Fave 1990 Albums

here are some music
10A Tribe Called Quest
People's Instinctive Travels & The Paths of Rhythm

The tribes first outing shows off their charisma in spades, but a few tracks just come and go with out making a good impression. There are a few songs where the flow feels elementary, but like the MC at #1, they approach their bars with a levity that’ll often put a smile on your face. Hard not to grin like a dope listening to ‘I Left My Wallet in El Segundo’.

I Left My Wallet In El Segundo, Push It Along, Can I Kick It?

9Cocteau Twins
Heaven or Las Vegas

“Garlic fondue” !!!

Cherry Coloured Funk, Fotzepolitic, Wolf In The Breast, Heaven or Las Vegas

4
8Depeche Mode
Violator

Its two gigantic singles are an apt summation of the album - Violator is front to back a brooding synthpop affair that borders on downright cinematic. Listen to the intro of Waiting for the Night, or the entirety of Mephisto and tell me otherwise. It loves what it does, and it does it so well.

Sweetest Perfection, Personal Jesus, Enjoy The Silence

7Nitzer Ebb
Showtime

Brooding, aggressive, industrial. The vocalists talk shouting delivery is fun. Feels like boxing for your life in a future-dystopian alleyway.

Lightning Man, Fun To Be Had, Getting Closer

6Angelo Badalamenti
Twin Peaks

Between the most forlorn singing you’ve ever heard from one Miss Julee Cruise (Rest in Peace), haunting synthwork, timeless motifs, and some on-the-nose finger snapping film-noir jazzy-lounge, Angelo Badalamenti (also Rest in Peace) really made one of the most timeless TV scores to grace the planet. Hard to pick favorites, but if I had to show someone three:

Audrey’s Theme, Freshly Squeezed, Falling

5Paris
The Devil Made Me Do It

Paris is a solo stunner. He carries this entire record effortlessly - deserved braggadocio and righteous political bars will have you raising your fist. And this is a debut!

Ebony, Mellow Madness, Scarface, The Devil Made Me Do It

4Ride
Nowhere

An S-tier shoegaze album, Nowhere feels like riding the perfect high, from the exuberant energies in tracks like Seagull and Here and Now, to the slight ethereal melancholy of Vapour Trail and Dreams Burn Down.

Here and Now, Nowhere, Vapour Trail, Seagull

3Naked City
Naked City

Naked City - S/T

This is just what it be like sometimes. Love the smashing of genres together here.

I think of this one as One Big Track... but Demon Sanctuary funny af as fuck

2They Might Be Giants
Flood

Far and away the bands best early work. Loaded with its quirky little hooks, shades of normal is just a setting on a washing machine, but a healthy amount. All killer no filler.

Birdhouse In Your Soul, We Want A Rock, Istanbul, Particle Man

1Monie Love
Down to Earth

This is probably peak ‘De La Soul’ type backpack rap for me. Yes, the lyrics tend to the lightweight side - she’s probably the most affable MC ever put to tape short of Will Smith, with verses about high school love, how her family supported her career, and how a lack of self-reflection will lead to an unhappy life. And YET i just can’t get enough of it - it’s an hour of raps that tend toward goofy from someone with a great sense of flow over some really solid production.

What I’m Supposed 2 B, Down To Earth, I Can Do This (Uptown Mix), It’s A Shame
