting is just so great with all those abandoned toys. It is really just a success. | 3 | | Chicken Run Aardman Productions
This still tops it though. I already mentioned the hilarious look of Aardman movies and this is no exception, it rather enhances it even more. The "villain" alone is enough to prove that. But the whole movie is on the same level of ridiculousness and not in a bad way. Knitting hens, Air Force roosters, the fear of ending up as a chicken pie and a ton of not so brilliant escape plans. It works, everything. | 2 | |

10.29.14 | Sorry for stealing the idea, Torontonian.
Interesting thing with the cover art.
Seems like Aardman is the best animation studio, but then again I cheated to even include them.
And since I don't think anyone will read all the descriptions, I'll just point out: THAT SQUID LAUNCHER!!! | Clumseee
10.29.14 | This list. Erg.

10.30.14 | And I agree 10 is underrated, I thought it was pretty funny | Flugmorph
10.30.14 | watching computer animated movies is getting old for me really quickly. studio ghibli and other anime studios have my attention now.
yeah i know they work with computers too. | KrazyKris
10.30.14 | Agreed, Ghibli tops everything from the US or UK. Actually Princess Mononoke is probably my favourite movie of all time, Miyazaki is just a genius. But as almost everyone here I just followed the whole Pixar & Dreamworks stuff through my childhood and some of it still is damn awesome. | Flugmorph
10.30.14 | did u watch nausicaa?
| guitarded_chuck
10.30.14 | wall e #1 | KrazyKris
10.30.14 | Yeah, of the 4 I know (Spirited Away, Mononoke, Castle In The Sky & Nausicaa) I think it is the "worst". Still a great movie, but it isn't animated as well, the futuristic touch isn't exactly my cup of tea and sometimes it feels like there's missing a bit of substance. But really not bad, like an 8/10 probably. | Jackass
11.01.14 | Ratatouille | wtferrothorn
11.06.14 | How To Train Your Dragon? | KrazyKris
11.06.14 | Never seen it | wtferrothorn
11.06.14 | Oh, sorry. The original and the sequel are my fave animated movies. | Nud
11.06.14 | Beavis and Butthead: Do America | oisincoleman64
11.07.14 | Started off as a good list but went downhill at 25. Will agree that Shrek 2 is waaaaaaay better than 1 | PayneTiger777
11.07.14 | Fantastic Mr. Fox | Alkemest
11.07.14 | No anime?
I don't watch a whole lot of anime or western animated movies anymore, but if there's anime included I'd include:
Ghost in the Shell
Perfect Blue
Akira
There's lots of 'better' ones by big name animators, but I haven't seen them (insert 'what do you mean you've never seen Princess Monokaakldfjiojaeio' here).
Toy Story 2 should be number 2 on your list btw imo | Supercoolguy64
11.07.14 | damn, forgot half of these movies were a thing.
reminds me of when i was a kid, mang | KrazyKris
11.07.14 | I only listed computer animated stuff, therefore no anime. Already up there, Mononoke is probably my favorite movie.
And no, by no means should a movie with Jessie in it be #2 | Supercoolguy64
11.07.14 | holy shit, i completely forgot about Robots.
wooooooaaaaahh blast to the past, man | KrazyKris
11.07.14 | Was great back then, wasn't it? | Supercoolguy64
